The nominations for the 89th annual Academy Awards were released today to recognize the best in film of 2016. Fun little fact about me, I’m a huge award season guy, specifically the Oscars. Yes, the Golden Globes and SAG Awards are nice and all, but everyone knows it’s all about the Oscars, and anyone that tells you otherwise is a chump.

With today’s release of the nominations, I’m going to take a dive into predicting who the winners will be in some of the major categories. I apologize to anyone who is a fan of Visual Effects, Sound Editing, Live Action Short, or Makeup and Hairstyle, but I’m not guessing who’s winning your category, because frankly, I don’t really care, although that’s not to say it’s still not a great achievement winning an Academy Award in one of those categories.

I made predictions for the Golden Globes before that show and did pretty well going six for eight with my picks, so as you’d imagine I’m probably going to nail all of these picks. Here are your Oscar winners.

Best Picture

• Arrival

• Hell or High Water

• La La Land (Winner)
• Lion
• Manchester by the Sea
• Moonlight

I would love to see Manchester by the Sea win here, but the smart money is to take La La Land. After it went seven for seven at the Golden Globes, I finally forced myself to go see it, and I was not disappointed. The movie got 14 nominations, and I see it taking home the big prize of the night. If the movie wasn’t to win, I could also see Moonlight or the aforementioned Manchester by the Sea winning the award.

Best Director

• Denis Villeneuve, Arrival
• Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge
• Damien Chazelle, La La Land (Winner)
• Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
• Barry Jenkins, Moonlight

The year of La La Land continues with Damien Chazelle taking home the prize for Best Director, and he’s more than worthy of the award. He did a great job directing the film, and if he does win the award, he’ll be the youngest winner ever of the award at the ripe age of 32. The only other nominee that I think could take down Chazelle would be Barry Jenkins, but even then I think it’s an outside shot.

Best Actor

• Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea (Winner)
• Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
• Ryan Gosling, La La Land
• Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
• Denzel Washington, Fences

I have a huge man crush on Ryan Gosling and I don’t care who knows it. I thought he was great in La La Land, but this award is without a doubt going to Casey Affleck, and there isn’t anyone more worthy than him. He gave one of the best performances I’ve seen in quite some time in Manchester by the Sea, and it would be an absolute crime if he doesn’t go home with the Oscar. Have to give a shoutout to my man Denzel, because he was awesome in Fences.

Best Actress

• Isabelle Huppert, Elle
• Ruth Negga, Loving
• Natalie Portman, Jackie
• Emma Stone, La La Land (Winner)
• Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins

This is the one category I don’t feel that strongly about. I do think that Stone should take home the Oscar here because I thought she was great in La La Land, but it would not shock me if Isabelle Huppert or Natalie Portman also walked away as winners. I’m sticking with Stone, but we’ll see what happens

Best Supporting Actor

• Mahershala Ali, Moonlight (Winner)
• Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water
• Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea
• Dev Patel, Lion
• Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals

I was happy to see Lucas Hedges get nominated because I thought he was excellent in Manchester by the Sea, and as much as I’d love to see him win, I feel fairly confident that Mahershala Ali is going to win the award, and rightfully so. He was terrific in Moonlight and was robbed of the Golden Globe in this category.

Best Supporting Actress

• Viola Davis, Fences (Winner)
• Naomie Harris, Moonlight
• Nicole Kidman, Lion
• Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
• Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea

As worthy as Davis is of winning this category, it’s kind of bullshit because she should be in the Best Actress category. That’s not to take anything away from her performance because it was outstanding, but she pretty much has the same amount of screen time has her co-star Denzel Washington, in Fences, and he’s in the Best Actor category. And you know what the crazy part is? Davis would probably win for Best Actress if she was in that category. Regardless, she deserves an Oscar for a great performance.

Best Original Screenplay

• Taylor Sheridan, Hell or High Water
• Damien Chazelle, La La Land (Winner)
• Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou, The Lobster
• Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
• Mike Mills, 20th Century Women

La La Land continues its dominance, as does Chazelle. He’ll probably win his second Oscar of the night here (or first depending on which category gets announced first at the show). I’d really like to see Lonergan win this award because La La Land is just hogging all the Oscars at this point, but look for Chazelle to be the winner.

Best Adapted Screenplay

• Eric Heisserer, Arrival
• August Wilson, Fences
• Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi, Hidden Figures
• Luke Davis, Lion
• Barry Jenkins with story by Tarell Alvin McCranley, Moonlight (Winner)

A category I feel fairly confident about. As worth as Jenkins is for the Best Director Award, that’s probably going to go to Chazelle, so I see him getting awarded for the screenplay he wrote for Moonlight, but he’s more than worthy of the award. Moonlight is a fantastic movie, and is very deserving of multiple Oscars, this being one of them.

Best Animated Feature

• Kubo and the Two Strings
• Moana
• My Life as a Zucchini 
• The Red Turtle
• Zootopia (Winner)

To be honest, I don’t feel great about this category either, but Zootopia won the Golden Globe for the same category and that usually translates to an Oscar win. I very well could be wrong, but I’m sticking to my guns on this one.

Best Song

• “Audition (The Fools Who Dream),” La La Land 
• “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” Trolls
• “City of Stars,” La La Land (Winner)
• “The Empty Chair,” Jim: The James Foley Story 
• “How Far I’ll Go,” Moana

It’s going to go to one of the two songs in this category from La La Land, but I guess I’ll go with “City of Stars.” I, along with the rest of the world probably, would love to see “Can’t Stop the Feeling” win the award, because that would mean everyone’s favorite heartthrob Justin Timberlake wins an Oscar, but as it is with almost every award of the night, La La Land takes home another Oscar here.

Talk about a criminal name. We’ve heard of Billy the Kid. We’ve heard of The Sundance Kid. But Mystery Dildo Bandit? That tops them all. That right there is the greatest moniker/pseudonym/rap name/whatever the hell you want to call it of all time.

Canadian adult entertainment outlet Our Pleasure alleged on Facebook on that a man stole items from its store on Topsail Road in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

In the video they published to Facebook, an unidentified man deemed the ‘mystery dildo bandit’ man grabs two items from the store’s wall display and sneaks them into his jacket.

“If you recognize this man, please private message us,” the store wrote. “Your name will be left unknown, of course.”

The search did not last long, as the suspect was identified just one day later.

I’m not entirely sure what the street value of a dildo is, but I have to imagine there are more lucrative options out there. If you’re going to get in trouble for stealing something, it’s gotta be more valuable than a dildo.

Is Stephen Colbert as funny as he was when he did The Colbert Report? No, of course not. But that’s not his fault. The Colbert Report was one of the funniest television shows to ever exist, and Colbert simply can’t get away with making the same jokes he did on Comedy Central.

Regardless, Stephen Colbert is an American national treasure, so any time he does basically anything, it’s worth watching, especially when it’s running around the streets of the city terrorizing New Yorkers.

The Late Show‘s Stephen Colbert appeared on the season finale of Billy On The Street to quiz “real” New Yorkers or, as they call them, “elitist New York pieces of sh*t,” on what they think of President Donald Trump. Given the fact that ol’ Hilldog won 79% of the city’s vote, it’s safe to assume almost everyone is a Hillary supporter.

That’s right people: Not only has America finally brought down El Chapo, but we’re housing him in what’s described as being equivalent to hell. America, f*ck yeah.

Joaquin Guzman, infamously known as El Chapo, is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. The downtown Manhattan jail housing notorious Mexican drug lord has been described by an inmate as having worse conditions than Guantanamo Bay, according to a declassified report.

Via New York Daily News:

Escaping the rust-colored MCC, however, will prove hard for Guzman, who’s most likely being held in the jail’s infamous 10 South wing — a high-security section housing the most dangerous inmates in complete solitary confinement.

Ahmed Ghailani, a Tanzanian native serving a life sentence for his role in bombing two American embassies in East Africa in 1998, told a psychiatrist that he found the Guantanamo Bay detention camp “more pleasant” and “more relaxed” than the MCC, according to a forensic evaluation report obtained by the Daily News.

Guzman is being arraigned on a laundry list of murder and drug trafficking charges in Brooklyn Federal court on this Friday afternoon.

The Sinaloa cartel kingpin and druglord arrived on United States soil after being extradited from Mexico, where he had successfully escaped not one, but two high-security prisons.

“While (at Guantanamo), he was able to recreate with others, to access DVD’s and in general felt that the atmosphere provided more freedom to detainees,” Virginia University psychiatry professor Gregory Saathoff wrote in the report, which was based on several long conversations with Ghailani in 2010.

While at the MCC, however, Ghailani complained that he was never allowed to interact with other inmates, with the only human interaction being frequent strip searches performed by guards.

Ghailani, who spent over two years at the MCC, said he found the civil legal process in the U.S. “more fair” than the military justice system of Guantanamo Bay. The MCC, which opened in 1975, is located between the Church of St. Andrew and the Manhattan Federal courthouse. This isn’t the first time the MCC has housed notorious criminals, as Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, who led the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, and Bernard Madoff, who pulled off the largest financial fraud in U.S. history, were both kept at the MCC before.

David Patton, one of Guzman’s legal representatives, told the New York Times that the MCC’s solitary confinement units are “horrifying and inhumane.”

If you wanted to intentionally design a place to drive people mad, you’d be hard pressed to do better,” Patton, the executive director of Federal Defenders of New York, told the newspaper. “The fluorescent lights are always on…The only sound is the occasional clanking of metal when doors are opened and closed.”

It’s safe to say that despite his prison-escape prowess, El Chapo won’t be busting out of the Metropolitan Correctional Center anytime soon.

Tom Hardy’s new FX series Taboo premiered earlier this month and continues tonight at 10:00 P.M. Google Pixel C

The Google Pixel C is an amazing tablet. Massively huge resolution packed into its 10.2-inch screen with a Nvidia 64-bit processor and 3GB of RAM to back it up makes it a stand out amongst other tablets of the same price. It is the perfect size no matter where you are engaging with the device. The optional keyboard (sold separately) is a great addition and, while small in size to match the Pixel C’s profile, functions well. The Google tablet also has industry-leading battery life with over 11-hours while web browsing. One of the only downsides (as much as I hate to admit it) is that its Android operating system gets later access to many of the apps that iPad users would get sooner.

iPad Pro 9.7-inch

Without question, Apple’s best tablet. With nearly all the power of the 12.9-inch model, this appropriately sized device will be doing all the same processes with a much more comfortable weight. The iPad Pro features the same great 12-meapixel camera as the iPhone 6, however with that great camera comes the dreaded camera bump that protrudes from the otherwise flawless design. Seeing how most people do not usually have cases on their tablets, that bump is a real concern. The iPad is, of course, compatible with the $99 Apple Pencil so you will find yourself doodling and jotting notes until your Farmville cows come home.

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S

The Galaxy TabPro S is the only tablet on this list to feature a 12-inch OLED screen. The crisp blacks are a must-have for users who watch movies on their devices, especially when viewing videos in low light. This Samsung tablet is a Windows 10 device and boasts a proper Intel chipset, a step up from the previous Galaxy tablet entry which had a proprietary Samsung chip. The TabPro S also ships with 128 GB SSD and a keyboard that doubles as a protective case. This is a particularly important selling point because most other tablet hybrids require the keyboard to be purchased separately. The TabPro S’s keyboard also has a trackpad, which gives it a leg up on the iPad, as Apple’s product does not support mice.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

This is, without question, the closest a tablet has ever come to having the same functionality as a proper laptop or PC. Running on a full version of Windows 10, the Surface Pro 4 can load any software that a regular PC can run. This means you can load up that copy of Photoshop and edit on the go or use any Windows-only, work-related programs whenever and wherever you want. This tablet can also be purchased with up to 16GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. The Pro 4’s keyboard (sold separately) even has a trackpad, so when it is on your desk, you never have to touch the screen. Its massive 12.3-inch screen will mean you are never squinting, even when you have multiple windows open and its nine-hour battery life is pretty good considering the size of this bad-boy. The real kicker is the addition of extra USB ports as well as a separate charging port, something incredibly hard to come by with tablets. The only real drawback for the Surface Pro 4 is actually its size. While the huge screen is great on a desk coupled with its keyboard, in your hands it is just a bit too big for extended use. With that small caveat aside, the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is an incredible device.

Lee O’Denat, the CEO of WorldStar, died in his sleep Monday night. An autopsy of the man, also known as Q, is scheduled for later today, although one source tells TMZ that he died of a heart attack.

O’Denat founded the premiere hip hop website in 2005 when he started posting mixtapes, which gradually progressed into a mash-up of hip-hop videos, fight clips, and other outrageous camera footage.

Founding the company at the age of 33, Lee “Q” O‘Denat was a Hollis, Queens-based hip-hop fan and Grover Cleveland High School dropout. Described by Vibe as a “remnant of the Geocities generation,” the site regularly features public fighting caught on video, music videos, and assorted content targeted to young, black audiences. O’Denat himself referred to the site as the “CNN of the ghetto.”

In 2012, Alexa Internet stated, “Compared with all Internet users, its users are disproportionately people and they tend to be childless, moderately educated men 18–21 who browse from school and work.”

Of course, World Star is now synonymous with fight videos, as many times those recording the videos will shout ‘World Star!’ themselves while recording.

It’s Tuesday, January is almost over and you’ve already given up on your New Year’s resolution, and it’s cold outside. Nothing seems to be going your way, right? Wrong (well, if you’re a sports fan)! Tonight we get an awesome matchup on the hardwood between two Big 12 powerhouses, as the #2 Kansas Jayhawks head up to Morgantown to boogie with the #18 West Virginia Mountaineers.

Since losing their first game of the season against Indiana, the Jayhawks have ripped off 18 straight wins, shown no signs of slowing down, and look like National Title contenders. Kansas is led by their stellar backcourt of senior Frank Mason III and freshman Josh Jackson, both of whom are leading the team in scoring. They’re 16th in the nation in scoring with 85.4 points a game, most of which are coming from the 17 assists they average a game, which is the 12th best in the country. For the Jayhawks, they can’t look past WVU tonight at their big Saturday matchup against #4 Kentucky, but the oddsmakers have them as four-point underdogs tonight, and that’s probably because they think the team is more focused on Saturday. It will be interesting to see how they play tonight in a hostile road environment.

After upsetting then #1 Baylor, the Mountaineers followed that up by squeaking by unranked Texas 74-72 in their next game, then proceeded to lose their last two games in a row. I won’t say this is a must-win game for WVU because at 15-4 they’re in prime position to make the tournament, but losing three games in a row is never good for a team’s psyche, and it could be bad for them going forward. Fortunately for West Virginia, they get to play in front of their home crowd tonight, which they really seem to feed off of, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they pulled out a W tonight. To get the victory, WVU will have to continue to play the tough defense that they’ve played all season against a high-powered Kansas offense, and also put up big points like they did during their eight-game winning streak earlier this year. A good old fashion Big 12 showdown, gotta love it.

Full disclosure: I gave up on The Leftovers halfway through the first season. It’s not that it wasn’t a good show. Like just about everything on HBO, it was objectively good television. It was just the darkest, most depressing world imaginable, and I just couldn’t bring myself to go back there week after week. I watch television to escape the problems of the real world for a little while, and The Leftovers was just a barrage of misery without even a speckle of hope.

With that being said, I do wonder if I should have just stuck it out. Because usually when I give up on a show it’s because it doesn’t resonate with me. But that wasn’t the case with The Leftovers. If anything it was affecting me too much. While I didn’t enjoy watching it, it certainly achieved the objective of any art, which is to make us feel things. Plus the show supposedly hit its stride in the second season.

Anyway, today HBO released a “first look” trailer for the third and final season. And from the looks of it, it’s still not all rainbows and unicorns. But if you’ve made it this far, you’ll be glad to know “THE END IS NEAR”. The final season begins on April 16th.

Kerry O’Grady, a senior U.S. Secret Service, is in hot water over some Facebook posts about President Trump during the past seven months, including one in which she said she wouldn’t want to “take a bullet” for him.

O’Grady, a special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Denver district, oversees coordination with Washington-based advance teams for all presidential candidate and presidential trips to the area, including all upcoming or future trips by the president, vice president or Trump administration officials.

In one particular Facebook post, O’Grady endorsed Hillary Clinton, while also saying she would sooner endure “jail time” rather than “taking a bullet”. She considered Trump’s election a “disaster” for America. However, the post didn’t mention Trump by name, specifically. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General, which investigates agency complaints of misbehavior, received a complaint about O’Grady’s Facebook posts on October 11, a source told The Examiner.

Despite her senior security role, she has made her disdain for Trump and his incoming administration clear to her Facebook followers, who included current and former Secret Service agents and other people who were employees at the time of the posts. O’Grady’s posts triggered at least one complaint to the office that oversees investigations into Secret Service misbehavior, two knowledgeable sources told the Washington Examiner.

O’Grady also mentioned the Hatch Act in this Facebook post. The Hatch Act, which was enacted in 1939, bars executive branch staff, except the president, vice president and some other senior executive officials, from engaging in certain political activities.

“As a public servant for nearly 23 years, I struggle not to violate the Hatch Act. So I keep quiet and skirt the median. To do otherwise can be a criminal offense for those in my position. Despite the fact that I am expected to take a bullet for both sides.

But this world has changed and I have changed. And I would take jail time over a bullet or an endorsement for what I believe to be disaster to this country and the strong and amazing women and minorities who reside here. Hatch Act be damned. I am with Her,” O’Grady wrote in the now-deleted Facebook post.

The U.S. Secret Service responded to the Washington Examiner, saying “The USSS is aware of the postings and we are looking into the matter.” It’s unclear if Secret Service allows agents and other employees from engaging in political speech on social media.

O’Grady stressed in her interview that she would in no way shirk her duties to protect the president because of her opposition to Trump’s candidacy and support for Clinton. In response to whether her expression of her opposition to Trump would affect her ability to do her job, O’Grady said:

“I hope you understand that’s an emphatic no and I need to make sure that’s resoundingly clear and just reinforces that this job needs to done well.”

The circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death of Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura are becoming murkier by the day. According to Fox Sports, Ventura’s $20 million fortune depends on whether he was drunk when he fatally crashed his car in the Dominican Republic – as reports claim he was robbed as he lay dying by the road.

The Kansas City Royals pitcher, who was just 25, was killed in a horrific car crash on a highway in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday. ESPN reported Ventura was driving a car that struck a house between San Francisco de Macoris and Pimentel, about 95 miles north of Santo Domingo.

Local media say the 25-year-old was found alive beside the car wreckage but people robbed him and then left him to die. Ventura’s World Series ring, other valuable items and cash were reportedly stripped from him.

Furthermore, in a series of tweets sent out Monday night, Hall of Famer pitcher Pedro Martinez demanded an investigation on the matter:

“How outrageous to know that a life like Yordano’s could have been saved had it not been looted in the way they looted him,” said the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

He continued that he would be embarrassed of his country if the robbery report was confirmed.

“Now it is more painful to know that Yordano remained alive after the accident and instead of someone to help him, they robbed him and let him die. I hope an investigation will be carried out, because if there is any specific evidence of this, I would feel a great deal of shame for my country.” (translated with Google Translate)

As Forx Sports reports, if Yordano’s death is ruled an accident, his contract stands and any remaining money owed will go to his estate.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said the toxicology reports will not be ready for about three weeks. Moore said Dominican Republic authorities had told him there was no alcohol found at the crash scene. Authorities have not determined what caused the accident but suspect speeding.

The funeral for Ventura was held on Tuesday, January 25 in the Dominican Republic. Kansas City Royals teammates  Alcides Escobar, Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer and Sal Perez served as pallbearers.

Over the first couple weeks of 2017, I feel like I have written more Kylie Jenner articles then I did in my previous time here combined.
