The Nobel Prize has been a defining measure of significant breakthroughs and accomplishments in the fields of science, academia, and culture ever since the first awards were handed out in 1901. In the 116 years that these prizes have been awarded to those who have demonstrated excellence in their fields, 881 individuals and 23 organizations have received Nobel Prizes (each prize can have up to three winners). This week, the governing bodies that oversee the awarding of these coveted prizes make their announcements of the laureates who will join the legacy of the winners who have come before them, trailblazers of their industries. Here we’ll cover who the winners of the Nobel prizes for 2017 are, and the work for which they won the prize.

A Brief History of the Nobel Prizes

Alfred Nobel, Founder of the Nobel Prizes

Swedish engineer and inventor Alfred Nobel (b. 1833 – d. 1896) amassed a considerable fortune during his life, mostly on the back of his hundreds of patents – including most notably the patent for dynamite. Nobel’s primary business was in the development and manufacturing of armaments and explosives, with other patents of his, ballistite and cordite, becoming modern replacements for more traditional gunpowder. The fortune that these inventions brought him also brought with them a degree of public scorn for the perceived detriment his inventions brought to the world.

In 1888, Nobel was reading a French newspaper and was shocked to find his own premature obituary, entitled “The Merchant of Death is Dead”. The obituary was erroneously reporting Alfred Nobel’s brother Ludvig’s death, though the obituary did a number on Alfred, shaking him to his core and encouraging him to think about the legacy he would leave behind after he passed. It was this obituary that prompted him to draft a new will, in which he laid out the plans he had in mind for his fortune; to create a series of prizes to award to those who contributed the “greatest benefit to mankind” in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace.

Nobel left behind the staggering majority of his accumulated wealth to establish these five prizes, roughly $186 million. The executors of Nobel’s will founded the Nobel Foundation to care for the fortune as well as organize the awarding of the prizes. Additionally, the will established that a Norwegian Nobel Committee would be responsible for handling the Nobel Peace Prize.

Other institutions were picked or established to oversee the remaining prizes: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel; the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; the Swedish Academy awards the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Laureates: Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was the first award announced this year on October 2, 2017, with the recipients receiving the award jointly “for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm”.

In layman’s terms, effectively what these men have discovered is tangible evidence of a gene that controls the body’s daily biological rhythms. Most people will have heard about our circadian rhythms; how our bodies are internally aware of the natural rhythms of day-to-day cycles. It’s how your body knows to sleep at night and wake in the morning. It is also the same reason why we experience jet-lag when traveling across time zones; our internal clocks and our external environments are misaligned, and so our bodies have to play catch-up to restore normalcy to our rhythms.

Now, these researchers have uncovered a little more about how exactly this works on a biological level, from experiments and observation of fruit flies’ genetics and seeing how the same principles apply to other multicellular organisms, i.e. people.

Laureates: Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish, Kip S. Thorne

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in two halves; the first half to Rainer Weiss and the second half awarded jointly to Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne. These gentlemen were awarded the prize because of their work in observing gravitational waves, something predicted over 100 years ago by Albert Einstein (another Nobel Laureate in Physics). Gravitational waves have long been a theory in experimental physics, though only recently have scientists been able to develop the kind of technology necessary to observe the phenomenon.

These three scientists are integral members of LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). Rainer Weiss has worked since the mid-1970s on trying to observe gravitational waves in the universe, and together with his fellow laureates and the other 1000 members of LIGO, they have finally achieved something even Einstein believed would be impossible; measuring gravitational waves caused by a collision between two black holes.

This discovery is a groundbreaking advance for the field of physics, giving scientists a new means of measuring and unraveling the mysteries of the universe. This is still a very new science, but the ability to detect and observe these gravitational waves means that new doors are opening for researchers to further understand the most complex of cosmic events.

Laureates: Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank, Richard Henderson

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to these three chemists for their development of cryo-electron microscopy in order to yield high-resolution images of biomolecules. Effectively, these researchers have expanded greatly on the capabilities of the electron microscope by determining a way to freeze biomolecules during mid-movement, allowing electron microscopes to detect and view molecular processes that were previously unseen.

Now, researchers can create far more accurate three-dimensional images of biomolecules. In the past few years, scientific literature has been able to use high-resolution images of things like the surface of the Zika virus and in-depth looks at proteins that cause antibiotic resistance in bacteria. The benefits that this method of observation has for the field of biochemistry is staggering because researchers now have far more detail afforded to the ways they observe material on a molecular level.

This can lead to greater understandings of how things like viruses and bacteria form and defend against pharmaceutical threats like antibiotics and other medicines, and will allow researchers to better engineer ways to combat some of the more deady diseases we encounter.

Penn State University has suspended one of the school’s Delta Tau Delta chapter after a drinking incident left one student hospitalized.

According to PSU spokeswoman Lisa Powers, the Office of Student council is investigating Delta Tau Delta’s possible involvement in the hospitalization. The chapter has been placed on interim suspension while the school conducts its investigation.

On September 28, State College police say they found an unidentified 18-year-old male student unconscious on a university street. The Office of Student Conduct is also investigating if the minor student was supplied alcohol at Delta Tau Delta and if that led to his condition.

via State College:

State College police found the student, an 18-year old male, unconscious on Calder Way on Thursday, Sept. 28. No other information on the student’s identity or specific injuries have been released, but Powers said that he is currently in recovery.

“The potential involvement of Delta Tau Delta is very disturbing news, given all of the recent efforts and education that have gone into emphasizing student safety,” said Damon Sims, Vice President of Student Affairs. “None of us can be tolerant of organizations or individuals who value access to alcohol above student welfare. We’ll see where our investigation of this incident leads.”

In addition to the fraternity, the Office of Student Conduct is currently investigating whether individual students furnished alcohol to minors that contributed to the student’s injuries and condition.

This incident comes at a tumultuous time at Penn State, as all Pennsylvania State University fraternities are under a social ban following the tragic death of student Timothy Piazza of New Jersey, who fell down the stairs at Beta Theta Pi in February after an alcohol-related hazing ritual.

Powers says the unnamed student is currently recovering.

MLB Standings 2017: Top 10 Postseason Teams

baseball, MLB, playoffs

The regular 2017 MLB season has finish, and the 10-team playoff field is set to begin. For your entertainment, we are going to take a look into where all 10 teams currently stack up. Postseason outlook, wild-card game disadvantage and final-month performance are all being looked at, according to The Bleacher Report.

Minnesota Twins (1/10)

Wins/Loss: 85-77
Division Status: No. 2 AL Wild Card

The Minnesota Twins are going to be the first team in MLB history to reach playoff after immediately following a 100-loss campaign. They were also able to outlast a deep wild-card field for most of the season. Already underscored back in September, in a three game series, this team already faces an uphill battle. However, as manager Paul Molitor said in a statement with reporters, according to Twins Baseball, “In a game scenario, anything can go down.”

Colorado Rockies (2/10)

Wins/Loss: 87-75
Division Status: No. 2 NL Wild Card

The Colorado Rockies are in the postseason games for the first time since 2009, and their pitching staff is credited with their rise, notably Jon Gray. As manager Bud Black told The Denver Post, “Jon’s in a good spot because he is throwing the ball well…When you are confident in how you are playing, that always lends itself to feeling good about where you are.”

New York Yankees (3/10)

Wins/Loss: 91-71
Division Status: No. 1 AL Wild Card

Finishing just two games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East standings, the New York Yankees got the No. 1 AL wild-card spot. “It’s been an unbelievable season,” said manager Joe Girardi to the New York Daily News. The team is also expected to have a top-tier starter in Masahiro Tanaka.

Arizona Diamondbacks (4/10)

Wins/Loss: 93-69

Division Status: No. 1 NL Wild Card

The Arizona Diamondbacks finished better than the NL Central champion, the Chicago Cubs, but finished 11 games behind the Ls Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Similar to above, the team’s starting pitching depth is hoped to give it an advantage this season.

Boston Red Sox (5/10)

Wins/Loss: 93-69
Division Status: AL East Champs

Once again, anything can happen. The Boston Red Sox may not have given what was expected since the offseason trade for Chris Sale, but the addition of Addison Reed is seen as a step in the right direction. Still, a lack of starting rotation stability might be a cause for concern.

Los Angeles Dodgers (6/10)

Wins/Loss: 104-58
Division Status: NL West Champs

The Los Angeles Dodgers might have been a showcase of what happens when you peak too early or show any decline, after coming close to breaking the 116 winning record. Then again, this is still a team that won 104 games; it might have something up its sleeve.

Chicago Cubs (7/10)

Wins/Loss: 92-70
Division Status: NL Central Champs

Trends might not be on the side of the cubs. Back in April, Jay Jaffe of Sports Illustrated,  “In truth, recent history has been unkind to World Series winners. None has repeated as champions since the 1999 Yankees won again in 2000, and in that span, only two other winners—the 2000 Yankees and 2008 Phillies—even returned to the Fall Classic the following year. Just seven out of 16 made the playoffs at all.” That said, a strong final month might help this team at the end, or at least show they’re in good standing.

Washington Nationals (8/10)

Wins/Loss: 97-65

Division Status: NL East Champs

For now, this team seems like it already has the complete package. Even Bryce Harper is back from the disabled list at the right time: the playoffs! As ESPN’s Eddie Matz explained, Harper’s knee might make or break things, saying, “But after Harper went down — missing 42 games with a hyperextended left knee — Washington’s offensive output plummeted by 25 percent (from 5.4 runs per game to 4.1), a testament to just how valuable the former MVP really is. What’s crazy is, despite the drastic drop-off in offense, the Nats still went 26-16 without Harper, a testament to just how good their pitching has been.”

Houston Astros (9/10)

Wins/Loss: 101-61
Division Status: AL West Champs

Getting Justin Verlander just might have put this Houston team in good standing.”He continues to evolve as a pitcher and then closes his outing out as strong as he can be with some high-end stuff” manager A.J. Hinch said to MLB. Added to that, George Springer and Jose Altuve can make the Astros hard to beat.

Cleveland Indians (10/10)

Wins/Loss: 102-60
Division Status: AL Central Champs

Since August, they have only lost four games. Do I need to say more?

Jenny Parks was a kindergarten teacher in her mid ’30s, who was one of 59 people killed in the deadliest shooting in United States history. She’s a resident of Lancaster, California, who attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival concert with her husband Bobby. She was also the mother of two children, named Bryce and Leah.

The shooting occurred on Sunday at around 10 P.M. when suspected mass shooter 64-year-old Stephan Paddock opened fire from his room on the 32nd floor of a Mandalay Bay hotel, across the street from the concert. He fired down upon the crowd below, causing 59 deaths and 527 injuries. Authorities are still investigating the motive in the shooting, and are still clueless as to why someone who commit such a murderous act.

Who Was Jenny Parks?

Jenny Parks worked as a kindergarten teacher for the Westside Union School District, ABC7 reports. She is survived by her parents, her brothers, her husband, Bobby, and her two boys. Her son Bryce just started high school, while her daughter Leah is in elementary school.

Jenny was “absolutely beautiful and very intelligent, had a wonderful sense of humor and was so kind,” Bobby’s uncle, Dr. Steven McCarthy, told People Magazine.

McCarthy said that Jenny just got her Master’s in Education this May. He also told People Magazine that Jenny and her husband were high school sweethearts, and she was planning a surprise party for his 40th birthday next week.

“We are a very resilient family and everybody will bond together,” McCarthy told People. “But this will be very hard for him. It’s a major loss.”

Bobby required surgery for his injuries he suffered during the shooting.

Alex Mahany, a Las Vegas bartender, reported meeting Parks before the festival. He wrote about the experience on Facebook and felt blessed to have known her.

“This was the last thing I received from a friend I met at the festival,” he wrote in a caption with a photo. “Her name was Jenny Parks. A kindergarten teacher from California. She is survived by her two kids, husband, two brothers and parents. In the 3 days she hung at my bar she had a bright personality and always had a smile on her face. I feel grateful and blessed someone could come into my life for even for a short period and graze me with her presence. Rest easy Jenny.”

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help assist Parks family, especially her husband and two children. In two days, her page has earned almost $50k.

ESPN Has Signed Katie Nolan, Making The World A Better Place

Katie Nolan is the definition of “girl you take home to Mom”

She’s gorgeous, smart, funny, rich (probably — hello ESPN money) talented and into sports. She seems like the type of chick who actually knows how to shotgun a beer, will laugh at a good fart joke, and probably has a better fantasy football team than you.

All of this is a long way of saying that Katie Nolan is the complete package, and that complete package is now free of Fox Sports 1 and is headed over the mothership over on ESPN.

After her legitimately hilarious Garbage Time was canceled by the idiots over at Fox Sports, Nolan wallowed away under contract and under-utilized at the JV ESPN. But with her contract expiring at the end of the year, Nolan was granted an early release for FS1 and was immediately signed by ESPN.

If ESPN is smart, they’ll give Nolan a prominent role across its properties, as well as her own show, whether it be on television or radio (our vote is television, considering she’s a 10/10).

Either way, Katie Nolan being back in the sports journalism world, and hopefully in front of a camera,f is a win for all sports fans, as she’s truly one of the brightest talents in the industry.

So congrats, Katie. We missed ya.

Blade Runner 2049 Reviews: Must-See Ratings From Top Critics & Websites

Blade Runner 2049 rating

(Source: YouTube/Warner Bros. Pictures)

Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner,  tells the story of a young “blade runner,” sort of a futuristic bounty hunter who is assigned to “retire” adroids called “Replicants,” searching for a former blade runner Rick Deckard, the protagonist of the original film, who had been missing for thirty years. Of course, one mystery from the original film presses through the sequel…is Deckard really a Replicant himself gone rouge, the very thing he once hunted?

BBC wants to answer the big question first and foremost: does it live up to the original?

“Denis Villeneuve’s shrewdly calculated sequel, Blade Runner 2049, tries hard to evade that tricky problem, with a busy, distracting surface that cloaks an enduring theme about humanity…The sequel borrows the golden-yellow palette for some scenes. Overall, cinematographer Roger Deakins and production designer Dennis Gassner create a grim, ashy-grey world. Villeneuve shot a great deal on sets and locations in Hungary. The film may not be heavy with CGI, but it looks as though it is. That’s not a bad way to depict a blighted future, but the design is never as engaging as the gloriously rich original.”

The New Yorker makes it clear that this Ridley Scott remake is a Villeneuve film

“Despite all the overlaps, this is not a simulacrum of a Ridley Scott film. It is unmistakably a Denis Villeneuve film, inviting us to tumble, tense with anticipation, into his doomy clutches. “Prisoners” (2013) was as welcoming as a dungeon, and, in “Blade Runner 2049,” the light is no longer, as Nabokov had it, “dreadfully distinct / Against the dark,” for the darkness has overcome it. San Diego is a waste dump, and Las Vegas lurks in a tangerine dream of radioactive smog. And yet, within the gloom, what miracles unfold. Brace yourself for the delivery of a new replicant, not born as a baby but slithering out from a plastic sheath as an instant adult, slimy with fabricated vernix and quaking at the shock of being alive. Suddenly, the lofty questions that swarm around artificial intelligence—Could the feelings familiar to mankind abound within the man-made? Could an operating system grow a soul?—reach a breathtaking consummation, and become flesh.”

The Guardian suggested that this could be the start of obscure sci-fi films getting a second chance at the cinema

“Given the glacial pace of Blade Runner’s development, it is also tempting to wonder how many other sci-fi bombs that have been languishing for years in relative ignominy might yet find traction in the not-so-distant future. The story of the futuristic noir’s slow rise to the cultural pinnacle suggests it can sometimes take a generation for studios to accept that opinion has changed; that there is suddenly a demand for fresh stories set in the same universe.”

IGN was interested in the original’s ‘Riddle of the Ages’: Is Deckard a ‘Replicant’ himself?

“It’s a question almost as old as the movie itself — is Blade Runner’s Rick Deckard actually a Replicant? Is the hunter also that which he hunts? The true nature of the Harrison Ford character has been shrouded in ambiguity for decades, a fact complicated by the multiple cuts of the 1982 classic film, the various, often contradictory quotes from the people who made the movie (including director Ridley Scott and Ford himself), and of course the very mindset of Blade Runner, which operates in that middle ground between mystery and revelation.”

CNN suggests that less is sometimes more with an ambitious film

“The movie, however, perhaps tackles too much, incorporating clever callbacks to its cinematic predecessor while seeking to carve out its own expansive narrative. The pacing, too, is somewhat off, with the first two thirds of the film — which runs 2 hours, 44 minutes — feeling a tad too leisurely, as if luxuriating in its futuristic dystopia, before rushing toward its slightly messy climactic act.”

CNET suggested that the film did its job in spite of any glitches

“Like the original “Blade Runner”, the sequel has its flaws. The original began with a human who we began to slowly doubt, giving rise to the age-old debate about whether Deckard was an android. By contrast the sequel makes clear from the start which of the major characters are replicants, and the experience suffers for that. In the first film you couldn’t help but sympathise just a little with the replicants even though they were killers, because they were raging against the limitations cruelly imposed on them by their capricious creators. In the world of the sequel, replicants freely wander the Earth with no worries about aging or death…Ultimately, though, this gobsmacking vision is just so beguiling I can’t help wanting to immerse myself inside it, flaws and all”
