What many people don’t know is that Sigma Delta Tau is traditionally a Jewish sorority, having been founded by seven Jewish women. But don’t worry, there are no religious requirements for membership, so any interested ladies can start bidding care free.

Unlike the common stigma of college Greek Life, Sigma Delta Tau actually has a pretty sterling reputation nationwide as a smaller but more close-knit sorority. Their vision statement is “to prepare and empower women to change and make an impact on the world,” which sounds like empty goodwill words until you realize what kind of philanthropy SDT does. In 1982, Sigma Delta Tau adopted Prevent Child Abuse America as their national cause. All told, chapters across the country raise more than $300,000 every year for the Prevent Child Abuse America fund.

At the end of the day, any sorority that boasts the legendary Joan Rivers as an alumni is good in our book.

I’ve spent my entire life in the northeast. My father is from Queens, I was born in Manhattan, and I was raised in New Jersey. My father grew up playing stick ball and I was raised on a soccer field and a basketball court. Point being, motorsports were never in the picture. And at the age of 24, I never thought they would enter it. I guess I always just assumed that the ship had sailed.

I’ve never been so glad to be dead wrong in my life. After this weekend at Daytona, I am now officially a NASCAR fan.

As for the Daytona 500 itself, the entire thing is like a carnival. The only way to describe Daytona to someone who’s never been there is to say it’s like taking your favorite sport and building an entire city around it. Whereas baseball is associated with Cooperstown and football with Canton, NASCAR and Daytona take that idea and crank it up to 1000. Ready? Close your eyes, picture your favorite thing in the world, build an entire fantasy city based on it, throw in some cold beer, delicious food, and gorgeous weather, and that’s the Daytona 500.

The atmosphere is unforgettable, the crowd is breathtaking, and the fans are passionate. The only thing more perfect than the temperature of the weather is the temperature of the beer. Essentially, the Daytona 500 is everything any guy could ever want and then some.

Now, let’s talk about the sport of NASCAR as a whole.

Going into the weekend, I was the furthest thing from being a NASCAR fan. I didn’t know how the season worked or who any of the drivers were, besides the five or six you always see in the highlights. Hell, I thought Jeff Gordon was still top dog. To be honest, I never really saw the point of watching 40 guys drive around in circles for half the day. Just as Americans don’t understand Europeans’ obsession with soccer, I never understood the craze over NASCAR.

More than any other sport we have, these guys are putting their lives on the line every single second they compete. You think a two-minute drive without timeouts is intense? Imagine the final couple laps at Daytona, where one false move could cost you your life. Now that’s intense. That’s competition. Once you realize that the stakes of any given NASCAR race are more tangible and consequential than that of any other sport, you find a whole new appreciation and respect for the both the drivers and the sport as a whole.

But after my weekend in Daytona, not only do I understand why people are so passionate about NASCAR, but I came away from the weekend realizing I had just witnessed one of the greatest events in American sports. Before this weekend, I’d watched maybe one hour of NASCAR in my 24-year existence. But after this weekend, you can bet your ass I’ll be tuning in for next weekend’s race.

And that’s probably what excites me most: that I have a brand new sport to get jacked up about every week. At the end of the day, all we need is something to look forward to and all I’m looking forward to right now is next Sunday when I can kick back, relax, crack open a beer, and continue my new-found life as a NASCAR fan.

Lent is almost here, so all you good Christians better get ready.

For those of you that don’t know, Lent is a season of forty days (not counting Sundays) which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The forty days are meant to represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, resisting Satan’s temptation and preparing himself for his spiritual ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for Easter. Those that follow the practice are expected to use the time for self-examination and reflection. Today, it is common for people to give something up such as meat or sweets during the Lent period.

When Does Lent Start and End?

Lent will begin on Wednesday, March 1 and it will end on Thursday, April 13.

When Liam Neeson’s first Taken film hit theaters, no one quite expected it to blow up (both figuratively and literally) as big as it did. The movie became an under-the-radar hit with solid reviews and a surprisingly impressive $226 million at the worldwide box office. The unexpected success led to two more films in the franchise and now the premise is being adapted for the small screen.

Bad news: Neeson will not be appearing in the Taken TV show.
Good news: we expect just as many dead terrorists/human traffickers/insert any type of bad guy here.

The TV show will serve as a prequel to the film franchise with star Clive Standen playing a younger version of Neeson’s Bryan Mills. One thing that bodes well for the Taken TV show is that it comes from the mind of creator Luc Besson. The visionary directory has been a bit hit or miss in his career, but we’re choosing to trust the guy who made Leon: The Professional and Lucy.

Gary Alan Coe, the viral sensation who stole the show at the Oscars, reportedly served a 20-year prison sentence and was released from jail just three days before his 15 minutes of fame.

‘Gary from Chicago’ and his fiancee Vickie Vines were the highlight of the Oscars as part of the group of tourists Jimmy Kimmel brought to Dolby Theater during Sunday night’s show.

In a night overshadowed by the Best Picture screw up, Gary and Vicki were easily the best part of this year’s Academy Awards, even getting fake married by Denzel Washington. However, just when you thought the story of Gary from Chicago couldn’t get any more bizarre, it does. As it turns out, Gary was released from serving a twenty-year jail sentence just three days before the Academy Awards. Gary, a South Shore, Chicago native, was released from a California prison after serving two decades for several felonies, ABC7 reported.

Via ABC:

Three days before the Oscars, Gary said he was released from a California prison after serving 20 years for multiple felonies. While paying his debt to society, he said he found Vickie Vines, his fiancee, and religion.

However, Gary, who met his fiancee Vickie while behind bars, did not reveal what felonies he was in jail for.

“Change is possible. It’s a sad day to be in prison for 20 years and not be able to be a dad, granddad to your children,” Gary told ABC.

“You know what my son told me today, man, and I almost come to tears. He said he’s proud of me. So to hear your children say that they’re proud of me means the world to me.”

Gary and Vicki will be officially getting married in California this summer.

Only two months into 2017 and it is already shaping up to be a pretty incredible year for gaming. With Horizon Zero Dawn and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard getting the year started off right, we begin to look ahead at what next month has in store. March is going to be jam-packed packed with releases, including the release of Nintendo’s newest console. Without further ado, here is our list of the most anticipated titles of March 2017.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

You knew this one was coming. Possibly the most anticipated game of the entire year and a launch title for the Nintendo Switch, Breath of the Wild hopes to reinvent the Zelda franchise. On top of that, Link has a ton of new abilities at his disposal such as climbing, gliding, and the ability to cook and eat food to restore health. If Nintendo can achieve the same level of fun and directed story as previous installments as well as giving players all the freedom they have been promising since revealing the game, Breath of the Wild may be one of the greatest Zelda games to date.

NieR: Automata

NieR: Automata is an indirect sequel to two other titles in the NieR franchise and is a spin-off of the Drakengard series. In this installment, players will be fighting in a war between alien machines and the last remnants of humanity. Set a thousand years after the original NieR, you play as a warrior android who hopes to tip the scale in this war for a post-apocalyptic Earth. What we have seen so far promises some serious action in the vein of God of War. The setting is cool, the story looks great; we’ll just see if Automata delivers when it’s released next month.

The long awaited continuation of everyone’s favorite sci-fi RPG is almost here and Bioware looks as though they have pulled out all the stops for the newest iteration of their beloved franchise. Mass Effect Andromeda will take players to the Andromeda system where they will experience high adventure in a brand new galaxy. Expect to be traveling from planet to planet exploring and uncovering the mysteries of this new corner of the universe. The newest gameplay trailer reveals many of the upgrades and changes they have made to the combat mechanics as well as giving a deeper look at the changes they have made to the skill system. If Andromeda is even just on-par with the rest of the series, we can expect a truly memorable sci-fi romp across the galaxy.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Ghost Recon: Wildlands seems to be stealing a lot of ideas from GTA V online and that is just fantastic. Built from the ground up as a multiplayer experience, Wildlands tosses players into a drug cartel-controlled part of Bolivia and tasks them with taking down one of the most dangerous men in the world. Players will be able to plan and execute missions in whatever way they see fit and they can do it all online with friends. In this completely open-world experience players will have tons to do and see with plenty of side missions to take on when not following the main story. Wildlands is the second reboot for the aging series, but it looks like this one could reshape the franchise as we know it.

Ok. This one flew under my radar for far too long, but now that I know about it, Lego Worlds has become one of my most highly anticipated titles for the year. Lego Worlds is a sandbox adventure where players can build anything they want in a 3D, procedurally generated world. Count… me… in. Players can construct buildings and vehicles and even ride around on all manner of Lego animals. It’s been on Steam early access for a while, but Lego Worlds drops officially this March. With the resounding success of Minecraft and the brand noteriety of Lego, it’s not hard to see why this game exists. Now the real question is how could it lose?

Ever since Donald Trump won the election, The Late Show has finally found its groove. In fact, the week after the inauguration, The Late Show beat out The Tonight Show in ratings for the first time since Stephen Colbert’s first week as host.

Part of that hot streak has been the somewhat monthly appearances made by former The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, who is always a welcome addition to the late night circus.

Using a tunnel under the Ed Sullivan Theater, Stewart made his way back behind Stephen Colbert’s desk. Stewart reveals that whenever Trump says, “believe me,” to the audience or on television, he’s actually just spreading “bullsh*t.” This clip is CLASSIC Stewart and definitely worth the watch. The dude needs to go back to Comedy Central and boot Trevor Noah the f*ck out of his chair.

I write for this website, which means I want you clicking on as many of my articles as possible to help make me look good. But honestly, if you’re sitting in front of your computer screen right now instead of celebrating Mardi Gras aka Fat Tuesday aka the best holiday in America, then I’m severely disappointed in you. For shame.

Having said that, I do know that Ash Wednesday and Lent are coming up and having known literally nothing about either holiday outside of unfairly ridiculing my buddies for giving up meat forty days a year, I can totally understand wanting to learn a little bit more about this occasion. So, in case you were curious, here’s the full 411 on Ash Wednesday and Lent.

What Is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and its official name is “Day of Ashes” (which sounds way more badass). The reason for this is because followers rub ash on their foreheads in the shape of a cross on this day. Why do they do this? Ash Wednesday is meant to commence the season of Lent with spiritual discipline and the cross represents a person’s connection with Jesus Christ and their intention to repent for their sins.

Interestingly enough, Ash Wednesday is not mentioned in the bible. However, there are accounts in the Old Testament of followers using dust and ashes as a symbol of repentance and/or mourning.

Ash Wednesday was accepted into the beliefs of the Catholic church at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D.

What Is Lent?

Lent is a forty-day season (not counting Sundays) which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. This year, it will begin on March 1 and end on April 15.

Lent lasts for forty days because that is how long Jesus spent in the wilderness as he fought off the temptations of Satan and prepared to spread the good word around town about his old man. These days, Lent is meant as a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for Easter. Followers use this time to strengthen their relationship with god while voluntarily giving something up such as sweets or even something more significant.

Lent become more widespread and commonly accepted as a religious practice when Christianity was legalized in 313 A.D.

Dove Cameron is a 21-year-old Disney star who has appeared on shows like Liv & Maddie and movies such as Cloud 9 and Descendants since she started making a name for herself in 2013. She also appeared in the 2016 telecast of Hairspray Live!, so she’s got some solid credits to her name as a young up-and-comer. But, if that weren’t enough, Cameron is also an accomplished singer. She’s a double threat!

The Seattle, Washington native began performing at the ripe old age of eight years old. Born Chloe Celeste Hosterman, Cameron picked up the nickname Dove from her father when she was a toddler and it just kind of stuck.

The odds of Donald Trump being impeached have dropped and it isn’t looking good for ole’ Donnie Walnuts. And before all of you jump down our throats, mind you that these are legit gambling odds from a betting house.

According to United Kingdom-based betting house Ladbrokes, the current odds of Donald Trump being impeached or resigning before the end of his first term are at 10/11.

The impeachment odds are just one of many “Donald Trump Specials” betting lines being hosted by Ladbrokes, a United Kingdom betting house. Unfortunately, Las Vegas only allows for betting odds on sports.

Trump Bets

The other odds being offered by Ladbrokes include bets that Trump won’t be re-elected in 2020 and that he’ll visit Russia by the end of 2017. Interestingly enough, Jessica Bridge, a spokesperson for Ladbrokes, claims they have gotten serious action on Trump’s odds. Bridge said:

“The money is showing no signs of slowing down and we’ve been forced to cut Trump’s impeachment odds accordingly. We’ve taken five times the amount of bets on him failing to see out his full term than on him doing so.”

Additionally, gamblers also take odds on which year Trump will leave office, with options including 2021 (the end of his first term) or 2025 or later (which suggests that he’s serving a horrifying third term).

A Brooklyn high school has been evacuated due to a bomb threat, police say. Bomb threats have been on the rise lately, with 22 being called in against Jewish Community Centers across the country on Monday. However, this incident is not known to be connected to the recent string of bomb threats.

Thousands of students and faculty are currently gathered on the tennis courts outside of the school as authorities investigate.

What Happened

Midwood High School on Bedford Avenue near Glenwood Road was evacuated following a bomb threat at around 11:15 A.M. EST this Tuesday. A bomb squad has been sent to school premises, according to police. As of now, no explosives have been found by the NYPD Bomb Squad, officials say.

No injuries have been reported and the evacuation was ordered to err on the side of caution.

A car in Gulf Shores, Alabama ran into high school band members preparing to march in an upcoming Mardi Gras parade on Tuesday, injuring at least eleven students from Gulf Shores High School. A city spokesperson says there were eleven band members injured in the crash, three of whom are in critical condition.

The vehicle involved in the crash, which was driven by an elderly man, was a part of the Gulf Shores Parade and was behind the band in the parade route. While it is unknown at this time whether the crash was an accident or had criminal intent, given the man’s old age, the most likely answer is that it was merely a horrific accident. Gulf Shores official press conference at 11:45 A.M. CST.

“A teenage band has just started to march down the parade route when they were struck from behind. The vehicle was a part of the parade,” says Grant Brown, a spokesperson for the city of Gulf Shores.

According to the city’s Facebook page, portions of Highway 59 and surrounding roads are closed at this time. The Gulf Shores Parade was officially canceled and the parade route was closed.

The Minnesota Vikings announced that they will not exercise the 2017 option on Adrian Peterson. He will become a free agent.

Peterson was owed a $6 million roster bonus on March 11 and had an $18 million cap hit for the 2017 season.

“Adrian is an important part of the Minnesota Vikings organization,” Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman said in a statement. “We will continue to have conversations with his representatives and leave our future options open while determining what is best for both parties moving forward.”

As for where Adrian is going to end up, he’s already hinting at where he could land. Aside from the Giants, other potential playing spots for the future Hall Of Famer include the Raiders, the Colts, the Texans, and the Buccaneers.

Peterson played in three games for Minnesota last season after sustaining a season-ending knee injury against the Indianapolis Colts. Peterson produced a career-low 72 yards on 37 carries, a 1.9 yard-per-carry average. Due to injuries and an NFL suspension, Peterson has only played in 20 games in the last three seasons. His last successful season was in 2015 during which he rushed for 1,485 yards.

Massachusettes State Police confirm that a small plane crashed into a building in Methuen, Massachusetts. The crash happened on Riverview Boulevard, which is across the Merrimack River from the Lawrence Municipal Airport, on Tuesday.

There is no word of any injuries or deaths at this time. The Methuen Fire Department says there was only a pilot on board the single-engine aircraft at the time of the crash.

No other details, including the pilot’s condition, were immediately available.

According to the Boston Globe, the Federal Aviation Administration said the private plane was a Sonex aircraft making its final approach for a landing on Runway 14 at Lawrence Municipal Airport. the aircraft was approximately one mile out from the airport.

The crash is being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
