The fastest my body has ever gone is about 90, maybe 95 miles an hour. I’ve always owned a Jeep, which as you may or may not know, isn’t necessarily built for speed.

The one time I tried to get to 100m MPH was my senior year of high school, when responsibilities were at an all-time low and stupidity was at an all-time high.

We were on our way to Seaside Heights for Memorial Day for a weekend full of bad decisions. Ripping across the Seaside Heights bridge, listening to 6 Foot 7 Foot by Lil Wayne, my buddies thought it would be a good idea to tempt me into pushing my ol’ Jeep Liberty into the 100’s.

Naturally, I caved quite quickly.

75. Okay — I’ve been here.

80. Still in my wheelhouse. I’ve done 80 on the parkway 1000 times.

85. Okayyyy now. Getting a little wild.

Once we hit the 90’s, the steering wheel of the Jeep started to vibrate, so I taped out without ever reaching 100 MPH.

Well, folks, today was the first day in my life I’ve gone over 100 MPH, which is about half of what they do during The Great American Race. The conclusion I came to? NASCAR drivers are absolutely out of their minds.

First off, I lucked out by having what seemed to be the coolest pace driver at the track. In fact, my dude was going so hard in the paint his higher ups told him to slow it down.

All the while as I was gripping onto the seat for dear life, I was desperately trying to wrap my brain around the idea that the NASCAR drivers are not only going TWICE as fast, but doing so surrounded by dozens of other cars going at 200 MPH.

Frankly, it’s insane. They’re insane. But insane in the best way possible. To sum it up simply: NASCAR drivers have bigger cajones than basically every other athlete.

Qualifying for the first two spots in the Daytona will begin Sunday afternoon at the Daytona International Speedway (*cracks beer in celebration). The top two qualifying times on Sunday will be awarded the top two sports at the start of the Daytona 500. The majority of the remainder of the field will be determined by Thursday’s Can-Am Duel races. The actual race will take place on Sunday, February 26.

Joey Logano was the 2015 Daytona 500 champion and he put up the fastest time in practice on Saturday.

“In all honesty, I’ve never been that fast in qualifying here in Daytona in my whole career,” Logano said to the Associated Press. “I feel like I’ve never had a shot at it, but now I feel like I’m closer than ever. I feel like I’m kind of in new territory, plus I think some of these other guys sandbag a lot, so tomorrow will be the telltale sign.”

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This entry into Zelda lore was originally set to be released on the Wii U, but will now serve as the Nintendo Switch’s flagship game. The massive and ambitious open world endeavor is said to be the biggest and most expansive Zelda game of all-time.

Breath of the Wild will feature loot drops, crafting, cooking, and other immersive new features. Get excited.

1-2-Switch

• Price: $39.99
• Release Date: March 3, 2017

Similar to Wii Sports on the Wii and Nintendoland on the Wii U, the Switch will come complete with its own set of minigames. The 1-2-Switch won’t accompany any of the launch editions so it will have to be purchased separately. However, it won’t be as expensive as typical Switch games.

We’re impressed with the variety of selection to choose from including a cowboy-themed duel game, fencing, spell-casting, guitar playing, dancing, and a ton of other really cool minigames. It’s hard to be bored with a handful of different options at your disposal.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

• Price: $49.99
• Release Date: April 28, 2017

You can make a strong case for Mario Kart as the greatest video game of all time (cut to 90s kids nodding their heads in agreement). That’s why we’re excited for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The Wii Us Mario Kart 8 was already one of the best racing titles in recent memory and this version promises to be even better.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will feature new characters and courses to choose from, the return of Battle Mode and some really cool multi-player options. There’s also a couple new items and the ability to hold two items at once instead of just one. Yeah, we know repurchasing is a pain, but this might be the rare instance where it’s actually worth it.

Arms

• Price: $49.99
• Release Date: Spring 2017

Arms will serve as the first all new Nintendo IP for the Switch and boasts an admittedly odd but an intriguing mix of game styles. Imagine a first-person shooter mixed with a boxing game and you’ve got Arms. Extendable arms fire long distance to knock opponents out. Sure, we’re in.

Arms will feature punching, blocking, grabbing, dodging, and a couple super moves. We have no idea how deep the game goes, but it looks like a fun old fashioned sock ’em, rock ’em game and that’s enough for us.

Splatoon 2

• Price: $59.99
• Release Date: Summer 2017

Not many expected Splatoon to become quite the hit that it did for the Wii U, but we’re happy that it did. Nintendo may be defined by the Marios and Zeldas of the world, but it’s nice to know they’re still capable of creating a great new original character.

The online multiplayer shooter has an enjoyably goofy character design and an intentionally colorful setting thanks to Splatoon‘s twist on the typical shooter game. Rather than bullets, users fire ink at one another which causes damage and provides team upgrades like better speed. Whoever has the most ink wins. Simple but effective.

Those of you who’ve never been to a NASCAR race have no idea what the scene at the track is like. It’s extremely busy with all sorts of sponsors and events popped up everywhere. There are constant interviews and activities sprinkled around the track, and there’s even a good chance you’ll see one of the drivers before they start the race.

But it’s definitely a rare event that you get to actually meet the drivers–let alone shake their hand, talk to them, and grab a picture. That’s where M&M’s comes in. Since racing legend Kyle Busch is a driver sponsored by M&Ms, the candy company thought it’d be a fun idea to surprise a couple of racing fans by having him come in for an unexpected photo opportunity.

Check out what happened in the video below. Obviously you shouldn’t got to races expecting Kyle Busch to jump out and greet you, but these kinds of things are a perfect example of the fun stuff that happens at NASCAR races.

Bill Paxton, an impressive character actor who appeared in notable hits such as Twister, Titanic, Apollo 13, and Aliens, has died at 61 following complications from surgery. A family representative made the announcement on Sunday. While the statement did not say when or where the actor died, Rollin Stone reported that he passed away on Saturday.

Tributes to the late actor have poured in across social media.

Paxton also appeared in TV series such as Big Love and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as popular movies including The Terminator and True Lies. Paxton was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2012 for his work in the HBO miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. He also scored a Golden Globe nomination in 2010 for Big Love.  

Bill Paxton Cause of Death

Paxton died due to complications from surgery, the family said in a statement. On Saturday, he underwent heart surgery, Unfortunately, he suffered a fatal stroke during post-operation complications, according to reports.

“It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery,” the statement said.

Paxton had not announced publicly that he was suffering from an illness or that he intended to undergo heart surgery. Over the last year, he had remained active in film and television.

Most recently, Paxton had served as a series regular on the TV show Training Day as well as appearing in three movies in the past year.

Paxton is survived by his wife, Louise Newbury, and their two children, James and Lydian.

“A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker,” his family said in a statement. “Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.”

AMC’s The Walking Dead has come back to life in the ratings since returning for the second half of season seven. The mid-season premiere last week scored 15.9 million total viewers in the Nielsen live+3 ratings and last night’s episode is shaping up to be a big one as well. This comes as welcome news to the network after the first half of season seven saw a noticeable decline in viewers. While fans and critics can still debate the actual quality of the series, it’s clear that The Walking Dead is still a ratings behemoth.

The host surprised a bus load of people who thought they were on an L.A. celebrity tour by actually bringing them into the ceremony. Yeah, the Academy Awards ceremony. Now this bit could have been incredibly awkward and fallen flat, but thanks to Kimmel’s natural charm the gimmick was absolutely hilarious. Random normal people interacting with A-list celebrities? Uhhh, what just happened?

Due to an envelope malfunction, La La Land was incorrectly named the Best Picture winner at this year’s Academy Awards. As the film’s producers were making their heartfelt speeches, word quickly began to spread around them that a mistake had been made. It was revealed that Moonlight had actually be awarded the Best Picture honor and the cast and crew awkwardly came on stage as La La Land‘s squad stood around confused but with a gracious acceptance of their defeat.

It was easily the most bizarre thing in Oscars history and we can’t wait to watch it over and over for the rest of eternity.

Now is a pretty good time to be working at Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, particularly if you’re a fan of college basketball.

On Monday, Buffett appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box and made an enticing offer. His company will give $1 million a year for life to any employee who can correctly guess the Sweet 16 round in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Sh*t just got extraordinarily real for March Madness.

“We also have a prize of $100,000 for whoever goes the furthest,” Buffett said. “Last year, we had two fellows that tied. One of them knew a lot about basketball; the other didn’t know anything about basketball, but they each got $50,000 out of it.”

Last year saw north of 85,000 contest entries. This year, Buffett is expecting more than 100,000 entries.

March Madness will begin on March 14 and end on April 3.

Buffett has long been a fan of college basketball. In 2014, Berkshire’s Quicken Loans offered a staggering $1 billion for anyone who filled out a perfect March Madness bracket. Then again, the odds of doing it are 1 in 9.2 quintillion, so…

Good luck, bracketologists. Get out there and win some money.

Netflix has continued to dominate the movie and television industry, and for good reason, especially with some of its newest releases. No, the second season of Stranger Things obviously will not be in the lineup, but the new releases for March are still pretty stacked. Movies like The Waterboy and Jurassic Park will be at your disposal, as well as acclaimed shows Better Call Saul and Trailer Park Boys. Selena Gomez’s new show, 13 Reasons Why, will also make its debut.

Unfortunately, Netflix will be getting rid of some all-time classics. The incredibly realistic Jaws films will be leaving, so I’d utilize the last two days of February by binge-watching. One of the ultimate party movies, National Lampoon’s Animal House, will also be moving to extinction on the platform.

Mardi Gras 2017 falls on Tuesday, February 28. So, bosses, if your employees aren’t at work on Wednesday, March 1, you’ll know why.

The most popular time to visit New Orleans is the long weekend before Mardi Grad (February 24-28) and into the wild celebration that is Mardi Gras. This way, you catch the best parades (Endymion, Bacchus, Zulu, Rex) and all of the festive blow-outs across the city while getting a leg up on the drinking competition.

Mardi Gras (otherwise known as Fat Tuesday) is the last day of the Carnival season and always comes the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent (convenient timing).

Mardi Gras History

Mardi Gras can trace its origins back to medieval Europe, from Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. In France, the traditional revelry of “Boeuf Gras” made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to the colonies.

On March 2, 1699, French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptise Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville landed roughly 60 miles south of New Orleans. He named the area “Pointe du Mardi Gras” after his crew realized it was the eve of the holiday. Bienville soon established “Fort Louis de la Louisiane” in 1702. A year later, the small settlement celebrated America’s first Mardi Gras.

But Bienville wasn’t done laying the ground work of American history quite yet. In 1718, he established New Orleans. Within 12 years, Mardi Gras was openly celebrated in the streets where it still is today. Of course, it took a few decades for the holiday to begin resembling the parade-heavy drinking fest that it is now, but we’re thankful for the transition.

Well, college basketball is amazing. Gonzaga (29-1) dropped their first game of the year (in the regular-season finale, no less) to knock them out of the No. 1 spot, proving once again that we really know nothing about the game at all and that is why we play it. Other than Gonzaga, the Zags and Villanova both dropped home games while Butler handled the Wildcats and Xavier. The Bears have been exceeding expectations all year.

Elsewhere, Duke struggled against Syracuse and Miami while a few surprise teams made some noise.

College students frequently bitch about the oppressive rules and regulations of their universities. But next time you start whining about something as trivial as the soda machine in the dining hall running out of Dr. Pepper, remember Bangor University.

Bangor University is home to Shiromini Satkunarajah, one of the smartest students they have. Unfortunately, Satkunarajah is set to be deported back to her home of Sri Lanka just three months before her graduation. However, Bangor University isn’t going to let that happen without a fight.

Who Is Shiromini Satkunarajah

Shiromini Satkunarajah is a 20-year-old student at Bangor University. She is in her last year studying electronic engineering and is set to graduate in three months. Satkanuarajah is involved with student activities and is chair of the university’s Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers branch. Her and her mother are set to be deported from the UK back to Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

What Happened

Satkunarajah, 20, and her morther Roshani have been living in the UK for eight years. The pair were arrested earlier this month when they went to have their visas renewed and transferred to Yarl’s Wood immigration detention centre in Bedfordshire.

Satkunarajah, who is in her final year of studying electronic engineering, is a model student with phenomenal grades and impressive extracurriculars. That’s why Bangor University is stepping in.

“After learning about Shiromini’s situation at the end of last week, the vice-chancellor of Bangor University has written to the Home Office requesting that Shiromini Satkunarajah be allowed to remain in the UK to complete her studies,” a university spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.

“Our view is that it would be in the best interests of the student that she be allowed to complete her studies at Bangor University. The university has also been in touch with Shiromini to assure her that she has our support and we would very much wish to see her being able to complete her degree.”

A family member said of Shiromini, “She was scared when she was in the cell for two days…She was in a separate cell to her mum.” They continued that Shiromini would be devastated if she was sent back to Sri Lanka: “All of her family are here in the UK, all of her friends, aunties and cousins.

“She is really scared about going back to Sri Lanka. She reads the news and it makes her more scared, she think it’s dangerous there.

“She at least wants to stay for three months to finish her degree.” The family member described Shiromini as “really funny, intelligent, friendly and very popular.”

Others have now taken up Shiromini’s cause, including shadow Wales secretary Christina Rees.

Helen Merchant, a classmate of Shiromini’s, said: “Mini is a kind, gentle soul and an incredibly hard worker. She consistently achieves top grades; to snatch away her chances of graduating would be a tragedy.

“We’re doing everything we can at the students’ union to help her. You can sign the petition on change.org or tweet Qatar airlines to stop them allowing her to board her flight at 9pm on Tuesday.”

Las Vegas is hosting their first UFC show of the year, and it is shaping up to be one hell of a night. Woodley possesses an MMA record of 16-3-1 compared to a 13-1-1 record for Thompson. The champion has won five of his last six fights and should have the advantage in later rounds.
