Teachers are changing the stereotypes for our generation, and Sammy Rigaud is among the best of them. Those of us who are Millennials and Generation Z are often criticized for being lazy or blamed for ruining every industry that came before us. But what the dinosaurs can’t take away from all of us is that our generations are responsible for some of the greatest teachers in the planet.
Most of us can remember the days where we sat at our desks struggling to stay awake while some gray-haired teacher slowly read through a textbook, but we like to get up and move.
We like to make things fun; make things exciting.
So thank the lord for Sammy Rigaud, a teacher from Atlanta, Georgia who was introduced to the masses thanks to a viral video he shared from his Facebook Live feed.
Mr. Rigaud shared a video from his classroom that shows off a reward for his students. If the students in Mr. Rigaud’s class receive an 80 percent or better on their weekly assignments, they get to kick back and drop some bars in class every week with “Freestyle Fridays.”
The weekly reward allows students to loosen up, have some fun, and gives them the opportunity to show off their individuality as they freestyle for their peers. And if we’re being honest, some of the kids have some serious bars.
As the video began going viral, Atlanta-based rapper 6lack chimed in on the video and said he wanted to stop by the class after seeing their skills.
“They all went crazy but my last boi in his bag i’m pullin up,” 6lack said on Twitter.
Mr. Rigaud also noted that this is not a new thing for his students. While the video was picking up steam on social media, he shared a video in the thread that showed his class from last year in a music video featuring some of their own freestyles.
We need more educators like this in the world. Well done, Mr. Rigaud.
