Jessi Combs, known as the “Fastest Woman on Four Wheels”, is dead at age 36. According to reports, Combs was killed in a “horrific accident” while attempting to break her own land speed record in a jet-powered vehicle. The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon Alvord Desert in southeast Oregon, according to KTVZ.
The news of Combs’ death was confirmed by team member Terry Madden.
“So I don’t know how to say any of this but it all needs said. I have never loved or been loved by anyone as much as this amazing woman Jessi Combs. She was truly my unicorn and I enjoyed every single minute that I had with her,” Madden wrote on Instagram. “She was the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know. Unfortunately, we lost her yesterday in a horrific accident, I was the first one there and trust me we did everything humanly possible to save her!
“Love you all and thank you all for being such amazing friends to her, she dedicated her life to helping support others dreams and I promise I will continue that.”
Her death is being investigated by the sheriff’s office and Bureau of Land Management.
Combs set the land speed record in 2013 with a speed of 398 mph. She set the record with a jet-powered North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger, according to Road and Track.
She had also hit a speed of 483 mph in 2018 but failed to qualify for a title because of mechanical issues. Along with her career in racing, Combs was a television personality with appearances on Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters.
Our deepest condolences go out to Combs’ family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
