Wolfmother, the Australian arena rock band best known for their hit single “Woman,” has released their new album Victorious which is their fourth studio album. There’s not much new about Wolfmother or Victorious–other than the band members–but the upside is that means they’re still rocking out hard.

Simple Plan, the Canadian emo rock group who were most popular ten years ago released their new album today. The record is titled Taking One for the Team–an analogy I can relate to after writing this article myself, rather than giving it to an intern, after realizing that they’d probably quit if I told them to write anything about Simple Plan.

Please do not judge me or my already questionable previous work for this article. I’m simply writing about the biggest music releases of the day, and believe it or not, Taking One for the Team is the biggest album of the week.

You see, Simple Plan has a loyal group of fans who’ve helped support the rock group even though emo music and pop-punk is largely dead. Need proof? Somehow they’re #1 on the Hardcore/Punk charts over in Amazon Canada. That’s not quite platinum status, but it’s something.

An email from a Bloomsburg University Phi Iota Chi sorority sister explaining why they want to recruit attractive women has gone viral. And wouldn’t you know it? People are trashing on them for that opinion.

But before we get into the email itself (which is really just a Facebook message) let’s give you a little background. We can tell you that the sorority in question is Phi Iota Chi (Pixie), a local sorority that exists at Bloomsburg University. As for Bloomsburg, it’s a school in Pennsylvania known for its parties.

Not too bad, right? Honestly I was ready for a scorched earth take on how ugly girls make the sorority worse and that they’re headed downhill because of all the “weird girls” they’ve bid.

Yesterday a helicopter touring Pearl Harbor and the area around the U.S.S. Arizona crashed into shallow water, and a tourist filmed the whole thing on video.

First things first: all five of passengers onboard are currently alive. One is in critical condition but the other four seemed to holding up as well as one could be. According to NPR “people at the scene, posting on social media accounts, said the crash victims appeared to be conscious and were moving their arms when taken away on stretchers.”

After the crash, bystanders immediately jumped into the water and helped to save the victims who weren’t able to get out of the chopper themselves.

“I took off my shirt and dove in,” he said, describing how he, a Navy sailor, a federal police officer and another man took turns diving to the submerged helicopter and trying to free a passenger with a knife. “He was strapped into his seat in the back of the aircraft.”

They eventually freed the teenage passenger [source].

The helicopter was operated by a company called Genesis Aviation who fly out of Honolulu International Airport.

Ramarni Ball is reportedly Floyd Mayweather’s new girlfriend, which probably wouldn’t be as newsworthy if she wasn’t 19-years-old and he 38. But alas, here we are!

The former professional boxer has four kids, all ranging in age from 11 to 15, making this even more disturbing. On the bright side, Ramarni, who is presumably a student and not doing anything else with her life because she’s barely an adult, is beautiful. Does that make it any less creepy? Today starts the best three days for a Penn State student’s year: it’s officially THON weekend. For 46 hours, students, alumni, and supporters will prove that cancer cannot and will not win. Over 15,000 students will volunteer to stand in the Bryce Jordan Center for a 46-hour dance marathon with no sitting and no sleeping for the fight against pediatric cancer. Throughout the weekend, there are performances of song and dance, talent shows by the sports teams, a pep rally, speeches from the families who have suffered, tributes to students who have passed from this horrible disease, and other heart wrenching and tear jerking presentations.

At the end of the 46 hours, the dancers are finally allowed to sit, where the reveal of the THON total is displayed, number by number.

Last year, Penn State raised $13,026,653.23, and in 2014 we raised $13,343,517.33 all for the kids. I remember the look on my dads face when I told him. “Thirteen million?! Don’t you mean Thirteen thousand?” However, the effort that Penn Staters, alumni, and other supporters put in to see the smiles on their THON child’s face will forever be priceless.

This year, two out of the three canning weekends were cancelled, so donations mainly came from alternate fundraising and what we call THONvelopes (requests to donate through the mail or on a website). This will severely impact the THON total this year.

[Editor’s note: Sadly a member of a PSU sorority Vitalyia “Tally” Seport died this year in a car crash on her way back from a canning event. There will likely be a memorial of sorts for her this weekend.]

However, people often lose sight of what THON is all about in the crazy competition that is trying to raise more money than other orgs. What people forget to realize is that THON is not about any certain club or organization raising the most amount of money. It is not about the dollar signs. THON is not about promoting sisterhood or brotherhood. THON is about giggling with kids of all ages all year long, seeing the smiles on the faces of children in which you put there, making bright memories in a situation where bright spots are few and far between, understanding that giving up your social time or friends here and there is not actually missing out on the “best four years of your life” and that in your young lives, you have gained devotion to a united fight that one day you will know you helped find a cure for. That is what THON is about.

I heard this beautiful quote when I experienced my first THON as a freshman, “Those things that we do for ourselves dies with us. Those that we do for others and humanity live on and become immortal.” So this weekend let’s keep sight of what THON is really about and dance our hearts away, for the kids, for the cure, and for the glory!

So, what the f*ck is going on here? According to people who are actually following this so-called “performance art experience,” Shia is riding an Oxford elevator with fellow genius artists like Nastja Rönkkö and Luke Turnerwill from 9 a.m. local time Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday. But for what reason?

Matthew Uhalde, a 19-year-old graduate student at Cornell University, is suing New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman because of claims that the 21-year-old legal drinking age “ostracized and excluded” him from his graduate student peers.

According to an article that Matthew wrote for Cornell’s paper, The Tab, he decided to sue AG Schneiderman because of a particular event he was rejected from:

I received an invitation to a grad student social at the Big Red Barn last week, only to be thrown out. The manager said it was a liability having me there, even if I didn’t drink. That was the impetus of all this.

The lawsuit states that, “Mr. Uhlade feels ostracized and excluded. The State’s minimum drinking age prevents him with associating with his classmates and peers. This is causing Mr. Uhalde to to experience emotional distress.”

So why is he suing the state of New York? Good question. Believe it or not, the legal drinking age is actually determined on a state-by-state basis. The reason that all states have chosen 21 as the minimum age is because of the National Minimum Legal Drinking Act, signed in 1984. A very non-chill bro named Senator Frank Lautenberg from New Jersey decided that it’d be a good idea to scare states into following his law or risk losing 10% of their federal highway construction budget.

So, correction: there are two nuns running a lucrative and very much illegal pot-growing business in California right now—one they are willing to talk to reporters about.

“Everything we’re doing is illegal,” Sister Kate cheerfully told ABC 7 News in Denver. “Those plants you just saw in my garage; they’re illegal. The making of the salves is illegal.” The marijuana Sister Kate and Darcy grow is heated in crockpots and distilled into salves in tinctures, which they sell online, on Etsy. “When Congress declared pizza a vegetable, I declared myself a nun,” said Sister (is that fitting here?) Kate because, why not? She says that the idea of sisterhood, that of community and fellowship, is something that they both practice. They also wear the infamous nun habit, which adds an odd air of legitimacy to the whole thing.

Of course, instead of putting their faith in the healing power of Christ, the core belief in this convent is in the healing power of CBD, a chemical found in cannabis—marijuana plants.

This week marks one of the most important in the craft beer calendar; a week where several breweries release their most sought after beers. These are beers you have heard the name regardless if you have never tried them or craft beer itself. This weekend I am enjoying one of those beers; this weekend Bell’s Brewery Hopslam is What’s on Tap!

I got to be honest; I have not had more than a sip of this brew in several years. I found its growing popularity (and price) outweighed the beer itself; in fact many people within the craft beer industry refer to it as “Hype-Slam.” But I gave it a try and I must say I am pleasantly surprised at this year’s batch, which was packaged entirely in cans.

The beer’s aroma and taste are exactly what one would want and hope from a double IPA, huge citrus flavors of grapefruit and lime (I am guessing one of the six varieties of hops not mentioned is citra). But with this beer there is an added sweetness on both the nose and within each sip which is an almost honey flavor. I am sure this is to balance the beer so that both the 10% ABV is hidden and the typical IPA bitterness kick is not too over-powering. get a lot of honey.

If you are into IPAs you have to give this one a try. Yes you might only need one but it is still worth it. Hopslam is a fantastic beer that pairs well with any food but to get the full enjoyment I recommend drinking it on its own.

Royce Gracie brought the brawling back to MMA when he took on Ken Shamrock at Houston’s Toyota Center as the main event of Bellator 149. That’s an old-fashioned knee-to-the-groin that helped Gracie win a much-protested TKO over Shamrock.

As you’ll see in the video below, the referee showed the timing of a WWE professional in carefully missing the shot to the groin. Gracie thought, “Well, that must’ve been cool,” and then pummeled Shamrock with plenty more punches. That ended things at 2:22 into the first round. That’s how a 49-year-old MMA fighter beats a 52-year-old man for his first win since 2007.

No apologies from Gracie, either, who later declared: “I’m a fighter. We come from the beginning — no gloves, no rules, no time limits.”

This was supposed to be a big deal remake, too, since it’s been over 20 years since these two went into the ring. Shamrock lost to Gracie at UFC 1, and their bout at UFC 5 ended in a draw after the longest fight in the history of the UFC.

Shia LaBeouf has ended his 24-hour ride in an elevator at Oxford University — which was a performance art piece to set up his talk at the esteemed academy later today. You can see that talk via the video later below, which is currently archiving the final moments of Shia’s stay.

The esteemed actor will discuss his long elevator ride, which — in a pretty disappointing twist for a place like Oxford — mainly had people lining up to ride with Shia for a while and take selfies. The high point was when a fellow performance artist asked Shia to punch him in the face.

The punch wasn’t captured on camera, but Shia seemed to think it was as loony as riding in an elevator for 24 hours. Or maybe he was worried that the performance artist’s vision involved a lawsuit against a celebrity.

We wish that somebody would give us a chance to punch a performance artist in the face.
