Meet Luke Aikins, The First Man To Jump Out Of A Plane With No Parachute

$

Luke Aikins Heaven Sent

Luke Aikins is a stunt man and adrenaline junkie who will willingly jump out of a plane at 25,000 feet with no parachute, no wingsuit, and no one jumping out of the plane to save him. Instead, he’ll be relying on a net to stop his fall. And you’ll be able to watch the whole thing on live TV, courtesy of the Fox TV special Heaven Sent Presented by Stride Gum.

Thankfully this isn’t Luke’s first rodeo, otherwise there’s very little chance that he’d actually survive the stunt. Luke has a long history of skydiving with Team Red Bull and has even been involved in a few of their earlier ventures, including the Stratos Jump with Felix Baumgartner. Now Luke says it’s time to make a name for himself. “I’ve had key roles in history-making events, but for this to be one that I get to do, I’m really excited to show the world a different way to approach something,” he told IndieWire.

So let’s learn a little bit more about who he is and what he’ll be doing.

Who Is Luke Aikins?

Luke Aikins Skydiver

Luke is a 42-year-old skydiver with around 18,000 jumps in his belt. Luke first got a taste for heights when he made a jump at 12. Four years later at 16 he completed his first solo jump. So what gave him the inspiration to do stuff like this?

“When I was little, I saw a picture of Joe Kittinger, who jumped from the edge of space back in 1960. I hope this just sparks imagination and that kids see the science behind it. That science project we all did in eighth grade, I get to do it on a massive scale, with other people helping to make it happen [source].”

Unsurprisingly, Luke comes from a family of jumpers and is still a huge part of the family business: a skydiving school. Since that solo jump at 16, Luke has pretty much devoted his life to skydiving, the sky, and teaching others to do the same. He’s a licensed commercial and helicopter pilot who’s also the owner of Para Tactics, a school that teaches advanced skydiving tactics to the special forces.

Luke is already the proud owner of three world records.

As far as his family life is concerned, Luke is also a father and a husband. Luke’s wife, Monica, has already told the world that although she won’t be watching the actual jump, she will be around for the preparation. She’ll also be a key part of the Heaven Sent special.

What Is Going To Happen?

On July 30th, 2016 at 8 PM EST, Luke is going to be part of Stride Gum Presents Heaven Sent–a stunt that will involve Luke jumping out of a plane at 25K feet and landing in a 100′ x 100′ net. If it sounds insane, that’s because it is. Although a ton of tests have been done safely, on one occasion one of the test dummies fell right through the netting.

“That was not a good thing to see,” Jimmy Smith, a veteran Hollywood PR man who originally had the idea of someone jumping out of a plane with no parachute.

But now all the experts are completely happy with the safety Jimmy will have around him. Still, he’s going to have to rely on air currents and body control to keep his body safe. We’ll see what happens this Sunday on Fox at 8 PM.

Diplo’s Lollapalooza Afterparty Is For Chicks Only

Diplo Lollapalooza Aftershow

One of the biggest artists performing at Lollapalooza 2016 is Diplo, who’s hosting his own aftershow Friday night at Studio Paris in Chicago. The only catch is that in order to see him, you need to cough up $100 (which is normal) and be a chick (which is not normal).

A couple of people online have shown disdain for the move, and this time we kind of agree with the haters. Honestly we see zero issue with having a girls-only party–there have been plenty of celebrities (Rob Gronkowski included)–who’ve gone that route, but we’re sure that a ton of people in Chicago for the weekend would have been looking forward to seeing him. It’s just crazy to us that he would charge the women for entrance.

But hey, if he can pack the house with a ton of chicks who’ve paid him, more power to him. It’s not like this is going to cause Diplo fans to turn their back on him.

Ronda Rousey Trolled So Hard By Rival UFC Fighter

You’d expect someone with the nickname ‘Cyborg’ to use technology to destroy her rivals, and that’s exactly what Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino did on Twitter.

Last night Justino offered fellow fighter Ronda Rousey her congratulations on her pregnancy, sending the twitterverse into a tizzy. But today Dana White told TMZ that nah, the former champion isn’t pregnant, so either ‘Cyborg’ got some bad intel or, more likely, she was just being an absolute savage in taunting the M.I.A. former champion.

Justino, the current Invicta FC Featherweight World Champion, has been trying to instigate a bout with Rousey. She had previously trolled in May with this tweet:

The good news for Rousey is that unlike 99.99% of Internet troll jobs she will get the chance, if she wants to take it, in the not-so-distant future to smash ‘Cyborg’ to pieces.

Justino might need to keep poking the bear if she’s going to be Rousey’s next opponent, because today current UFC Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes said today she wants to fight Rousey next, if Ronda ever gets back into the octagon.

2016 has been the year that Chance The Rapper has broken through, going from a buzzed-about upcoming rapper to a full-fledged star with his features on Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo and the release of Coloring Book. So it would have seemed like a natural fit if Chance was one of the headliners for hometown Chicago festival Lollapalooza, but for whatever reason he wasn’t slated to appear. Nonetheless, Chance made a surprising appearance during Flosstradamus’s closing set at the Perry’s stage, and to perform for the delirious festival-goers.

Lil Chano From 79th popped up onstage with a star-studded posse that included newly-signed Chicago Bull shooting guard Dwyane Wade, Wade’s wife and actress Gabrielle Union, former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams, and “White Iverson” rapper Post Malone. Chance performed two songs from coloring book, “No Problem” and “Summer Friends”. Check out the user-shot videos of the performance.

Justin Bieber Reportedly Turned Down RNC Gig After Consulting With LeBron

Donald Trump’s support among young voters is historically low, so the Republican National Convention knew what it needed to appeal to young voters was was a serious case of Bieber Fever. It seemed Bieber would have been on-brand because like the Republican candidate he too is a a narcissistic, widely reviled pile of hot garbage. But at the imploring of LeBron James, the Biebs turned down the GOP’s $5 million offer to play a GOP-funded concert 45 minutes away from the convention, according to TMZ. That would have been the biggest payday of his career.

Manager Scooter Braun, himself a Hillary Clinton supporter, and Bieber’s band, which consists of all African-Americans, also encouraged him to not do the show. Apparently the GOP was trying to convince them that the event was apolitical, but I somehow don’t believe a major political party would spend $5 million just because their party leaders were beliebers.

The idea that somebody might be convinced to vote for Donald Trump because Justin Bieber was playing at a GOP concert highlights the absurdity of modern-day presidential elections. Almost as absurd as, you know, the fact that Donald Trump is the Republican presidential candidate.

A silver lining if the notoriously vengeful and pro-deportation candidate actually wins is that maybe he’ll send Bieber back to Canada after this spurning.

I’m a born-and-raised Jew but Lyrical Lively’s hot fire just might turn me into a Christian.

The 74-year-old Bobbie Lively’s mixtapes Uh Huh and Singing the Word made her a lock to go viral if only she had the faintest clue what Twitter was, and go viral is exactly what she did in the past few days after Twitter user @Keith_The_God shared her gospel.

Even legendary Roots drummer and noted music connoisseur Questlove couldn’t get enough.

The Tupac of grandmother Christian rappers was thrilled after she found out she had gone viral.

WATCH: Margot Robbie Talks Tattooing Cara Delevingne [VIDEO]

margot robbie tonight show tattoo video

Margot Robbie visited The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night, and the comedy bits were kind of painful. Sadly, Jimmy Fallon just didn’t spent the entire film staring at the star of the upcoming Suicide Squad. (And the new Tarzan, which didn’t bomb too badly in theaters, and you can thank Margot for that.)

But the “talk” part of the talk show still let Margot maintain her fine reputation as one of the more charming sex symbols around. The conversation even included Margot discussing her work as an amateur tattooist, and how she tattooed Suicide Squad co-star Cara Delevingne.

We would rather see a movie about Margot Robbie tattooing Cara Delevingne than see Suicide Squad — and we’re looking forward to Suicide Squad. Also, it turns out that Margot can knock out a quick quirky illustration, so it’s also cool if Margot wants to tattoo us.

And don’t bother us with talk about the dangers of amateur tattooing and unlicensed artists. We’re sure Margot and/or Cara had a trailer that was much nicer than some dingy prison cell. Also, Margot is Australian. They’re probably born with a license to give tattoos…

New Movie Trailers: ‘Hacksaw Ridge,’‘The Accountant,’ And More… [VIDEOS]

hacksaw ridge trailer video

The 2016 San Diego Comic Con sent out so many trailers last week that it’ll be a while before we see a new one for a superhero movie. The good news is that some real prestige productions can now step up for awards season — and even the trashiest movie here is directed by a real god of Asian cinema. Take a look at a fine mix of cinematic sneak peeks….

Hacksaw Ridge

We’ve already looked at Mel Gibson trying to come back as a movie star in Blood Father — but he’s getting a lot more attention as a director with Hacksaw Ridge. This trailer is certainly a reminder that he’s one of the best directors to ever come around from being in front of the camera. There’s a lot of great imagery here. It’s also a WWII story about a pacifist, so the movie might even be politically correct. Don’t worry, though. Andrew Garfield is playing a peace-loving medic in the bloodiest battle of the war…

The Accountant

Ben Affleck doesn’t exactly need a comeback nowadays, but this movie sure looks a lot classier than what we expected from another sterile crime drama. The sterility seems to work in this tale of a guy with serious social issues who freelances as an accountant for the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations — but we’re also pretty sure there’s a message here about how the real crooks are legitimate corporations…

The Great Wall

Who’s going to save China from a great threat over 1,000 years ago? Matt Damon! Yeah, there’ll be some complaints about that, but Matt’s really just a token white guy in this epic Chinese production that reveals the Great Wall was really built to save the region from monsters. Really big monsters, too. Probably dragons, but we can’t be too sure from this trailer. The movie’s directed by Zhang Yimou, too, who gave us House of Flying Daggers….

Ithaca

And here’s a trailer for a movie that you don’t want to see, but it’s a great look at a plastic-surgery disaster. We were at a film festival where Ithaca screened, and nobody could believe that Meg Ryan directed a WWII drama where she also starred while sporting a rebuilt face straight out of 2015. It’s damn distracting.  Not even a Tom Hanks cameo can save this one. Seriously, there hasn’t been anything this bad since Cher got Botoxed into a frozen face that made 1996’s Faithful practically unreleasable…

Brooke Crain is a 23-year-old BMX cyclist from Visalia, California, and she will be making her second Olympic appearance in Rio. Crain was able to qualify for the Olympics due to her standing in the Union Cycliste Internationale Women’s Elite rankings. The U.S. sends their top two BMX cyclists to Rio, and Craine’s 1,130 points were seventh in the world and second only to Alise Post in America.

The Mt. Whitney High School grad is hoping that the second time will be the charm when it comes to bringing home some Olympic hardware. In 2012, Brooke Crain was originally an Olympic alternate, but she ended up competing in London as a last minute replacement after Arielle Martin suffered an injury during a training run. Crain crashed in her qualifying run and finished in eighth place in the final event.

Let’s do our part in wishing Brooke Crain better luck this time around by taking a look at 22 of her hottest photos.

I was very curious as to how the Neal Gamby (Danny McBride) and Lee Russell (Walton Goggins) era was going to begin, and last week’s episode of Vice Principals didn’t let me down. Once Russell was able to discover that Dr. Belinda Brown (Kimberly Hebert Gregory) fired the vice principals at her last three schools, our dynamic duo knew that they needed to make some moves. They decided to act friendly and obedient to Brown’s face while secretly trying to sabotage her behind her back.

To find some blackmail material on Brown, Gamby and Russell broke into her house. Unfortunately for them, Brown was clean as a whistle. This news was extremely upsetting to Gamby and Russell, causing them to destroy all of her possessions. But Russell didn’t stop at smashing vases and delivering textbook karate kicks through paintings. He burned Brown’s house to the ground and stole her diamonds.

Later on, it looked like Brown knew that she was betrayed by her vice principals when she called Gamby and Russell into her office. It would turn out to be the exact opposite, as she was completely unaware that Gamby and Russell were responsible for her house burning down. She instead thanked them for being terrific employees after her assistant Blythe Sason (Danny Boushebel) gave them a glowing performance review.

The episode ended with Gamby using his share of the diamonds Russell stole to pay off the stable fees for his daughter’s horse.

90-year-old Woman Who Was Missing From Her Nursing Home Was Killed By An Alligator

A 90-year-old woman who had vanished from her assisted living facility was found dead in a nearby pond after being killed by an alligator attack, authorities said.

Bonnie Walker was reported missing on Wednesday morning before being found dead three hours later in a retention pond behind the Brookdale Senior Living Facility, where she was a resident.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office ruled that Walker’s death was accidental and caused by “multiple sharp and blunt force injuries,” according to WBTW News 13. It is likely that Walker slipped, fell down a steep embankment, and landed in the water, attracting the attention of the alligator, who was removed from the pond on Friday.

The Department of Natural Resources believes this is the first alligator related fatality in South Carolina’s entire history.

Alligators have been wreaking havoc in recent months, with this death coming on the heels of a deadly June alligator attack of a two-year-old boy at Disney World.

The crash took place in Lockhart, Texas, about 30 miles from Austin. Authorities are currently investigating.

“Cecilia and I offer our deepest condolences for all those who have been affected by today’s heartbreaking tragedy,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott wrote in a statement issued soon after the news broke. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, as well as the Lockhart community. The investigation of the cause of this tragic accident will continue, and I ask all of Texas to join us in praying for those lost.”

There’s no better gig than being on team USA. You easily up your Q score and become an American hero by pulverizing countries with third-rate talent by 60 points en route to a gold medal. Which is why these guys are having the time of their lives, jamming out to Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A thousand miles’ on the team airplane.

Except for Carmelo Anthony, that is. Melo is about to become the first player to ever play in four Olympics (and let’s be real, also the first to win three gold medals) which means he’s officially the “get off my lawn” old man of Team USA. So while Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving and Team USA are all enjoying themselves to the 2001 pop hit in this incredible Instagram video posted by Demar DeRozan, Melo looks like he wishes he brought his parachute so he could jump off the plane.

Instagram Photo

This might even top Terry Crews’ rendition of ‘A thousand miles’ in White Chicks. Then again, if it weren’t for Crews’ pioneering performance it would probably still not be socially acceptable for Team USA to sing along to Vanessa Carlton.

Draymond Green also posted countless snapchats from the plane, which includes grumpy Melo calling out Kevin Durant for the enormous KD on his shirt, and Draymond ribbing “Old man rivers” Melo for already being 19 when Ruben Studdard released ‘Sorry 2004’.

Let’s hope the Team USA players give us some more video gems throughout the Rio games.

The flyweight class wasn’t the only weight class on the fight card with some disruption. Original Welterweight contenders, Claudio Silva and Siyar Bahadurzada, both dropped out due to injury and illness, respectively. In the end, Ross Pearson will face Jorge Masvidal.

Skydiver Luke Aikins will attempt to jump out of a plane without a parachute or wingsuit and land in a net 25,000 feet below him. Although this might sound like the act of a suicidal man, it’s actually the idea behind the newest Fox network live special, Stride Gum Presents Heaven Sent.

This Saturday, July 30th at 8 PM EST, Luke will do what no man has ever done before and willingly jump to his possible death. And you’re going to want to watch.

Thankfully it’s not as though Fox pulled Luke off the streets to do the insane–this guy has a ton of training. He’s a Red Bull athlete who was instrumental in helping Felix Baumgartner train for the now famous Stratos jump. That being said, not everything has gone to plan. One of the test dummies that they dropped from the airplane went right through the net.

Golf is usually the tamest of all the sports. Fans are required to stay silent while a player hits the ball, and expected to politely clap to show their appreciation. But when somebody in the audience ignored that etiquette today and made a remark during Bubba Watson’s backswing during the PGA Championship, Watson’s caddie went after the jackass with the tenacity of Tupac in ‘Hit ’em Up’.

Ted Scott, the caddie for the two-time Masters champ, quickly picked out the perpetrator and, as Watson stared down the heckler, verbally assaulted him with the epic zinger, “Go back and watch in your parents’ basement. You’re better there. Tweet about it.”  Scott is among the highest paid caddies on the PGA Tour, and today he proved he’s worth every cent.

Bubba Watson has a reputation for rubbing people the wrong way and is the least popular player on the PGA Tour among his peers, so it’s fitting that his caddie is also an absolute savage.

The next jerk who wants to say something while Bubba takes a swing is definitely going to think twice. Now somebody get Ted Scott a spot on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle.

Welterweight Championship: (Champion) Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley

It was expected to be an even fight, but it didn’t take long for Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley to become the new Welterweight Champion of the world. After sizing each other up at the beginning of the first round, Woodley connected with a huge right hook to Lawler’s face and then pounced on him and threw a flurry of punches until the referee was forced to stop the fight. Wow.
