Pete Buttigieg has more momentum than any other candidate in the Democratic presidential race. The South Bend, Indiana mayor has been surging in recent polls and has found himself in the top-tier in early primary states alongside former Vice President Joe Biden and Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, but his rise hasn’t stopped there.
On Tuesday, November 12, the latest Monmouth University poll was released and it was none other than the 37-year-old Buttigieg who has become the new front-runner among potential Democratic voters in the Iowa caucus.
Buttigieg leaped a whopping 14-points since the last Monmouth poll in August and now leads his political foes with 22 percent support among likely Democratic Iowa caucusgoers.
Biden sits in second-place with 19 percent support, while Elizabeth Warren checks in with 18 percent support. The only other candidate to register double-digits in the Monmouth poll is Bernie Sanders at 13 percent.
“Buttigieg is emerging as a top pick for a wide variety of Iowa Democrats,” Patrick Murray, the director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said about Buttigieg’s surge, via The Hill. “While he has made nominally bigger gains among older caucusgoers, you really can’t pigeonhole his support to one particular group. He is doing well with voters regardless of education or ideology.”
If Buttigieg can keep his momentum going, we could see him emerge not only as an early state front-runner but as the candidate to beat in the Democratic field.
