There wasn’t a single big summer blockbuster making a bow in the world of trailers this week — but we still got a lot pleasant surprises. Check out these modest productions which are hoping to turn a decent profit before the summer film season really starts. Well, one of them is probably strictly straight-to-video. Even that one’s got a good twist, though. You’ll probably just watch the trailer, though…

Midnight Special

We still say this looks like a Firestarter remake — which, for those who don’t follow those things, was an ’80s movie based on a Stephen King novel about government agents chasing down a kiddie with special powers. At this point, though, we’ve heard enough critics we respect saying that the movie is a lot more than just another attempt at setting up a new teen franchise. There’s enough eerie imagery here to get us hoping this modest movie manages to break out big….

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny

Netflix has stepped up to produce this surprise sequel to the trippy action movie from 2000 — with acrobatic Asian fighters trying to keep an evil warlord from getting his hands on a great warrior’s sword. Donnie Yen takes the lead, and Michelle Yeoh shows she still has it as an aging kung-fu heroine. Now we just have to remember the plot of the first one…

Kindergarten Cop 2

We were hoping for more of a gritty reboot when word got out that Dolph Lundgren had taken on this very unexpected sequel. (Yes, even more so than Crouching Tiger 2 suddenly happening.) Instead, this startlingly retro trailer makes it clear that Kindergarten Cop 2 is even more of a kiddie movie than the first one. That’s a waste of some fine casting, then. They could’ve just signed on Larry the Cable Guy….

The Darkness

“Hey, Mikey,” says Kevin Bacon in this creepy trailer — and he isn’t asking the kid to try some Life cereal. (Google dat.) This thriller looks to be a seriously disturbing look at more kids terrorized by creatures who have a real influence on their artwork. Also, this new crop of demons (or werewolves, or whatever) have dirty hands that are a supernatural challenge to a Mr. Clean eraser. We’re still interested, though…

10 Cloverfield Lane

And, finally, here’s the latest sneak look at the Cloverfield movie that came out of nowhere. This is the commercial the studio threw together for the Walking Dead premiere, and we get the premise that Mary Ellen Winstead thinks John Goodman is crazy as he keeps her in his bomb shelter hiding from something. We still don’t know what’s happening, but that sure sounds like the original Cloverfield Monster’s roar at the end of this spot…

Deadpool isn’t resting in the wake of his huge success — with Ryan Reynolds staying in character to launch a very NSFW rant as the superhero to make a bid (or ruin) his chances for Deadpool to host Saturday Night Live. And, in the process, he’s covering (or sampling) Kanye West’s leaked rant from SNL.

Highlights include Deadpool citing his own massive influence: “I’ve got the biggest opening rated-R movie of all time. Are they f–king crazy? I’m 50 percent more influential than MC Hammer, Apostle Judas Iscariot, the KIA Sorrento! 10 percent more influential than Barbara Bush, the Muppets, Bob Newhart! 60 percent more influential than the iPhone 5, shredded cheese and Dr. Ruth — 7 percent less influential than the Urban Dictionary.”

It also looks like Ryan got the Deadpool marketing gurus back on work for some nice parodies of Saturday Night Live bumpers. Those probably look better than what SNL would put together if Deadpool was really hosting.

Check it out and place your bets on how this madness will play out. This could happen. The internet got Betty White to host an episode, and she actually lived through the thing. Also, seriously, NSFW. They didn’t even censor the subtitles…

Police say that Jason Brian Dalton, 45,  is the psycho killer who terrorized Kalamazoo, Michigan last night in a murderous spree that left six people dead and injured three. He was arrested early Sunday following a traffic stop — about six hours after he began a wild shooting rampage that seems utterly random. He had a bad reputation as a driver for Uber, though…

Dalton is accused of opening fire at an apartment complex (where the first shots were reported at 6 p.m.), a Kia car dealership, and a Cracker Barrel — with those last shootings reported at 10: 30 p.m.

A woman was wounded at the apartment complex. A father and son died at the car dealership, and another person survived being shot. Four victims were killed outside of the Cracker Barrel, and a 14-year-old girl was wounded.

Dalton was arrested at 12:45 a.m. after a traffic stop in downtown Kalamazoo. Police have said that Dalton doesn’t have a criminal record. The video below is from this morning’s press conference with more of the latest details….

Rolling Stone is facing more headaches in the wake of their retracted UVA rape article — as the controversial “victim” that everyone keeps calling just “Jackie” has been called for a court appearance. Newsweek is reporting that Virginia judge Glen Conrad has ordered “Jackie” to show up for “one-day, seven-hour deposition” — which Judge Conrad expects “will be sufficient” to clear up some things in one of the many court cases that Rolling Stone is dealing with over their embarrassment of an article. In this case, Nicole Eramo — an associate dean at the University of Virginia — is suing the magazine, corporate parent Wenner Media, and Rolling Stone reporter Sabrina Rubin Erdely, who wrote the would-be exposé, “A Rape on Campus.”

Rolling Stone had to retract the article after it soon became apparent that Jackie’s tale of a gang-rape at a fraternity house had plenty of problems. Eramo is suing over her depiction as an uncaring administrator, saying that Erdely’s piece was “the result of a wanton journalist who was more concerned with writing an article that fulfilled her preconceived narrative about the victimization of women on American college campuses.”

Jackie’s own story has become a real mess, too — with accounts by her friends suggesting that she had initially created a fictional gang rape to get attention from student Ryan Duffin, who’d previously rejected Jackie’s romantic advances. Some catfishing was involved, too, of course.

Shia LaBeouf’s sh*tty art show may have finally ended, but after punching a kid in the face mid-elevator ride, he’s still in the news.

The eccentric actor who’s best known for his recent string of public arrests rather than any film or “art” show he’s participated in just spent 24 hours riding in a London elevator this weekend in the name of art. Why? Um, something about collective voices and being the absolute worst. But at least there were some exciting bits – like when LaBeouf was prompted to punch one of his visitors in the face.

Per Mirror:

Putting the 29-year-old actor on the spot, the student – who was wearing a black jacket and grey hoodie – said: “I’m a performance artist. Can you help me with completion of my next piece by punching me in the face?”

A shocked Shia said: “Oh man, you want to punch me in the face?”

The obvious answer? Hell yes.

The student, who claimed that he had waited for seven hours to meet the star in the elevator, said he would remove his hat so LaBeouf could get him right where it hurts. The 29-year-old Transformers star’s response? “I don’t want to punch you very hard!”

Naturally the kid goaded him with, “don’t be a p*ssy.” Then sh*t got weird.

“I don’t like doing it though…. I just met you,” Shia said.

As Shia hit the student, his friends could be heard laughing, while the aspiring performance artist laughed and begged for it to be “harder”.

“Or a slap at least?” he begged Shia.

Dude why are you so into getting punched by Shia LaBeouf? Is it because they’re the same hands that once touched Megan Fox? Or are you just into weird sh*t?

Whatever the answer, it’s weird either way. Luckily the whole awkward encounter – which also included a long list of questions mostly about Kanye West – was caught on live stream.

Nearly a year after we set out to find America’s most awesome college girl, we finally have a winner! This contestant beat out thousands of applicants through a series of rounds and proved to have the best support team of family, friends, and readers, who ultimately led her to victory in the finals.

So without further ado…congrats to Kendall Fuhrman from the University of Southern California!

Kendall was a strong contender from the start of the Miss COED 2016 competition, and with her super cool laid back personality, and let’s be honest, nearly perfect looks, she was going to be tough to beat. Second place finisher, Kaitlin Alexander almost gave her a run for her money, but she hardly wavered from the top spot.

Yet Kendall proved she’s more than just a pretty face. The sophomore at USC is an International Relations Global Business major with emphasis in Marketing and a minor in French. Yikes; that’s a mouthful! In addition to her legit-sounding major, she’s also the Marketing/Sales Representative for White Pro Teeth, an intern at CMG worldwide, lived and studied abroad in France for a year, and got a 4.0 her fall 2015 semester.

Thanks to her supporters, she’s walking away with more than just bragging rights. Rob Gronkowski just pulled the most Gronk move ever – the $54 MILLION NFL star offered a couple $10K to “bang in front of everybody” during his annual family cruise, in the presence of 2,500 onlookers.

What exactly will people do for money? Apparently, a lot.

The New England Patriots Tight End invited his closest friends and most loyal fans to join him on a three-day cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. Each guest had to shell out a minimum of $700 to get on #Gronk’sPartyShip, a price well worth paying considering the on-board festivities.

With his three siblings and Dad, Gronk launched into hard partying, aka #GettingGronked, which consisted of stripping, twerking, and pretty much any other type of debaucherous behavior you can think of. This time Gronkowski also offered a couple $10 grand to have sex in public.

“10 grand cash right now if you bang in front of everybody,” said Gronkowski. Ballsy.

Reading from Gronkowski’s shoulder shrug, it doesn’t seem like the couple took up on his outrageous offer. Still, revelers enjoyed the booze, entertainment from Flo Rida, Redfoo, Waka Flocka Flame, and Gronk’s very own sexy dance.

Campus protests have spread worldwide as of late, and according to a new article about the epidemic, a large majority of Brown University students are failing their classes because of it.

An article from the Brown Daily Herald suggests that many students are dropping out or failing because they are participating in too many on-campus protests. One interviewee, an undergrad whom they named David, discussed how he was affected by his particular extracurriculars.

“There are people breaking down, dropping out of classes and failing classes because of the activism work they are taking on,” David explained. “My grades dropped dramatically. My health completely changed. I lost weight. I’m on antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills right now. (Counseling and Psychological Services) counselors called me. I had deans calling me to make sure I was okay.”

And he isn’t the only one.

Justice Gaines, another Brown University student activist, described feeling overwhelmed after two racist columns were published by The Herald, so much so that she “had a panic attack and couldn’t go to class for several days.”

Of course fighting for a cause you believe in can affect your psyche, and racism in particular is a strenuous issue. Its prevalence on college campuses has made its way into the media within the past year, and for the first time in a long time, students are speaking out about it. Unfortunately other issues have also been thrown into the mix, taking away from more important matters at hand (such as the core of the Black Lives Matter movement) and creating a cesspool of “political correctness.”

But their overall thinking is valid – how could you not stress about all of the bad things when you throw yourself into the middle of them? Is Brown doing the right thing by being lenient and concerning, or going about it the wrong way by placating them instead of discouraging the behavior? What can be done from here?

Whatever the answer, it better not be to throw away that $200k degree – that’s just wasteful.

If you don’t remember Stephanie Beaudoin, you’re a chump. The gorgeous 21-year-old Canadian went viral roughly two years ago after getting arrested for committing 42 different break-ins (illegal, but impressive) and stealing $58,000 worth of items. She was also charged with illegal possession of three firearms when her car was searched by authorities around the same time. With all of the free press, it was no wonder she was crowned the world’s hottest thief. Just a quick glance at her Facebook page could confirm such an accusation.

Shortly after she blew up on the Internet, she was more or less forgotten about, just like everything else that’s ever appeared online. Luckily Vice brought her back into our lives with some great news – after spending 90 days in jail, Beaudoin landed herself a modeling gig.

Before her arrest, Beaudoin had been a fledgling model with a limited career that mostly consisted of posing for calendars. “Nothing really big,” she said. But as her picture continued to make international headlines, the young woman became in demand. In July 2015, her photo made the cover of local mens mag Summum, and in September 2015, she was recruited by B Models Management.

Unfortunately for Beaudoin, there is a catch: she can’t discuss the criminal activity that got her here.

But the judge’s ruling limits her professional opportunities: While she can continue to model, her image can’t be used to promote criminal behavior, which means she pretty much has to drop the “sexy thief” monicker. In his ruling, the judge strongly recommended she stop modeling altogether, since keeping creative control over her image could be difficult. Her modeling agency says it is “studying current options” for more opportunities.

Beaudoin is OK with these restrictions.

“I can have modeling contracts as Stéphanie Beaudoin. I could have my face on a skin care product,” she said. “I just can’t do it if the brand says something like ‘Stephanie the criminal’ or whatever. It’s a pretty OK condition.”

She’s already debuted her first magazine cover… and we’re heading to Canada to get a copy.
