In last night’s battle between ferocious hawks, the Iowa Hawkeyes prevailed 84-73 over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Even though the score wasn’t close, the final seconds of the game provided some drama. Down 11 points with roughly three seconds left, North Dakota stole the ball from Iowa and attempted a buzzer beater. The shot didn’t even count, but I guess the principle was enough to piss off Iowa coach Fran McCaffery.

Jesus Christ, who gives a shit? It’s not like Iowa was across half court and dribbling the clock out. They were practically right under their own basket, and they were virtually begging North Dakota to try to get a cheap bucket as time expired. Fire out an outlet pass and push the ball up the court, and you won’t have to worry about stuff like this happening.

If you want to put on your tin foil hat and bust out some conspiracy theories, the spread in this game was 11 points. I can’t imagine the adrenaline those final few seconds provided for gamblers.

Shaun Wade, a five-star Ohio State University commit, was just named USA Today’s Defensive Player of the Year. The cornerback/wide receiver played for Trinity Christian in Jacksonville, FL and helped to get the team their fourth consecutive State Championship.

As you can tell in the video below, Shaun is a two-way stud. On offense, he makes plays from the backfield and lined up as wide receiver. And on defense? You better hope that your high school QB throws the ball on a dime otherwise it’s getting batted or picked off. Shaun recorded a total of 63 tackles and 7 interceptions during the 2016 season.

The Buckeyes are going to need that kind of production from their pass defense considering that both of their starting cornerbacks might be leaving after this season.

James Gertie might be the first person in the past twenty years to be suing McDonald’s for a reason that I agree with. Gertie is suing two McDonalds franchise stores, owned by Karis Management Co. Inc, for consumer fraud and deceptive practices after he did the math and learned that the “extra value meal,” which contains two cheeseburgers, medium french fries, and a drink, is actually more expensive than ordering them all individually. It’s only a difference of 41 cents, but still–we can all agree that’s baloney.

Here’s what Gertie is saying about Karis Management’s practices:

The reason that I am doing this is not about the 41 cents, it’s because of the principle.

A value meal is supposed to be a cheaper price. That’s the whole point of a ‘value’ meal.

I believe in the principle of true advertising. If a company advertises something to be a value, then that is what it should be [source].

Gertie is hoping that a judge will grant a class-action lawsuit status to the case. That would allow all customers at the Karis’ McDonald’s restaurants in Grayslake, Des Plaines, Prospect Heights, Round Lake Beach, Park Ridge, Glenview, Niles, Volo and Antioch to receive payments for damages.

There’s a lot that can be said of some of the dumber lawsuits against companies like McDonalds, but this isn’t one of them. A group of fast food franchise owners who 100% understand that they’re marking up an “extra value meal”–something they know will be ordered more often–is definitely worthy of a lawsuit.

For those that pay close attention, the 2017 NFL Draft is expected to be rather thin on adequate quarterbacks come this April. Even Heisman Trophy winner DeShaun Watson has taken his fair share of criticism in the ability to translate at the next level. That’s one of many reasons the focus of scouts has shifted to junior UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky, according to MMQB’s Emily Kaplan. Trubisky is finishing his first full season as the Tar Heels quarterback, which will conclude at the Sun Bowl December 30 against Stanford in El Paso, Texas. The ball will then be in Trubisky’s court, for he’ll have to decide whether to return for his senior season or head to the NFL when his stock may never be higher.

Mitch Trubisky Statistics

Like most aspiring Ohio football players, Trubisky wanted to play at Ohio State and wear the Scarlet and Gray. However after learning that J.T. Barrett would be attending Ohio State, Trubisky shifted his attention elsewhere despite receiving an offer from the Buckeyes. Michigan State also offered him, but after visiting Chapel Hill Trubisky was sold. He wanted to be a Tar Heel.

2014

After redshirting as a freshman, Trubisky came into the 2014 offseason prepared to battle the elder Marquise Williams. Williams would win the competition but Trubisky still appeared in ten games, throwing 42 completions on 78 passes for 459 yards. That was good enough for four touchdowns but also four interceptions. Nonetheless, head coach Larry Fedora got a glimpse of what was to come from the young quarterback.

2015

Trubisky would have a similar sophomore campaign, sitting behind Williams but appearing sporadically throughout the season. He showed drastic improvement in completing passes (40 of 47) and passing yards (555) and touchdowns (six). He added additional scores as a rusher finding the end zone three times on the ground. With a 31% increase in completion rate and Williams set to move on after the season, the Tar Heel program rested easily knowing Trubisky could handle the duties full time.

2016

Appearing in three more games than his first two seasons (nine), Trubisky unremarkably shot passed all his season-highs in statistical categories. He completed 281 passes in 408 attempts and posted 3,468 yards. He threw 28 touchdowns to just four interceptions, yielding great praise for his ability to get the ball out quickly. While the Tar Heels regressed to 8-4 after an 11-3 season in 2015, Trubisky proved enough to NFL scouts that he is worthy of being in the discussion of the first quarterback taken in Philadelphia next April.

NFL Draft

While Trubisky has yet to announce his intentions regarding the draft, him and his family have said they will sit down after the team’s bowl game and make a decision then. That timeframe is short, as underclassmen must declare by January 16 or deem they are returning to school for another season. While criticism of Trubisky includes a small sample size of just one full season, coaches like his high school’s Steve Trivisonno and UNC offensive coordinator Blake Anderson, have lauded their signal caller for his leadership and dedication outside the team facilities. While that may be coach-speak and something heard every draft season, Trubisky might benefit from it due to a bare quarterback class.

As a Phi Delta Theta fraternity member, I’m fraternally obligated to publish any and all PDT college party videos on our site, but I have to say that this one from SMU would be getting written up regardless. Honestly, “Aspen in the 80’s” is a theme that you can’t go wrong with: hot chicks in hot pink, fake ski gear, and fake snow because… well you get the point.

Truthfully I’m not a big fan of the whole “fraternity party outside of the house and in another venue” move, but sometimes you just need a bigger space. And judging from the size of this crowd, there’s no way that they’d fit into anything else than the FSU PIKE house.

On Tuesday December 20, 2016, the NFL announced their 2017 NFL Pro Bowl Rosters. These players were not only recognized by fans, but also amongst players and coaches for all the hard work and amazing play they have put into this season. Tom Brady earned his 12th career Pro Bowl, which is the most amongst active players.The Oakland Raiders led the way with seven Pro Bowl selections as they have been one of the league’s most offensively talented team with Derek Carr throwing behind a dominant offensive line. While the majority of college football fans will be miss “Uncle Verne,” or Verne Lundquist, next college football season on CBS, they and the station are getting a well-decorated replacement in Brad Nessler. It was announced earlier this year on May 31 that Nessler would takeover over for Lundquist, beginning with a handful of games in the 2016 season before full-time status in 2017 as the lead play-by-play man. It’s not the first rodeo between CBS and Nessler, as he previously worked for the network from 1990-91. With several stops between then and now, Nessler has extended experience in football and basketball at both of the higher levels.

Career History

Football

Nessler comes from the ESPN where his duties included NCAA football and men’s basketball. He began at the network in 1992 doing primarily basketball play-by-play until his role expanded in 1997 with ABC Sports football duties. He worked in the shadows of legendary broadcaster Keith Jackson the first few seasons, but in 1999 Jackson scaled back exclusively to West Coast games carving out a larger role for Nessler. From 2006-08 he was the lead caller for the Saturday afternoon contests before taking over primetime duties in 2009 in the 7:45 P.M. EST slot. During this time he worked with some talented sportscasters including his future CBS colleague Gary Danielson. This also included color commentators Bob Griese and Todd Blackledge and sideline reporter Erin Andrews.

In 2011, Nessler was hired by the NFL Network to call Thursday Night Football with Mike Mayock and continued to through the 2013 season before the rights were sold to CBS in 2014.

He had a few cameos with ESPN’s Monday Night Football, specifically from 2009-11 during the annual NFL week 1 doubleheaders. In those years Nessler teamed with Trent Dilfer, Ron Jaworski and Suzy Kobler during those telecasts.

In his earliest years, Nessler had a six year run in Atlanta calling the NFL Falcons as the lead radio man from 1982-88 before assuming the same role for the Minnesota Vikings the following season.

Nessler enjoyed his time in Georgia so much, he has lived there the past 32 years in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth.

Basketball 

Beginning his broadcasting career in radio calling Georgia Tech hoops from 1980-85, Nessler would jumpstart his career with CBS doing men’s and women’s college basketball in 1990. Along with the expanded football duties in 1997 with ESPN, he appeared in more basketball games with the network, including the primetime Saturday afternoon contests. However SuperTuesday and Thursday Night Showcase with Dick Vitale and Sean Farnham has been his most reputable gig with ESPN since beginning the responsibility in 2006.

A cup of coffee from 2002-03 features Nessler’s only run with the NBA, but it did include a lead play-by-play role for the 2003 NBA Finals. However, Nessler was highly criticized for his lack of detail and the ability to bring out the best in his partners Bill Walton and Tom Tolbert.

CBS 2017

Nessler will bring a wealth of experience to the CBS booth starting next spring with NCAA March Madness, and he has publicly stated his anxiousness to do so earlier in June, per Gridiron Now.

“It’s a back-to-the-future kind of deal for me, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to be reunited with Gary. The SEC on CBS’ is the best college football show there is. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Last week I told you all that I had found my new favorite Christmas video–a Peruvian policeman dressed as Santa Claus busting coke dealers–but I think that I’ve just discovered a better one. Behold: a video recording of a seemingly polite British man who doesn’t understand why the police are telling him that he can’t have a picture of a penis and the words “bellend” made out in Christmas lights. Now obviously he gets it, but he’s just pretending because… he’s British. This is honestly so funny and droll you’d think this was something written by Ricky Gervais or Monty Python or someone.

First of all, until a minute ago, I had never heard of the phrase “bellend” before. So I looked it up for you and learned that it’s what British people call the mushroom tip. Now that you know that, it’s going to be a lot funnier. Honestly the more words that I write, the more time you’re being kept from watching this.

I’ll shut up now.

I have watched this no less than three times and still can’t figure out which is my favorite set of lines from the video. Is it:

“It’s a mushroom.”

“No, it’s not.”

“Well, I’m dyslexic, so I can’t really tell.”

Or is it:

“Why can’t you put Merry Christmas up like everyone else”

The 2016-2017 NCAA football season is nearing its finish line, but thankfully, the drama is just picking up. We’re firmly in bowl season, and with each passing day, we’re getting closer to the National Championship. Hoisting that coveted trophy is what every team in the country strives for, and we are now down to just four teams that have earned the right to compete in the College Football Playoff.

On December 31, 2016, #1 Alabama will take on #4 Washington in the Peach Bowl, and #2 Clemson will battle #3 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. The winners of these two matchups will face off against each other for the National Championship.

Despite winning the Big Ten Championship Game, Penn State (No. 5) was on the outside looking in to the College Football Playoff where instead conference foe Ohio State received one of the four spots. James Franklin and company will have to settle for the 103rd Rose Bowl against Southern California (No. 9) in Pasadena, California. A virtual home game for the Trojans, the Nittany Lions will be battle tested come January 2, where the annual New Year’s Day game has been pushed back one day due to the NFL season’s final week taking place on January 1.

One of the best rivalries in all of sports returns tonight, as the No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats travel to Louisville to face off with the No. 10 Cardinals. If you’re a sports fan like myself, it’s a nice little early Christmas present. Both teams have been in ranked in the top 15 for the entire season, and look to get a huge win to end 2016.

Kentucky is coming off their biggest win of the season last week against the No. 7 North Carolina Tar Heels, moving their record to 9-2. Freshman guard Malik Monk had a MONSTER game scoring 47 points, including 8 three pointers. Like they do every year, the Wildcats have multiple freshman in their starting lineup, and that’s usually where a bulk of their production to comes from. This will be another nice test for them as they look to go into a hostile environment of a top ten team, and come out with a win.

Louisville on the other hand has gone 10-1, with the only blemish on their record coming from a three point loss against the undefeated Baylor Bears. The Cards don’t have as many as flashy players as their in-state rival does, but they play great team basketball, and are also exceptional on the defensive side of the ball.

This will be the first big road test for these Kentucky freshman tonight, and on the flip side it’s also the biggest game for Louisville up to this point. We should be in store for a great game, and I personally cannot wait to watch it.

One of the best parts of the holiday season is all of the great college football bowl action, and we are in for a real treat in this year’s Orange Bowl. The #6 ranked Michigan Wolverines will take on the #10 ranked Florida State Seminoles in a must-see clash of college football powerhouses.

This will be the third time Michigan (10-2) has ever played against Florida State (9-3), and the series will get its long-awaited rubber match. The Wolverines won the first meeting, beating the Seminoles 20-18 in Ann Arbor in 1986. They played again in Ann Arbor in 1991, but this time around, Florida State beat the hell out of Michigan 51-31 to even things up.

Michigan will be making their 45th bowl appearance in school history, and they will look improve on their 21-23 bowl record. This will be the Wolverines’ third Orange Bowl appearance, as they previously lost to Oklahoma 14-6 in 1976 and beat Alabama 35-34 in 2000.

Florida State is also no stranger to the bright lights of bowl games. This will be their 46th bowl appearance in school history, and they have compiled a stellar 27-16-2 record up to this point. But Orange Bowls haven’t been quite as kind to the Seminoles, as they have gone 4-5 in these bowls through their first nine appearances.
