Sean Penn … You Good Dog?

0

CBS

Sean Penn … you good my guy? I mean, talk about a cry for help, am I right? I know Sean Penn comes from a different era — an era when smoking cigarettes were commonplace — but lighting up during the middle of a late night TV interview? Hair an absolute mess? Talking openly about Ambien? So, I ask again: Sean Penn, you good?

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, a clearly disheveled Sean Penn lit up a boge mid-interview (and not just one, but two) before letting Colbert know he’s still feeling the effects of the Ambien he took the night before. Now, while he doesn’t mention his hairstyle, it certainly doesn’t help.

For lack of a better term, Sean Penn gonna Sean Penn, so this type of behavior isn’t necessarily out of the norm for the legendary actor, and despite his hazy appearance, him and Colbert actually delved into a decent conversation about why he doesn’t enjoy acting anymore and the creative process behind his new dystopian novel, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff.

Penn may have peaked right before us millennials became fully aware of him, but the dude is a five-time nominated, two-time Academy Award-winning actor. Despite his on-camera smoking habit and cocaine-binge haircut, the man deserves our respect. Plus, when you are Sean Penn, you can get away with behavior like this? Might as well, right?

The Las Vegas Golden Knights Inaugural Season Has Been One For The Record Books

March 25th, 2018 would’ve potentially been a legendary night for the Las Vegas Golden Knights, if the Edmonton Oilers won their game against the Anaheim Ducks that would’ve allowed the Knights to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Although the Oilers loss was a set back for the Knights, they’re not out yet! Considering the Golden Knights hold a 7 point lead in the Pacific division currently, it’s safe to say their playoff spot is secure. But let’s talk about the incredible journey that led this expansion team up to this point.

2017 NHL Expansion Draft: June 21st, 2017

Instagram Photo

The draft for the Las Vegas Golden Knights took place in the T-Moblie Arena, located in Paradise, Nevada. This arena was going to become the Golden Knights new home. The draft took place during the NHL Awards ceremony.

The Golden Knights received some very talented players from the following teams. Marc- Andre Fleury the Pittsburgh Penguins goalie and James Neal of the Nashville Predators, just to name a few. These players alone really set the mood for the fantastic inaugural season the Golden Knights had ahead of them.

October 2017: Vegas Strong

Instagram Photo

October 10, 2017, was the first time the Golden Knights stepped onto their home arena ice as an official team of the NHL. The T-Moblie arena was packed with fan support that night following the Route 91 Festival tragedy, which took place only 9 days prior.  On October 1st a mass shooting took place at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, located on the Las Vegas strip. 58 people were killed, and over 400 were injured during the concert event when a gunman opened fire off the balcony of the 32nd floor in Mandalay Bay Hotel.

To honor those fallen during the opening ceremony of the Golden Knights first official home game, all the message boards around the arena that would typically be showcasing ads displayed the phrase “VEGAS STRONG.”  Before the puck drop lead by survivors of the shooting, the ice had the names of the victims projected onto it. Following that tribute, there was a moment of silence. The Golden Knights took this tragedy has their chance to shine a light of hope on their new home. The Knights weren’t going to let Vegas Strong be just a phrase to them. The team as a whole were going to make it words for them to live by.

Inaugural Season Breakdown: 2017-2018

Instagram Photo

Throughout the Las Vegas Knights inaugural season, they kept “Vegas Strong” in their hearts not just in the way they played the game. The Knights started their season winning 8 out of the first 9 games they played. They are the first team to manage this unbelievable accomplishment. In December despite some of the Knights best players suffering injuries, they went on to set another expansion team record of six straight wins, which would help the team make up for that 10th game loss.

On February 1st, 2018 the Golden Knights beat the odds when they set the expansion record for most wins in a debut season, with 34 wins out of only 50 games. Most recently the team set the record for the most points in an inaugural season, with 84 points as their total. Midway through this memorable season the Golden Knights also got Tomas Tatar of the Detriot Red Wings as an added addition to this unstoppable team. James Neal has also proven to be the top scorer on the team this season, with 6 game-winning goals. Leading behind by one is William Karlsson with a total of 5 game-winning goals so far. The players on this team are truly a force to be reckoned with.

The Golden Knights currently have a higher ticket revenue than The Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, and the Philadephia Flyers! They’ve managed to sell 13,500 out of 17,000 seats in the arena! The Knights could potentially make a profit of 76 million dollars in ticket revenue next season, based on the success this opening season has brought them!

The Golden Knights have truly defined what it means to be “Vegas Strong.” They are making a name for themselves and the state of Nevada. I can’t wait to see them make it to the playoffs! I have a feeling they will clinch that spot sooner than we think! For now, we can blame the Oilers for the extended wait.

Five Famous Soccer Players To Leave Retirement

Soccer star Landon Donovan recently announced that he would be leaving his retirement to return to the sport he loves and signed on to play in Mexico. Donovan, who holds numerous records in the MLS and also with the U.S Men’s National team, is hardly the first player to decide that he wasn’t ready to hang up his cleats and came back to play.

Here are some other players that have returned to the pitch to play some more soccer (or football, for all you non-American types.)

Landon Donovan

Instagram Photo

Donovan has collected serious accolades throughout his career history. He is the all-time lead goal scorer for the LA Galaxy, the MLS, and the Men’s National Team. Additionally, he has appeared in three World Cups. Now, the forward/attacking midfielder has come out of retirement– again. He previously retired from the game in August 2014 after many seasons with MLS LA Galaxy, then came back to play for LA Galaxy in September 2016. In March 2017, Donovan hung in the towel for what fans thought would be the last time. However, the 36-year-old recently signed on to play with Liga MX team Club León. So why Mexico? Why come back? Donovan says that he finally found something in Mexico that he lost a long time ago, which was his love for soccer.

In addition to Donovan, here are four other famous soccer players that retired from the game a little too early and just had to come back.

Romário

Instagram Photo

In his 23 years as a professional player, the Brazilian soccer star retired at age 42 in 2008 after scoring over 1000 goals. A year later, in 2009, the striker came out of retirement to play for the America Football Club. His late father was a huge supporter of the team, and to honor this, Romário put back on his cleats and played a couple more games. After fulfilling his promise to his father, the 43-year-old officially called it quits and has since gone into politics, becoming a member of the Brazilian senate.

Henrik Larsson

Instagram Photo

As a 32-year-old in 2002, Henrik Larsson quit the Swedish National Team after the World Cup. Then he came out of international retirement to play in Euro 2004. During this time, the striker continued playing on his club team, although in the summer of 2004, he did switch from Celtic FC to FC Barcelona. In 2006, Larsson switched from Barcelona to Swedish club team Helsingborg and additionally declared that he was once again retiring from international play. Euro 2008 then convinced Larsson to come back and play with the Swedish International Team for one more go. Finally in October 2009, the 38-year-old announced his decision to retire from his current Swedish team, Helsingborg as well as the Swedish National Team. In 2013, he did make one more professional appearance with the Swedish soccer club, Högaborg to play alongside his 16-year-old son.

Zinedine Zidane

Instagram Photo

An attacking midfielder for the France national team, Cannes, Bordeaux, Juventus and Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane was awarded FIFA’s World Player of the Year three times. He was most known for his superb ball control and excellent leadership. After France was eliminated from Euro 2004, Zidane declared his retirement from international soccer. Then for the 2006 World Cup, France was in danger of qualifying, so manager Raymond Domenech reached out to Zidane, the then 34-year-old, asking him to come back as a captain. However, during their match against Italy, Zidane got into an argument with Italy’s Marco Materazzi and ended up head-butting him. This resulted in Zidane receiving a red card and the immediate termination of his soccer career. He remains involved in the professional soccer world as Real Madrid’s current manager.

Pelé

Instagram Photo

The Brazilian forward is known to be one of the greatest players in soccer history. Pelé made the bicycle kick famous, won three World Cups, and scored 1281 goals out of the 1363 games he played in. In 1971, at the age of 34, he played his last game for the Brazil National Team. The Brazil government urged him to play in the 1974 World Cup, but Pelé refused. Then in 1975, Pelé came out of retirement to play for the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League where he signed on to a $2.8 million contract, becoming the highest paid athlete in the world. Finally, in 1977 Pelé said goodbye to the crowds chanting his name and retired for good. After retiring, he became very involved in philanthropy work, including UNICEF and currently acts as the FIFA Ambassador against racism among many other things.

Pi Kappa Alpha At SMU Suspended For Over 4 Years

The Beta Zeta chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Southern Methodist University has been suspended for four and a half years due to code of conduct violations. Officials at SMU announced the suspension on Monday, March 26.

According to SMU’s school newspaper, The Daily Campus, the fraternity was suspended after an investigation into hazing offenses by the fraternity. The Daily Campus reports the fraternity members forced new members to “consume onions, hot sauce, eggs and milk” and “required or encouraged” new members to drink alcohol.

SMU told Pi Kappa Alpha to cease all organizational activity while the university conducted its investigation.

via The Daily Campus:

The fraternity also participated in “The Gauntlet,” a booze-hazing ritual explicitly prohibited in the organization’s current accountability agreement. Another instance was a call to the SMU Police Department needing assistance at an off-campus location in February. When The Daily Campus originally requested the police report, the department only released minimal details after a ruling by the attorney general.

The email also alleges “underground” membership tactics used by the fraternity and the discovery of the smell of marijuana at an off-campus location in February. The suspension means PIKE will be required to immediately leave the chapter house and cannot host any PIKE-sponsored events. The university has arranged alternative living arrangements for those who lived in the house, and will provide “other resources to help with their transition,” the spokesman said.

Pi Kappa Alpha is the third fraternity to be suspended from the SMU campus since Spring 2016.

In response to incidents like these, other fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who were shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

FDNY Lieutenant Michael Davidson Is Given A Hero’s Funeral At St. Patrick’s Cathedral

On March 22nd, a fire broke out on the Harlem set of Motherless Brooklyn, a new film starring Ed Norton & Bruce Willis, that tragically claimed the life of 15-year FDNY veteran Michael Davidson. Davidson had heroically gone into the blaze, searching for survivors, but was overwhelmed by the smoke and flames and lost his life. Davidson left behind a wife and four children.

Davidson was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant, and the reaction from the city he protected and loved was one of consolation and remembrance. On March 27th, Davidson was given the funeral that he deserved at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. Firefighters from all over came to honor this man who so selflessly gave his own life in an attempt to save others. People arrived from all over the New York Metro area and even other cities such as Boston to pay their respects.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan,  Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York, was quoted as saying ““I brought a palm for Michael, for the casket, because it’s Palm Sunday and I said it’s gotta be a consolation, doesn’t it? That this week of all weeks, when we think about the death and the cross and the one who said, ‘greater love than this no one has than to give his life for another.’ Jesus said that and now we got Michael as a living, radiant example of that,”

Davidson’s fellow firefighters and brothers-in-arms had nothing but glowing praise for him. Captain Daniel Kudlak said, “From day one he was a rock, he was the real deal,” and Lieutenant Greg Damato followed with “I’m going to miss him, I love him, and I’ll definitely keep him in my memory forever…He would go through a brick wall for you.”

Donations have poured in for the family and the FDNY Foundation to further honor Davidson’s life and sacrifice. You can donate here.

Rest in peace Lieutenant Davidson, you are truly a hero.

Markelle Fultz’s Return: How Can He Impact The 76ers Going Forward?

0
0

Markelle Fultz is back. The first overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft and the final relic of “The Process” returned to action for the Sixers on March 26th after 68 games of inactivity. While it still remains unclear precisely why Fultz missed so much playing time, his absence can be attributed to the combination of a fishy shoulder injury, the bizarre loss of his shooting touch, and a subsequent confidence drain. Without Fultz, the 76ers, led by young stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, have managed a 43-30 record and the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference.

In his pregame media availability, Sixers coach Brett Brown announced that Markelle Fultz would return to the Sixers lineup for the first time since October 23rd. Brown was visibly relieved to have his 19-year-old point guard back, as if a weight had been lifted off the entire franchise’s shoulders. Brown, with “goosebumps”, describes Fultz’s return as Fultz’s own decision, and references the arduous personal journey Fultz has been on: “I give that kid credit”.

Fultz checked into the game with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter and was greeted by the Wells Fargo Center with a standing ovation by incensed, loyal Philadelphians. About a minute later, Fultz hit his first field goal on an assist from Joel Embiid–a wide-open layup that he looked like he could have dunked, but instead sensibly and carefully guided in.

Donovan Mitchell had some constructive criticism for his draft classmate. Mitchell, the 13th pick in 2017, is a Rookie of the Year frontrunner along with Fultz’s teammate Ben Simmons. Like Simmons, Mitchell has smashed expectations, leading the Utah Jazz to a 42-32 record and playoff positioning in a dicey Western Conference.

Unsurprisingly, folks were waiting to see the jump shot. Fultz air-balled his first one. But his daring showed confidence, and in the second half, he would hit from both the foul line and the left elbow.

Fultz played incredibly well–in just 14 minutes, he scored 10 points on 5-13 shooting, including an improbable circus shot (which probably should have been an and-1). Proving that he’s going to be a valuable asset to a scary Sixers team as they storm into the postseason, Fultz racked up 8 assists and grabbed 4 offensive rebounds.

Following the blowout win over the Nuggets, Fultz was doused in water by teammate Robert Covington and praised by a very proud Embiid. Embiid tells Molly Sullivan, “that’s another big-time win, and he played a big role in it.” Fultz then elaborates on his decision to play, attributing it to “a little confidence” and an itch to play with his “great teammates”. He explains, “I was just focused on helping the team get the win” as opposed to making any statements about his own play. Fultz and the rest of his team are devoting their attention to the playoffs. With nine games to go, Fultz should have his legs under him by the first round.

Budding superstar Embiid isn’t selfish about his spotlight. He is eager to maintain a healthy team culture, which relies heavily on friendship and trust among the Sixers’ young core. Fultz praised his teammates first and foremost as those who believed in him and continued working patiently with him while he prepared to return to NBA play.

Postgame, Coach Brown addressed his players in the locker room, complimenting them on “another dominant third period” which led to a significant win over the Nuggets, who are fighting a losing battle for a spot in the Western Conference playoffs. In what has become a ritual with the Player of the Game, Brown singles out Fultz to ring a miniature Liberty Bell. Based on his pregame press conference, Brown was certainly full of excitement and relief for Fultz and hopeful for the Sixers’ still-brightening future.

Markelle Fultz’s extended absence has been both confusing to the general public and nearly forgettable–the 76ers have far exceeded the preseason expectations which forecasted a healthy and productive Fultz. But without Fultz, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid have built something magnificent. The two are playing their first full seasons together after missing a combined 297 games prior to the 2017-18 season, and are finally performing to their potentials on the biggest stage in the world. Embiid and Simmons have come back to make a terrifying splash in the NBA, centering Philly on a map we haven’t seen since Allen Iverson’s prime. Philadelphia trusted the process, and it’s paying off. But we have to wonder: what will Markelle Fultz’s role be with this team, long-term?

We’ve Got Some UFO News Coming Out Of Arizona

Look, I get really excited about any and all alien news, so please do not ask me how much time I spent making the lead image for this article. It is what it is. On to the aliens. *Jerry Seinfeld Voice*: “So, what’s the deal with aliens?”

I’ll tell you what the deal with aliens are: they have visited us before and will do so again. That’s why I get so hyped when I see alien stories in the mass media because its so rare for stories of the unknown to make it that far into the mainstream.

According to reports from the Huffington Post, citing The Drive, pilots of two different aircrafts reported a UFO high over southern Arizona last month. One of the pilots — a commercial pilot flying a passenger jet for American Airlines — said the object “was above 40,000 feet” and “had a big reflection.” He said he could not make out what the object was but it “had a big reflection” and was going in the opposite direction.

via Huffington Post:

Pilots on two separate aircraft reported an unidentified flying object high over southern Arizona last month. One of them, a commercial pilot flying a passenger jet for American Airlines, said the object was above 40,000 feet and “had a big reflection.”

The Feb. 24th incident began when the pilot of a Learjet reported an object to Albuquerque Center air traffic control while flying over the desert in southeastern Arizona. The reported altitude would put the UFO well above the range of consumer drones. Yet the vague nature of the sightings doesn’t completely rule out balloons or experimental aircraft.

The sightings occurred near the Davis–Monthan Air Force Base, and about 100 miles from Luke Air Force Base. Several other bases are within 500 miles. However, Lunsford implied that air traffic controllers would likely know if there was military aircraft in the air.

As all of my fellow alien buffs will have likely released by now, the location of these UFO sightings was approximately 500 miles west of the 1947 UFO “crash” at Roswell, New Mexico.

You can listen to the full audio of the pilot’s unidentified flying object report over on The Drive.

Roseanne Barr Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Roseanne Worth?

Roseanne Barr is a famous American television star known for her role in the 90’s sitcom named after her first name, “Roseanne”.

Barr’s career slowed down after Roseanne ran its course until 1997, but she still continued to find a way to be in the spotlight, so much that her net worth continues to be higher than most people think.

Net Worth

Roseanne Barr, 65, as of 2018 has a net worth of $80 million.

Early Life

Roseanne Cherrie Barr was born on November 3, 1952, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Barr was born to into a working-class Jewish family to parents Helen and Jerome. She was the oldest of four children.

At three years old, Barr was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy on the left side of her face but was told years later that it was only a temporary phase. When she was six years old, Barr took to the stage for the first time when she lectured at LDS churches around Utah, which eventually led her to become president of her Mormon youth group.

Barr was unfortunately struck by a car at the age of 16 causing a traumatic brain injury. The accident caused a radical change in her behavior which led her to be institutionalized for an eight-month span at Utah State Hospital.

Two years later in 1970, Roseanne Barr decided to move out of her parents’ house at the age of 18.

In those nine seasons, Barr would win an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, Kids Choice Award, and three American Comedy Awards. The final two seasons of her show, Barr earned $40 million, second-most to Oprah Winfrey in show business at the time.

After Roseanne, in 1989, the tv star released her autobiography, Roseanne– My Life As A Woman. The same year, Barr made her film debut in She-Devil. Two years later, she made an appearance in another film, Look Who’s Talking Too. Her performance earned her a Golden Raspberry Award.

Barr continued to keep making appearances on television and film throughout the 90’s into the early 2000s. Her second book, My Lives, was released in 1992. She would host Saturday Night Live three times between 1991 and 1994. NHL Rumored To Be Joining Forces With Women’s Hockey League

Women’s ice hockey shined during the 2018 Olympic Winter games this year and the NHL noticed. While they forced their players to be absent from the games due to the interruption it would cause to their regular season, plus insurance and boarding costs, it fell to the ladies to go out and represent the USA on the ice. The Women’s USA team brought home the gold with their win against Canada with a score of 3-2 ending in a shootout. These girls received the second gold medal for the USA in women’s ice hockey history since 1998, which apparently piqued the interest of the National Hockey League, who found themselves thoroughly impressed by this feat.

The NHL Makes Their Case:

Instagram Photo

The NHL commissioner Gary Bettman recently released a statement claiming he wanted to be a “one league-entity.” But only if the two women’s rival leagues the CWHL (Canadien Women’s Hockey League) and the NWHL (National Women’s Hockey League) became one. Cassie Campbell, a former women’s hockey player, has urged the commissioners of both leagues to make an agreement, allowing the two to become one. This could benefit both the women’s leagues by having them come together as one unstoppable force. This would mean more notoriety for the women as athletes and the potential for a better paycheck wouldn’t be bad either. The perk of having the NHL behind women’s ice hockey would be astronomical but could come at a high cost.

The Risk Factor:

Instagram Photo

But in joining the NHL, there would be added risk, which could include shutdowns due to disagreements on players salaries or the women’s league no longer being able to play in the Olympic games, for the same reason the NHL players weren’t allowed to play in the 2018 games. There’s also always the potential for the NHL to recant and back out of their deal with the women’s league in the middle of their professional season. Which would mean the women’s league has to start all over from scratch, after losing everything they built for themselves. The only way the women’s league and the NHL could come together as one would be for the women’s league to form a union. That way the NHL has to honor their needs and can’t back out of the arrangement last minute.

The CWHL commissioner Brenda Andress following the rumors and statement made by Cassie Campbell; released a statement of her own. In which she stated that her team would be following the same format they have been next season. Nothing is going to change, well at least not yet. As far as the future goes, it is still unknown if the NHL will be able to work out a deal towards their future affiliation in professional women’s ice hockey.

Those Baldwins have some genes, huh? Sure, Stephen’s daughter Hailey gets most of the attention, and rightfully so, but 22-year-old Ireland (who could pass for like 30) ain’t no JV athlete either. Baldwin, of course, is the daughter of actress Kim Basinger and actor Alec Baldwin. A decade ago, when she was 11, Ireland was in the headlines after Alec left her an insane and angry voicemail.

Daniel Tosh Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Daniel Worth Today?

Standup comedian and host of his own show, Tosh.O, on Comedy Central, Daniel Tosh has become a household name in comedy. His non-politically correct humor has drawn some criticism but also earned him a huge fanbase. He says that he’s not a racist or misogynist but simply finds those jokes funny. Either way, his humor has served him very well and garnered a nice amount of wealth. Let’s take a look at Daniel’s career, beginning with his net worth.

Daniel Tosh Net Worth As Of 2018: $16 Million

By 2018, Tosh has earned him a sizable amount of wealth, somewhere in the area of $16 million. Between his show and stand up tours, Tosh has a few different ways of obtaining money. Let’s take a look at his career and see how he came to acquire that money.

The Early Years

Instagram Photo

Tosh was born on May 29th, 1975, in Germany, but grew up in Titusville, Florida, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He graduated from high school in 1993 and went on to attend the University of Central Florida, graduating in 1996 with a degree in marketing. One of his first jobs was a telemarketer, but eventually left that career behind and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy.

Following his graduation, Tosh began performing in comedy clubs everywhere, honing his skills. In 1998, he appeared as one of the “new faces” at the 1998 ‘Just For Laughs’ comedy festival in Montreal. His first act was televised in 2000, and he began to earn a following.

2001-2009

In 2001, Tosh got his big break when he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. He also appeared on Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel Live! These appearances cemented his status as an up and coming comedian.

He became a regular on different radio shows, including The Bob & Tom Show and Loveline. Comedy Central also aired a stand-up special of his, Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious. He also appeared on MTV’s Punkd and the Mike Myers movie The Love Guru.

In 2009, Comedy Central decided to give Tosh his own TV show, the appropriately named Tosh.O. On the show, he showcases a variety of internet clips and offers commentary on them. The show was a smash hit and has gone for nine seasons, with a tenth set to premiere in 2018.

In addition to Tosh.O, Comedy Central aired another one of his comedy specials, Daniel Tosh: Happy Thoughts. He also produced and starred on the show Brickleberry, where he voiced the character of Molloy. That show was canceled after three seasons.

His “rude” humor has served him well, and his wealth is proof positive of this fact.

LiAngelo Ball Declares For The 2018 NBA Draft

In yet another twist in the bizarre, unending Ball family saga, middle son LiAngelo today declared for the 2018 NBA Draft. LiAngelo, with his brother LaMelo and big mouthed papa Lavar, has been living in Lithuania where he and his brother are playing in that countries basketball league for Vytautas Prienu in a small city called Prienai. To this point, LiAngelo has averaged 15.6 points in what is considered by many a lesser European league. Making an NBA team will be an uphill climb for Ball, whose older brother Lonzo if finishing up his rookie year with the Los Angeles Lakers after being selected second overall in the 2017 draft.

It’s been a tumultuous year for LiAngelo. He was hardly a normal, run of the mill three-star recruit coming out of high school, thanks to his controversially clownish father and famous older brother. Like Lonzo, LiAngelo enrolled in UCLA. Not that long into the season, LiAngelo and two teammates named Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were arrested during a team trip in China for shoplifting sunglasses.

In typical Ball style, the arrests caused an international incident only relinquishing when the United States government asked for the players’ release from Chinese prison as a favor. When LiAngelo, Riley, and Hill returned to California they were suspended indefinitely. In response, Lavar yanked LiAngelo off the team and out of UCLA. As Lonzo adjusted to life in the NBA, the rest of the Ball family headed off for the pastures of Lithuania.

Many draft pundits do not believe that Ball will be drafted. Nonetheless, it has been reported that he will work out for “several” teams. He’s shot the ball quite well in the nine games he’s played in for Vytautas Prienu, averaging three three-pointers a game on forty-five percent shooting. One potential destination for LiAngelo that has been floated by many is the Los Angeles Lakers. Lavar infamously stated that he would make sure Lonzo left the legendary franchise if his brothers were not signed. How seriously the Lakers will take that threat is unclear, but it is entirely plausible that at a minimum they will throw a training camp invite to Liangelo.

Who Are The Top 3 Favorites In The Western Conference After Curry’s Injury?

0

If there’s ever a time you don’t want your all-world point guard to go down with a leg injury, it’s probably with less than a month to go before you’re expected to make a deep playoff push. This is, however, the fate of a couple teams in the NBA, with perhaps none more crucial than Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. A case can be made that the Boston Celtics, the East’s two-seed who just lost their own star guard for at least a few weeks (though perhaps much longer than that), are in an eerily similar predicament to the Warriors’ and Curry’s MCL woes. And that case would probably be a strong one, save for one aspect: Expectations. The fact of the matter is, even with a fully healthy Kyrie Irving in the playoffs, nobody knows how deep the Celtics can go. They lack the acumen and precedent, Irving included. If Irving was healthy and the playoffs began today, there would still be some questions as to whether Boston could so easily dispose of an exciting young Milwaukee team, let alone dominate against the Raptors and the Cavaliers when those match-ups inevitably present themselves. For the Warriors, expectation is the least of their worries. With a fully healthy team, the belief that they’d cruise to at least the conference semi-finals was more or less a given. It was, at the very least, a well-earned expectation. So now what can we expect?

3. Portland Trail Blazers

Instagram Photo

The Trail Blazers could play anyone from the eighth-seeded Jazz (42-32) to the currently fourth-seeded Thunder (44-31) depending on how the next two weeks shake out. Regardless, Portland deserves to the third spot in the West and has earned Dark Horse contender status for a deep Finals run, a thought made all the more compelling by the many unknowns surrounding Curry’s return and subsequent performance. While guards Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum have proven that they can go shot for shot with any opposing tandem in the league, it will come down to whether Portland’s bench depth can hold its own with units like San Antonio, Minnesota and yes, Golden State. They’re a class below the very best right now, but they’ve proven that they belong in the conversation.

2. Houston Rockets

Instagram Photo

If you can’t tell already, acumen and experience mean a lot more to me than a win-loss record. Houston just doesn’t have that mystique yet. They’re easily the most exciting team to watch come this year’s playoffs for that very reason — there’s a very real suspense to whether Harden take it to the next level against elite competition, to see if Chris Paul can top his Hall of Fame career off with a Finals appearance, to see if D’Antoni’s offensive genius can finally break through the class ceiling of playoff fortune. And they’re a good team, a really good team, perhaps the perfect conference finals foil to Golden State. They just haven’t earned the right to be a favorite yet, even at their best.

1. Golden State Warriors

Instagram Photo

The Warriors, with or without Curry, are a dynasty in the making as far as anyone should be concerned. They are the 90s Chicago Bulls, they are the Lakers of the early 2000s, they are the favorite until proven otherwise, and they’re built to be that for the foreseeable future. The strength of the West now and over the past decade shouldn’t be questioned; there’s just nothing easy about doing what the Warriors have done. (Okay, alright, Kevin Durant helps a bit.) While Curry hasn’t ruled out playing in the first-round, which is set to begin on April 14th, a first-round exit wouldn’t be inconceivable. It should, however, be considered highly unlikely. Kevin Durant will do what Kevin Durant does, dominating on both sides of the ball. Klay Thompson will find his shot, and Draymond Green will “slip” and elbow Ricky Rubio into the third row. Then Curry will come back, and everyone will be given the option to bet against him. He’s made it difficult do that so far.

Do you think Curry’s injury has potential to shake up the playoff picture in the West? Did we rank Golden State too high? Are we severely underestimating the Denver Nuggets? (I genuinely hope so). Let us know in the comments!

Uncovering Isaiah: What Contributed To His Disappointing 2018 Season?

0
0

On March 26th, it was announced that Isaiah Thomas had parted from the Los Angeles Lakers in order to address his nagging hip. The torn labrum injury which kept him out of the tail-end of the Boston Celtics’ 2017 playoff run was reported to be something more severe the following September. By then, Thomas had been traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a jarring deal for Kyrie Irving; Thomas wouldn’t play a game for the Cavs until January 2018. Still, Thomas at least appeared to have returned too early: his stats were down, and his mobility was noticeably labored. It became apparent that a hip injury is a bit more complicated than a sprained ankle or a knee strain–obvious enough for the Cavaliers to do away with Thomas as part of a midseason team rebuild. Shipped to L.A., Thomas began looking like the I.T. of old. Apparently, he wasn’t yet feeling like the I.T. of old.

This isn’t how Isaiah Thomas expected to close out his 2017-18 campaign. But nothing about this season has been comfortable for Thomas, who’s watched his career transform into something much uglier than it was shaping up to be a year ago. Let’s take a look back at Isaiah’s difficult, storied season and what lit its fuse.

Isaiah Thomas is short. And in spite of his talent, he will be stigmatized by his size until he retires from the NBA. NBA players under six feet tall have, historically, had to work immeasurably hard against the 6’7″ benchmark in order to prove they belong. But to be the focal point of a franchise? Good luck.

In 2017, Isaiah Thomas looked ready to break the status quo. Enchanting Bostonians with his reliably high-functioning fourth-quarter play (affectionately dubbed “I.T. Time”) and his dazzling affinity for setting new career-highs nearly every night, it wasn’t long before he’d hear “MVP” chanted at him as he stood at the foul line in TD Garden. Thomas had hardly been a Celtic two and a half seasons, yet Boston fans already regarded him with Bird-like adoration. Isaiah willed the Celtics to the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference, besting LeBron James and the Cavaliers.

Instagram Photo

Two months before inevitably meeting the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, Thomas injured his right hip during a game against the Timberwolves. He would miss the next two games, but returned to action with no apparent lingering damage, averaging 27.8 points over the last twelve games of the regular season. The Celtics entered the playoffs with quintessential green-and-white confidence, reminiscent of the Championship run of nine years prior.

Instagram Photo

While the Cavaliers were sweeping the Pacers and Raptors out of recent memory, Boston was struggling through long series with the Bulls and the Wizards. Isaiah officially re-aggravated his hip in Game 6 of a grueling seven against Washington; after Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals, in which he scored just 2 points in 18 minutes, Thomas was officially ruled out for the rest of the postseason. The Celtics credited a “right femoral-acetabular impingement with a labral tear.” They lost the series 4-1 without Isaiah, who described sitting out as one of the most frustrating things he’s ever had to deal with.

Isaiah, set for free agency in 2018, had been campaigning for a max payday. Many felt that he’d earned it. He came in fifth in MVP voting behind players who’d produced historic seasons: only Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and LeBron James came before Thomas. It wouldn’t have been controversial for Celtics President Danny Ainge to offer Isaiah a five-year max contract.

Instagram Photo

Come July, Kyrie Irving would change everything.

When Irving requested a trade out of Cleveland, more attention was devoted to his allegedly fractured relationship with LeBron James and his frustration at an NBA Finals loss than to the more personal reasons why he might want to pursue something new. Kyrie’s shocking request of the franchise that drafted him culminated in a summertime premier point guard exchange. But just as surprising was Danny Ainge blindsiding Isaiah Thomas, with whom he’d had a good relationship, and on whose shoulders the Celtics just rode to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Mitch Lawrence of Forbes argues that the Celtics’ decision to trade Isaiah before his contract year came down to money and Kyrie was something akin to a consolation prize. The forward-thinking Ainge didn’t want to expend his salary cap on Isaiah’s max contract, and if it came down to it, would likely have offered I.T. a smaller three-year deal come 2018. Instead of taking a risk on an older player in Thomas, Ainge saw Irving as young, elite, and established–plus, his being half a foot taller than Isaiah undoubtedly was no blemish on his record.

In addition to the finances, there’s no question that Isaiah’s lame hip played a role in the trade. The existence of it actually put the Irving-Thomas trade on hold until the Cavs could secure something extra from the Celtics, hinting that Isaiah’s hip could be a long-term liability.

Opposed to surgery, Isaiah opted to rehab his hip. This didn’t dampen his spirits–he was excited by the opportunity to join LeBron James and felt winning a championship was imminent. But it was clear he wouldn’t be ready to play the 2017-18 season opener, and before long, he was a permanent fixture on the Cavs bench, clad in a black blazer. Mystery swirled around his return date, first projected to be around Christmastime, then January. I.T. was publicly working out on-court before Cavs games, and his shot was looking good. This gave little indication of what was to come.

Instagram Photo

Isaiah made his season debut for the Cavaliers on January 2nd. He would reveal later in the month that he was closer to “75, 80 percent” than to 100, and it showed: his shooting percentage was plummeting, and his defensive shortcomings were blinding. The Cavs struggled as they attempted to employ an aging lineup to no avail. It was rumored that Thomas was causing locker room tension; Isaiah, who is often vocal with the media, wouldn’t hesitate to point to where he and the Cavaliers were failing. It was a small sample size in the doldrums of the season, but the Cavs went 7-8 in the 15 games I.T. played for them. On February 8, six weeks after his first game for the wine and gold, Isaiah was traded to the Lakers.

Considering how GM Koby Altman and the Cavaliers orchestrated their roster revamp, it’s hard to accuse them of targeting Isaiah as their most debilitating problem. The roster was simply weak. Jae Crowder, their supposed 3-and-D specialist, was underperforming in both areas. Dwyane Wade could only manage so much sixth-man duty at the ripe age of 36. Derrick Rose was inconsequential. Remaining members of the 2016 championship team J.R. Smith, Tristan Thompson, and Kevin Love were struggling by accessory. 22-year-old rookie Cedi Osman and 36-year-old José Calderón were often out-playing their most established teammates. The Cavaliers front office had a choice: change things immediately, or wait it out. But in order to save the season, and temporarily save LeBron James from prematurely deciding to leave Cleveland in the offseason, the Cavs acted.

Isaiah describes his stint with Cleveland as a “tough situation,” referring to a cocktail of difficulties: acclimating to new teammates, adjusting to a different system of play, and the difficulty of regaining personal rhythm. But when you’re playing next to the greatest basketball player in the world, everything is magnified. Cleveland pulled the trigger quickly, but Isaiah didn’t take it as personally as he did in Boston.

Instagram Photo

Isaiah reported to the Lakers, where he had little choice but to accept a sixth-man role behind L.A. phenom Lonzo Ball. Thomas would be assuming a veteran role on a team full of budding young players: Ball, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, and Kyle Kuzma are the Lakers’ headliners, and they’re all younger than 24.

In the context of the Cavaliers, Isaiah’s play for the Lakers has improved considerably: over 17 games, he’s averaged 15.6 points on more field goal attempts, with a better 3-point percentage. His assists are up too, despite only starting one game. But when we remember Boston, where Isaiah averaged 28.9 points and was an MVP candidate, these stats are off-putting.

Isaiah’s dreams of a max contract are fading. With his free agency pending, and L.A. purportedly looking to attract either one or two superstar free agents to put around their young core, it doesn’t seem likely that Isaiah will emerge from July a well-compensated Laker. And now that his notorious hip is back in the headlines, it’s even more difficult to predict where I.T. will end up this summer, nevermind how much he’ll be paid.

Isaiah Thomas is a special player. But his narrative has changed–NBA audiences now perceive him as a bad locker room guy who couldn’t handle playing with LeBron James, too short and chronically injured worth taking a financial risk on.

But let’s also remember that Isaiah Thomas is the guy who played through his younger sister’s tragic death, violently lost a tooth, and endured a crippling hip injury all in the same month just to prove his devotion to the Celtics. Isaiah Thomas has heart. He has the talent, and he has the will. Let’s see who gives him another chance.

Chris Mack Hired As University of Louisville’s Next Head Coach

The University of Louisville has found its new head basketball coach. Xavier’s Chris Mack has reportedly agreed to a 7-year contract with the school worth around $4 mil per year, according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. Mack leaves Xavier after being at the helm for 9 successful seasons. He continued Xavier’s ascend into a national power and constant NCAA tournament contender reaching the Big Dance eight of his nine seasons. In this most recent NCAA tournament, the Musketeers were a number 1 seed but the season ended in disappointment at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles in the round of 32.

Mack issued a thank you to Xavier.

Who will Chris Mack be replacing?

Instagram Photo

The Louisville basketball program was rocked by a scandal involving legendary coach Rick Pitino. The still ongoing FBI probe into college basketball linked Pitino and the program to fraud and corruption. Pitino resigned in October of 2017, and assistant coach David Padgett led the Cardinals for the 2017-2018 season. Under Padgett, Louisville went 22-14 and was left out of the NCAA tournament.

Who is Chris Mack?

Chris Mack played basketball in college for the University of Evansville before transferring to Xavier University for the final 2 years of his eligibility.

Directly after his playing days came to an end, Mack became a High School basketball coach from 1993-1999. Mack then hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater Xavier under coach Skip Prosser. He would then follow Prosser to Wake Forest University until 2004.

Mack would then return to Xavier as the top assistant under Sean Miller. After Miller left to become the head coach at the University of Arizona, Mack became the head coach. Xavier continued its winning ways under Chris Mack, reaching the Sweet 16 three times and one Elite Eight appearance.

Chris Mack joins Skip Prosser, Thad Matta, and Sean Miller to use Xavier as a stepping stone school. Prosser moved onto Wake Forest, Miller to Arizona, and Matta to Ohio St.

Bobby Roode and Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal and Rusev

Tonight’s show starts off with “Glorious” Bobby Roode making his entrance to the ring. “The Viper” Randy Orton is out next. Both men wait in the ring for their opponents.

“The Modern Day Maharaja” Jinder Mahal announces that his partner Samil Singh is injured, so instead Mahal will team up with a lion…”The Bulgarian Brute” Rusev. The crowd chants “Rusev Day” before the match begins.

“Glorious” Bobby Roode starts off this match against Jinder Mahal. Roode and Mahal lock up, but Mahal gains the advantage with an elbow to Roode’s head. Mahal stomps out “The Glorious One” into the corner, but Roode counters and fights off Mahal. Roode and Mahal are back-and-forth with big moves. Roode comes off the top rope and squashes Mahal. Randy Orton takes out Samil Singh at ringside, which distracts Roode before the commercial break.

We’re back from the break. Both Orton and Roode take turns punishing Rusev. Both men drop “The Bulgarian Brute” who desperately wants to make his way to the corner to tag in Mahal. Orton beats Rusev down into the corner as the referee forces him to back off. Rusev takes advantage of the referee’s distraction by hitting Orton with a big kick. Rusev goes for the pin, but Orton kicks out.

Rusev tags in Mahal who relentlessly smacks and embeds his knee into Orton. Mahal picks up Orton who fights back, but “The Modern Day Maharaja” quickly regains control. Rusev gets the tag and continues to dominant Orton. Mahal is tagged back into the match and attempts to wear down “The Viper” who fights out and tags in Bobby Roode.

Roode comes in like a great ball of fire, leveling both Mahal and Rusev (at ringside). Roode ascends the top rope and levels Mahal. Roode attempts The Glorious DDT, but Mahal breaks free. Roode turns that around into a spinebuster and a pin. 1..2…Rusev breaks up the pin-fall. Roode is able to knock Rusev out of the ring, but turns around into a big kick from Mahal.

Mahal and Rusev continue the punishment on Bobby Roode. Rusev gets in the tag and picks apart Roode while Orton can only watch on at ringside. Mahal gets in the tag and continues to wear down Roode. “The Glorious One” tries fighting back, but is quickly knocked back down to the mat by “The Modern Day Maharaja.”

Rusev is tagged back in and brutally stomps on Roode. Rusev picks up Roode and then slams him back to the mat. Mahal gets the tag and continues to wear down Roode who eventually fights out and tags in Orton.

Randy Orton comes in like a bolt of lightning. He takes out both Rusev and Jinder Mahal. Orton is about to set Rusev up for an RKO, but Roode falls on top of Orton because of Mahal. Roode knocks Mahal over the top rope, but turns around to an angry Orton who RKO’s Roode. Orton turns around to a Machka Kick from Rusev, and it’s lights out.

Rusev and Jinder Mahal defeat Randy Orton and Bobby Roode

Rusev Has Bad News For Jinder Mahal

Jinder Mahal and Samil Singh look very pleased with the results of the tag team match. They run into Aiden English and Rusev, promising that they’ll invite them to the championship celebration after WrestleMania. But Rusev has other plans. Since he beat WWE U.S. Champion Randy Orton, now he’s going to go into Daniel Bryan’s office to turn the triple threat U.S. title match into a fatal four way, involving “The Bulgarian Brute” Rusev. Mahal and Singh look very upset.

Shinsuke Nakamura Asks AJ Styles For Help

Nakamura is worried about tonight’s main event match against Shelton Benjamin with Chad Gable at ringside. He asks AJ Styles to accompany him for his match, to even the odds.

Becky Lynch vs. Ruby Riott

Lynch and Riott have a very back-and-forth competitive match. Riott is ruthless and fearless going up against “The Irish Lass Kicker.” Ruby taunts and then drops Becky. But Becky turns the tide and has her reeling outside the ring. Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan provide a quick distraction, which Riott capitalizes on, dropping Lynch to the outside.

The fight returns to the ring with plenty of back-and-forth action. Becky Lynch is kicking arse, hitting a clothesline and a dropkick. Fans are getting behind “The Irish Lass Kicker.” Lynch drops Riott and then ascends the top rope. Morgan and Logan distract Lynch, allowing Riott to send her opponent face-first into the turnbuckle. Ruby goes for the pin, but the referee catches her feet on the rope.

Ruby attempts a Riott Kick, but Becky blocks. Riott goes for the Disarm-Her, but Liv Morgan pops up on the ring apron. This doesn’t work out well for The Riott Squad. Lynch is still able to roll-up Riott for the win.

Becky Lynch defeats Ruby Riott

Post-Match: Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan attempt to attack Becky Lynch, but “The Irish Lass Kicker” turns the tide and knocks them both out of the ring.

Daniel Bryan Has An Announcement To Make

WWE SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan cuts a promo, reflecting on the news last week of finally being able to be medically-cleared for in-ring competition. Bryan also mentions the firing of Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn last week. He says that he’ll give them one more chance at WrestleMania. If Shane McMahon is able to compete, then it will be Bryan and McMahon vs. Owens and Zayn at WM 34.

Daniel Bryan is all worked up. He tears off his shirt, revealing a new “YES!” T-shirt. He says he’s tired of all the board meetings and the dress suits. It’s time for Daniel Bryan to return to the ring where he belongs! He’s ready to fight Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Bryan says he’s ready to kick their ass!

The New Day vs. The Bludgeon Brothers

Kofi Kingston hits a dropkick on Erick Rowan before the match begins. The New Day puts the punishment on The Bludgeon Brothers for the early portion of the match. However, Rowan turns the tide and wears down Woods.

Rowan takes out Big E at ringside. And Harper runs and crushes a bewildered Woods into the corner of the ring. Rowan brings out the hammer to finish off The New Day, but The Usos run down to ringside and the referee calls for the bell.

The Bludgeon Brothers defeat The New Day via disqualification

Post-Match: The Usos and New Day clear the ring of The Bludgeon Brothers. But the brothers come back swinging with hammers and empty the ring of both teams.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Tyler Breeze

Fandango gyrates on the ring apron, mimicking Ziggler, which only distracts Tyler Breeze. Ziggler dominates much of this match, which is more of a comedy segment than a battle. Ziggler chases both Breeze and Fandango outside the ring. Fandango continues to run laps around the ring even while Ziggler and Breeze are fighting in the ring.

Ziggler ends this comedic affair with a Zig-Zag on Breeze.

Dolph Ziggler defeats Tyler Breeze

Post-Match: Ziggler admires the Andre the Giant trophy and then kicks Fandango in the face.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Shelton Benjamin

Both Nakamura and Benjamin lock up. Meanwhile, the crowd chants for “AJ Styles,” who is standing around at ringside. Nakamura gains the early advantage and sends Benjamin out of the ring as we go to the commercial break.
