Tiziana Cantone, a woman from Naples who allegedly sent a sex tape to her ex-boyfriend, has reportedly committed suicide after her ex-boyfriend uploaded it to the internet. According to the Daily Mail, Tiziana sent a video of her having sex with another man to her ex-boyfriend to prove that their relationship was finally over. What she didn’t plan on, however, was that the jealous ex-boyfriend would upload it to the web in 2015 or that the video would be shared virally.
The tape got to be such a pop culture reference that Italian Serie A players Paolo Cannavaro and Antonio Floro Flores made their own parody of the video.
In the original video made by Tiziana, you can hear her in the background asking the cameraman, “Are you taking a video? Bravo.” In the parody, Flores films Cannavaro in a supermarket who asks if he’s being recorded, then, “Are you taking a video? Bravo.”
It literally became a meme.

In fact, the video became so notorious that Tiziana had to change her name legally.
When her own video was shared widely, Ms Cantone is said to have started to receive abusive messages. She was also reportedly often recognised on the street and even had to quit her job.
The sex tape became so widely known that she was also forced to change her name.
Ms Cantone underwent a legal process at the court of Naples North where she was granted a new legal name to avoid being recognised.
Just an awful, awful story, but par for the course for where we are on the web and as people.
The idea of revenge porn is something that’s relatively new to the internet, and I think it was already pretty clear that uploading something like that to the internet can have serious repercussions in the real world. Countless children and adults have committed suicide because of the humiliation they’ve faced from their friends and the online trolls who find pleasure in hurting others.
The American justice system has already come down hard on online bullies, especially in the world of revenge porn. As they should, too. I’m really curious what’s going to happen to her ex-boyfriend, who’s hopefully feeling absolutely awful about himself.
The thing is, I’m curious about the outcome of this case where the woman sent it to the man fist, clearly trying to hurt him emotionally? Does that remove him from being responsible if it was then uploaded to the web? My goto source for law questions Wikipedia has this to say:
The term “revenge porn” generally refers to the uploading of this sexually explicit material to humiliate and intimidate the subject, who has broken off the relationship… The images are usually accompanied by sufficient information to identify the pictured individual, typically names and locations, and can include links to social media profiles, home addresses and workplaces.
So does this Tiziana qualify as revenge porn? Almost definitely. It was uploaded to humiliate the subject, and Tiziana’s identity was well-known to the public.
