Warner Bros. has released the final trailer for the upcoming Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. The iconic DC Comics villain takes center stage in the dark, twisted adaptation directed by Todd Philips. It is a completely original story of the Joker which has not previously been published by DC Comics — which has led to speculation that the film could face some backlash.
“We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about,” Phillips during a previous interview with Empire magazine. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”
Phoenix plays the role of failed stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck.
After his failed career leaves Fleck — who appears on the talk show of Murray Franklin, played by Robert De Niro — he is pushed to the edge of insanity. That is when Fleck takes his dark turn.
The trailer is set to Stephen Sondheim’s “Send In the Clowns.”
In addition to Phoenix in the titular role, Joker also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Shea Whigham, and others.
Joker will be released in theaters on Friday, October 4, 2019, in the United States, although showings will begin on the evening of Thursday, October 3.
