Considering how long it’s been since the last one was released — A Dance with Dragons came out in 2011 — it’s probably been safer to assume that the next A Song of Ice and Fire novel was more likely not to be released.
George R.R. Martin, the now 70-year-old author of Game Of Thrones, has clearly hit some sort of writer’s block. Plus, he’s not exactly a model of health, the clock is certainly ticking when it comes to his ability to create, especially considering he has not one but TWO books to write, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
Well, as he has done many times throughout the years since A Dance with Dragons, Martin released a statement on the progress of the books, as well as other Game Of Thrones-related projects in the pipeline, such as HBO’s spin-off show, which is reportedly called The Long Night.

“I know you want WINDS, and I am going to give it to you… but I am delighted that you stayed with me for this one as well. Your patience and unflagging support means the world to me. Me, I am back in my fortress of solitude, and back in Westeros. It won’t be tomorrow, and it won’t be next week, but you will get the end of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.
Meanwhile, you have the final season of GAME OF THRONES coming, and the new show that is not yet officially called THE LONG NIGHT being cast, and a couple more shows still being scripted… and a few other cool things.”
Game Of Thrones highly-anticipated eighth and final season will premiere in April 2019. However, the exact release date has yet to be announced at this time.
As for The Long Night, the pilot is reportedly filming around February 2019 with a premiere date set for 2020.
