President Donald Trump will be holding his first State of the Union Address this Tuesday, January 30th at 9 pm EST. U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy III and Virginia Delegate Elizabeth Guzmán will be giving the Democratic Party’s response in English and Spanish respectively.

The address will supposedly cover five major policy issues: the economy, infrastructure, immigration, trade, and national security. More specifically, Trump is expected to tout the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and echo his campaign call for “fair” and “reciprocal” trade deals. The president gave a slight preview of what we can expect in this statement below:

A fraternity at San Diego State University was allegedly allowed to remain on campus for six years despite numerous violations.

According to The Daily Aztec, the student newspaper at San Diego State University, the university’s Phi Kappa Theta had a six-year history of violations before the university finally decided to expel them.

The report from the Daily Aztec states that Phi Kappa Theta was finally expelled in September after an incident involving apparent underage drinking.

Emails obtained via a California Public Records Act request also show both the university and the fraternity’s national office moved to prevent information about the chapter’s expulsion from being released to the public. After the fraternity’s expulsion, emails show administrators moved to shield Phi Kappa Theta’s policy violations from the public eye.

When The Daily Aztec inquired about the specific reasons for Phi Kappa Theta’s removal, Caryl Montero-Adams, the assistant director of Student Life and Leadership for Greek life, told an SDSU media relations officer in an email that in the past, officials “have communicated the founded policy violations (ex. alcohol) without disclosing the specifics related to the incidents. That said, I believe that any specifics given would need to be discussed and approved with (Dean of Students Randy Timm and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Christy Samarkos).”

The specifics were ultimately not provided to The Daily Aztec until a California Public Records Act request was submitted.

The national Phi Kappa Theta organization did not return requests from the Daily Aztec for details on why the fraternity’s charter was revoked.

Super Bowl 52 Preview

The Eagles have been underdogs in every game this postseason despite being home for both games. They were underdogs against Falcons and the Vikings, and both fell to the stingy defense and back up QB Nick Foles. Neither of those teams is the Patriots, and neither stage was the Super Bowl, so you have to throw out all the previous games. The last time a backup quarterback took over as late in the season as Foles did you have to go all the way back too 1990 when Jeff Hostetler led the New York Giants to a Super Bowl after Phil Simms went down with an injury.

Nick Foles is coming off the best game of his career since he tossed seven touchdowns in a game under Chip Kelley. Against the Vikings, Foles threw for 358 yards, three touchdowns and 0 interceptions, one of those touchdowns was an absolute dime off a flea flicker. If Foles can play at this level again (which I doubt) and their front four on defense can pressure Brady then the Eagles have a real shot at winning this game.

The Patriots, on the other hand, come in after a thrilling come from behind victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. In that game, TB12 found Danny Amendola not once but twice including an acrobatic toe-tapper in the back of the end zone with just over a minute left in the game to take the lead. Brady lit up the #1 passing defense in the league for 290 yards and two touchdowns, so he should be able to have even more success against a much weaker Eagles secondary. The biggest question for me is who the Patriots running backs will do against the #1 Rush defense in the NFL. If the Patriots can move the ball methodically and turn their redone chances into touchdowns and not settle for field goals, they should win this game handily. Just remember don’t ever bet against Belichick and Brady.

Virginia Tech freshman student Yunsong Zhao has been charged with illegal gun possession.

According to Virginia Tech spokesman Mark Owczarski, Zhao is accused of possessing a rifle, a weapon that Virginia law says foreign nationals cannot possess and trying to order 5,000 rounds of ammunition.

Investigators say that the VA Tech freshman purchased an AR-15 assault rifle and then checked the assault rifle into the student gun locker at the Virginia Tech Public Safety Building. Furthermore, according to the warrants, Zhao also checked out a Bushmaster XM 15 assault rifle.

According to the warrants, on January 22, police received reports Zhao purchased a PMAG rifle with a 30-round magazine. The ammunition is illegal under Zhao’s VISA status.

Detectives also observed Zhao shooting a .223 caliber weapon with a 30-round magazine at Jefferson National Forest’s firing range.

Police searched Zhao’s dorm in Cochrane Hall and his 2011 Crown Victoria sedan, according to arrest warrants.

Zhao is currently being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bail.

The Virginia Tech Chief of Police released a full statement about Zhao’s arrest on Facebook:

“Earlier today, VTPD received information about a rumor that “someone on campus” had been “stockpiling weapons” and the students “should avoid large lecture classes”. Understandably, others hearing this were deeply concerned, too. VTPD immediately investigated but have found no evidence this rumor is accurate. However, we will continue to be vigilant for our community.

We always encourage members of our community to contact us anytime there is a concern about safety, security and/or suspected violation of the law on campus. All of us at Virginia Tech are fully committed to keeping our campus and satellite facilities as safe and secure as possible. Rest assured that if VTPD possesses any information indicating an impending or immediate threat to campus, we will take the necessary steps to alert our community.

Today, following a lengthy investigation, VTPD served an arrest warrant on a student for a firearms violation. Hence, we obtained an arrest warrant for that student and took him into custody earlier today without incident. It is quite possible this case sparked the rumor from earlier today.

As always, we greatly appreciate the vigilance of not only our campus community but of all of Hokie nation. We work very closely with all departments across campus as well as our law enforcement colleagues in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Montgomery County as well as the state and federal authorities. Zhao’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 1. He faces up to 5 years in prison if convicted.

The Phi Delta Theta fraternity chapter at Missouri State University has been closed until
Fall 2021 due to a rules violation. The suspension has displaced 26 students living at the fraternity house on Elm St. The decision was made by the national Phi Delta Theta organization

Dr. Thomas Lane, the Dean of Students at Missouri State University, says that while he does not know why the organization closed the chapter, the university supports the decision.

The fraternity’s national headquarters released a statement saying, “This came after a discovery of violations of the fraternity’s risk management policies. Phi Delta Theta looks forward to its return to Missouri State University in the Fall of 2021.”

According to KSPR, Missouri State had disciplined the Phi Delta Theta chapter five times since 2012 for various offenses.

The chapter was put on two separate year-long probations for hazing violations in April 2014 and December 2016. The group just cleared their most recent probation on December 15, 2017.

“I think that the university takes a strong stand against hazing,” Thomas Lane said. “I think we do a good job of educating all of our student organizations about the importance of not hazing and that hazing is not congruent with the values that we have as an institution.”

Dr. Lane says that the university has made the 26 students who live at the fraternity house aware of their on-campus housing options. He also says that it’s still possible that the school may discipline some students, but they won’t pursue any group charges against the fraternity since, “in essence, the chapter no longer exists.”

This is the latest fraternity suspension in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities.

In a move that sent shock waves around the NFL, the Washington Redskins came out of nowhere to trade for Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith. The trade of Alex Smith wasn’t shocking as the Chiefs made it clear that they were going to turn the reigns over to last year’s first-round pick Pat Mahomes. Washington acquired Smith for a 3rd round pick and CB Kendall Fuller, but not only did Washington trade for a new QB instead of resigning Kirk Cousins to a long-term deal they gave Smith an extension of 4 years which will pay him an annual average of $23.5 million with $71 million guaranteed. This is a massive slap in the face to Cousins who’s played the last two seasons on the franchise tag and was even willing to do a third season. The Redskins must’ve seen something in Cousins’ game that they didn’t like, but there are plenty of teams that could use a QB like Cousins. So where would the best landing spots for this talented 29-year-old?

The Minnesota Vikings

I’ve told my theory of Kirk to the Vikings to a bunch of my friends, and they told me I was crazy that no way they’d sign him. But why not? The Vikings made it to the NFC Championship with Case Keenum who then showed his flaws when they had to go to Philly, A place Kirk has played once a year for his whole career by the way. The Vikings have the interesting spot of having three free agent QB’s, Sam Bradford, Case Keenum, and Teddy Bridgewater, so are you going to tell me any of those three are better than Kirk? The Vikings are a QB away from being one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl. My question to everyone doubting this move, would you rather pay Cousins who’s been able to play almost every game of his career? orrrrr pay two of the three guys when you have Sam Bradford who tears something every time the wind blows, Teddy (who I think is great) but is still working back from that massive knee injury, or Keenum who’s been a journeyman QB his whole life and is most likely just lightning in a bottle. I think plugging in Cousins and getting back Dalvin Cook to go along with all their weapons and that elite defense makes them an instant top three favorites to win the Super Bowl.

New York Jets

The New York Jets finished 5-11 last year, and the sad part is that was overachieving for a team I honestly thought was going to win two games last year. Josh McCown was a surprise last year with how well he played, but the Jets went down this road two years ago with Ryan Fitzmagic, and that blew up in their face so I think they might move on from the journeymen QB’s that had one good season. This is where the decision comes in, do the Jets who have a solid running game, decent receivers, a below average O-line, and a pretty solid defense go after a proven vet like Cousins and then draft their needs or do they draft a QB like Baker Mayfield at pick #6 and sign players to fill in their holes? The answer to that I don’t even know (I know shocking) but if they decide on a vet, Kirk will be their guy.

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns got robbed of another chance to claim their ‘franchise’ QB when the Chiefs dealt Alex Smith to the Redskins over the Browns who were also in trade negotiations with the Chiefs. So now the Browns are sitting there and looking at a team that won zero games last year and a rookie QB who showed signs of ability but hasn’t quite put it all together yet. So why not sign Cousins and sit Kizor behind him and try and win now with Josh Gordon, Corey Coleman, Duke Johnson Jr. and use those first rounders to sure up the defense and the O-line and maybe even be competitive this year. Cousins has also said in the past that he would welcome the challenge and would like to be the guy to bring the Browns out of the dumpster (I paraphrased of course).

Arizona Cardinals

Arizona just lost their starting QB Carson Palmer this offseason as he’s decided to hang them up and retire. On the other hand the ageless wonder Larry Fitzgerald is coming back and looking to win now. New Head Coach Steve Wilks might want to draft a young QB aka “his guy” but for a team with David Johnson returning and a top-level defense making a move on Cousins could propel them into the playoffs and possibly further. This is another team to keep your eye on.

Outside Shots

Denver Broncos: A lot of people on my twitter are saying oh this has John Elway written all over it, and if this were last year I’d agree. But for a team whose defense is n the downswing after releasing TJ Ward midseason and now shopping Aqib Talib I just don’t know if it makes sense to pay a QB all that money if you’re not going to put a winning product around him. I also wouldn’t be shocked if they threw the money at him though typical Elway move.

Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars have said they are committed to Blake Bortles for the 2018 season which makes a lot of sense after he played his best game of his career in the AFC Championship game in Foxboro, that is no minor feat. That statement was also released before Kirk was a free agent. The issue is if you look at Blake as a whole he kind of sucks, and the Jags have the defense and the running game to win a Super Bowl right now, and in my honest opinion, Kirk would bring them there.

Soccer is exploding in America, and even though the United States Men’s National Soccer Team won’t be participating in the 2018 World Cup, interest in the tournament is still expected to be huge amongst Americans, many of which will be tuning into the World Cup for the first time.

According to a 2018 Gallup poll about United States spectator sports, soccer has increased in popularity over the last four years. In the poll,  7% of U.S. adults said that soccer was their favorite sport, up 3% from the last time the poll was taken. At 7%, soccer just barely trailed baseball (9%), but was above hockey (4%).  Most notably, though, is that of all the sports in the poll, soccer is the only one that grew, as football dropped by 2%, basketball dropped 1%, and baseball dropped 5%, meaning it’s the only sport in the country to be actively growing in popularity.

While the USMNT not qualifying for the world cup was certainly a blow to the popularity of soccer in America, club soccer, particularly the Premier League and the Champions League, are as popular as ever in the United States.

Kirk Daniel Cousins was born on August 19, 1988, to his parents, Maryann and Don Cousins, a senior pastor at Discovery Church in Orlando, Florida. College Years

Cousins was redshirted in 2007 which was his true freshman year, In 2008, he spent the season as the backup quarterback to future NFL QB Brian Hoyer. Kirk got limited playing time passing for a total of 310 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. In 2009, he won the starting quarterback job, a job he didn’t plan on relinquishing any time soon. He led Michigan State to a 6–7 record that season, throwing for 19 touchdowns, nine interceptions and 2,680 passing yards in 13 games. In 2010, he took a huge step forward. He led Michigan State to an 11–2 record and a share of the Big Ten Championship. Kirk was crushing it at Michigan St, but still, everyone continued to sleep on him. In 2011, his Michigan State Spartans went 11-3 and played in the first-ever Big Ten championship game. Cousins was named Second Team All-Big Ten by the coaches, and played his final game as a Michigan State Spartan on January 2, 2012, defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in the Outback Bowl. On top of all of that Cousins was also awarded the 2011 Lowes’s Senior CLASS Award. Kirk enjoyed a very winning career at Michigan St. but now it was time to enter the NFL Draft and continue his football career.

NFL Life

In 2012, Kirk was drafted #102 by the Washington Redskins becoming the second QB they had taken in the draft. In that same draft, the Redskins took Robert Griffin III (RGIII) second overall, this instantly became another obstacle for Cousins. Cousins rookie contract was for four years for a total of $2,572,688. Kirk rode the bench for most of the season as RGIII was tearing up the league, unfortunately, the league wasn’t the only thing RGIII was tearing up. During the Wildcard round of the playoffs that year Griffin took a shot to his already damaged knee that tore his LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament). The Redskins lost the game and their franchise guy of so they thought. Following that season the Redskins hired Jay Gruden to come in and coach the team, and everything started to change. Over the next two seasons, Griffin was in and out of the lineup, and Kirk would replace him and consistently played well completing 60%+ of his passes. Eventually, Gruden had seen enough and Cousins was given the nod to be the starting QB in 2015. Kirk didn’t let his chance slip away, he completed a league-high 69.8% of his passes, threw for over 4,000 yards, with 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Following that season Kirk was a restricted free agent, and instead of offering the young QB a long-term deal the Redskins decided to franchise tag him. So they got Kirk for one year $19,953,000, and he went out and balled again. He threw for 4,911 yards, completed 67% of his passes and threw for 25 TD’s. Following another terrific season, Kirk was once again a restricted free agent. The Redskins apparently offered Cousins a 5-year contract worth upwards of a $100 million dollars, but Kirk turned it down knowing he was worth more. So again he played under the franchise tag, one year $23,943,600.

Currently, Kirk is a free agent and will not be resigning with the Redskins, so this leaves all the other teams with a chance to double maybe even triple his net worth. It will be interesting to see what unfolds.

French authorities have deployed a fleet of helicopters and boats off the coast of southwest France to search for Pierre Agnes, the chief executive officer of sporting company Boardriders Inc. – the parent of the Quiksilver, Roxy, and DC Shoes brands. Agnes has been missing since Tuesday morning and the search party sent to find him was formed after his empty boat was found washed ashore the French Atlantic beach town of Capbreton.

What Happened?

Agnes set out aboard his 36-foot boat on a routine fishing trip on Tuesday morning from Capbreton, the surf resort town in southwestern France in which he lives with his wife and children. The coast of Capbreton is known for it’s intense and often dangerous waves that are prized by surfers. According to Agence France-Press, after Agnes left the harbor he told authorities that because of fog, he would return later than he’d initially planned.

The CEO of Boardriders is still missing, and things took a turn for the worse later on Tuesday when his boat was discovered run aground and empty on a beach 15 miles south of Capbreton. Shortly after, four vessels and four helicopters were sent out in search of Agnes. The local coast guard suspended the search on Tuesday night and resumed the operation Wednesday morning. Now, family, friends, and an entire surf community are waiting to hear more news.

“The Boardriders family and entire surfing world are devastated by this news,” the company said in a statement Tuesday. “We are concentrating on working with the local authorities on the search and rescue effort and supporting Pierre’s family.”

Who is Pierre Agnes?

Pierre Agnes (54) is the CEO of Quiksilver, now Boardriders, a surf culture company that was founded in Australia more than 40 years ago. In 2003, he served as Managing Director of Quiksilver Europe and eventually worked his way up to the position of CEO, which he’s held since 2015. As CEO, he’s responsible for overseeing all aspects of Quiksilver’s operations, finance, sales and marketing organizations in their respective territories. Agnes recently oversaw a deal that brought Quiksilver together with fellow surfwear brand Billabong under the Boardriders umbrella.

His disappearance has caused great anguish in the surfing world.

“I love this man,” Kelly Slater, an 11-time World Surf League champion, said in an Instagram post.

“I’m praying for a miracle but it’s just starting to hit me what a profound effect this man had on my life and the surf community at large,” wrote Slater, who used to be sponsored by Quiksilver.

In a statement, the World Surf League noted the “deeply concerning reports” about Agnes’ disappearance.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family all at this time, as well as the search and rescue teams,” it said.

The Early Years: 1990’s-2000’s

Smith was born in Bremerton Washington but was raised in La Mesa, California where he attended Helix Charter High school. Just this season, he set career heights in passing yards (4,042), touchdowns (26) and passer rating (104.7). Former NBA forward Rasual Butler and his wife Leah LaBelle, a former contestant on American Idol, were killed in a single-car accident in California on Wednesday, January 31.

Butler reportedly lost control of his Range Rover around 2 AM, hitting a parking meter before slamming into a wall. The car flipped, killing him and LaBelle.

Officers believe Butler was speeding at the time of the accident.

Ex-NBA player Rasual Butler and his wife — a singer who appeared on “American Idol” — were both killed in a single car crash in Studio City, CA early Wednesday morning, TMZ Sports has learned.

38-year-old Butler — who was drafted by the Miami Heat in 2002 — lost control of his Range Rover around 2 AM, struck a parking meter and slammed into a wall. The car flipped. Officers believe the car was speeding before it lost control.

Butler had a long NBA career after an impressive run at La Salle — where he was a 2-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 Player. He’s a member of the La Salle Hall of Athletics.

Butler played college basketball at La Salle University. He was drafted in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft, playing 14 seasons in the NBA with the Miami Heat, New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs.

In an effort to aid undocumented students accepted to UCLA, the college’s student government has announced the allocation of $100,000 towards its’ Undocumented Student’s Program. The goal of the funds is aimed at the retention rate for undocumented students at the California University. The announcement comes at a time where the reality of DACA has been threatened by the Trump administration and the future for so many undocumented students pursuing degrees in the U.S. remains unclear.

According to the program’s website, the Undocumented Students Program at UCLA “supports undocumented students by providing caring, personalized services and resources that enable students to reach their highest potential. Through a variety of programs, workshops, and partnerships with students, campus allies, and community stakeholders, USP strives to support all members of the UndocuBruin community.”

In March 2017, more than 1,3000 students and teachers at the university signed a petition to effectively turn UCLA into a sanctuary campus as a defense to the goals of the Trump administration. And even earlier, in 2013, the student government chose the ban the use of the term “illegal immigrant” to describe undocumented students, calling it a derogatory and racist term.

According to the campus news source, The Daily Bruin, the funds are coming from a surplus in student life fees discovered by an accounting error. The error meant that the student government now has access to three years worth of neglected funds, and unanimously voted to allocate $100,000 of the $149,000 sum towards the Undocumented Student’s Program.

In a letter to the editor of the Daily Bruin on January 25th, students stated:

“The council’s unanimous vote is significant because it showcases the importance of student voices in enacting change through student government. Like many other students across the country, we have felt compelled to support our community members in the wake of President Donald Trump’s repeal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Our effort to better fund USP was necessary to address challenges many of our friends and classmates face because of the Trump administration’s immigration decisions.”

Students are now calling on UCLA’s administration to follow student leaders’ example and put their money where their mouth is when it comes to issues facing undocumented students.

On Super Bowl Sunda, from 3 PM to midnight, Staten Islanders will be able to
get one free ride from Uber by using the promo code “SAFERIDESI.” The offer will cover up to $15 for rides that start and end in Staten Island. According to reports, there are approximately 500 available codes.

Nearly 3,000 Staten Islanders participated in the partnership’s first campaign, which offered free rides the day before Thanksgiving.

“The businesses that are located in those towns called back and said they got tremendous feedback,” said Anthony Rapacciuolo, executive director of the South Shore Business Improvement District. “People would — not that we promote them drinking more – but let’s say spend more money because they knew that they would be safe.”

Oddo and McMahon were involved with a similar initiative back in 2003 called “Operation Arrive Alive.” That program didn’t have any underwriting, instead relying on working with bars so that bartenders would call cabs for customers who requested one.

According to CNN, a reporter from Fox News, Diana Falzone, filed a story about an alleged sexual relationship between Clifford and Trump in October 2016.

Reports indicate that Falzone had an on-the-record statement from Clifford’s manager, Gina Rodriguez, confirming that Clifford and Trump had engaged in a sexual relationship.

Falzone is a reporter for Fox News who frequently covers celebrity news and issues related to sexual harassment. She filed a lawsuit against the network in May 2017 alleging gender discrimination. Fox News has denied her allegations and the case is ongoing.

In a statement, Noah Kotch, who became editor-in-chief and vice president of Fox News digital in 2017, said, “Like many other outlets, we were working to report the story of Stephanie Clifford’s account in October 2016 about then-Presidential candidate Donald Trump and a possible payment by Trump lawyer Michael Cohen. In doing our due diligence, we were unable to verify all of the facts and publish a story.”

A Fox News spokesperson did not immediately respond to an inquiry about why the outlet did not use any of its previous reporting in its recent stories on the alleged relationship between Clifford and Trump.

Keith Davidson, an attorney for Daniels, told CNN he was “unaware his client or Rodriguez had spoken to media outlets about a possible story.”

In an article published by Slate,  Daniels reportedly told Slate writer Jacob Weisberg that she had “gone to Trump’s hotel room after meeting him at a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada in 2006” and began a sexual relationship, which continued for nearly a year.
