Nick Dixon, a standout football player from Spartanburg High School, has passed away after complications from a routine surgery. According to WSPA-TV, Dixon was undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus and torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee when the complications occurred.

Dixon’s death came one day after he committed to play college football at Wingate University in North Carolina.

As news of his death spread, Dixon’s friends launched a GoFundMe account to raise money to help cover funeral and burial expenses for his family.

The fundraiser reads:

Nick was an awesome football player at Spartanburg High School. He sported #7 as a defensive end, linebacker, and running back, and was on his way to Wingate University on a four year scholarship. He was loved by his family and friends and was always the life of the party. My family and I are asking for your help to raise funds to lay him to rest. As time is of the essence, every donation from the least to the greatest would be greatly appreciated. Nicholas’ mother, Terri Littlejohn, will be the beneficiary of the funds that will be used for the funeral and burial expenses. Thank you for all your prayers and support during this time of bereavement.

At the time of this writing, the account has raised nearly $17,000 from 219 donors and has surpassed the $15,000 goal.

“It’s always a shock to people when someone so young and so vibrant loses their life. Nick was a wonderful student, wonderful athlete,” said Spartanburg School District 7 Superintendent Dr. Russell Booker in a statement. “Nick was part of our Viking early college program early during his high school career, which means he was already earning some college credits.”

Our deepest condolences go out to Dixon’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult and tragic time.

A high school teacher from Navasota, Texas has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students and was arrested on Monday, January 14.

What Happened?

Jennifer Drushel, 30, was arrested for allegedly having an improper relationship with a high school student. She is now charged with an Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student, which is a second-degree Felony according to KAGS. If convicted, Drushel could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Navasota Examiner reported that the school district officials received anonymous information Thursday, January 10 that Drushel had allegedly been involved supplying alcohol to minors and drinking with them.

Navasota ISD Superintendent Dr. Stu Musick said in a statement on Monday that the investigation “lead to information regarding the improper exchange of electronic communications between the teacher and the student. Further information leads to evidence of an improper relationship.”

Navasota Police Chief Shawn Myatt stated that NISD contacted the department in reference to a possible student/ teacher relationship at the high school Friday, January 11.

“Officers investigated the allegation and interviewed the parties involved,” Myatt said. “Sufficient evidence was gathered and an arrest warrant was issued January 14.”

According to the school district, the 30-year-old teacher had at least one encounter with the student at an off-campus location.

Musick told the station KAGS the victim was not a minor.

“No matter the age of the student, a teacher or staff member, as an adult, is held to a higher standard of accountability by both the law and the Educator Code of Ethics,” Musick said. “We will continue to work with the investigation of the Navasota Police Department and continued that investigation on our end, as well.”

Drushel has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation and wouldn’t be allowed to return to any campus.

Drushel, 30, of College Station, is a high school teacher at Navasota High School in Texas. She has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students and is facing a second-degree felony charge.

Drushel’s staff profile has been wiped from the school district’s website, but an archived page shows she was a Forensic Science and Environmental Science Teacher and the school’s Color-guard Director.

Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at the University of Tennessee has been placed on interim suspension while the university investigates an alleged rape. Phi Gamma Delta is commonly referred to as FIJI.

Tyra Haag, a spokeswoman for the University of Tennessee, said that the school’s Campus Authority Security received a report of an alleged rape on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house. Additionally, Haag said in her statement the unidentified victim claimed that the perpetrator was a known acquaintance.

FIJI was placed on interim suspension on interim suspension on Saturday, December 1, 2018, and will remain on suspension until further notice. As a result of their suspension, the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity must cease all activities at the chapter.

According to WVLT 8, a spokeswoman for the University of Tennessee Police Department said that officers are investigating the reported rape and that the case is still open and active at this time. Additionally, the UTPD said that because the case is still open, additional details such as information about the accused rapist can not be released.

The interim suspension of Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Tennessee is the latest major Greek life suspension, expulsion, disaffiliation, or overhaul in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State, and Penn State have all suspended fraternities for various reasons.

Fraternities have been suspended or expelled across the nation as Greek life organizations and universities attempt to grapple with the pitfalls of hazing, alcohol and drug abuse, and sexual assault.

Schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State, and Penn State have all suspended or expelled fraternities for various reasons.

Jazz Fest will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019 and on Tuesday, January 15 the event organizers officially announced the loaded lineup of acts that will be taking the stage from April 25-28 and May 2-5 in New Orleans.

The year, the event features headliners like The Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, Katy Perry, Jimmy Buffett, Chris Stapleton, and Bob Segar.

We are just over a month away from the 2019 NBA All-Star Game which will take place at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina; home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. Ahead of the game, someone took to Twitter to show off what appears to be a leaked version of this year’s All-Star Game uniforms.

Unfortunately, the jerseys are very similar to what we saw last year and uninspiring.

The game will feature a black team vs. a white team, with the Air Jordan logo prominently displayed on the chest of the jersey. It marks the second consecutive year that the All-Star jerseys will feature team logos rather than “East” or “West” to represent the conferences.

The jerseys also feature red, white, and blue accents, along with red stars down the side.

According to ESPN’s Paul Lukas of Uni Watch, the rumored leak matches a descript that he previously heard regarding the 2019 jerseys.

The jerseys match a description recently provided to ESPN.com by a source who said the All-Star jerseys would be “black vs. white again, current team logo on the chest … [with] red-white-blue neckline and sleeve trim, stars on the side panels.” The source said the multicolored trim is meant to evoke the uniforms from the 1991 All-Star Game in Charlotte.

The 2019 NBA All-Star Game will take place February 17, 2019, on TNT and TBS. This season, teams will be drafted by “captains” regardless of a players’ conference with the draft being broadcast on television. The rosters will be announced on January 24, 2019.

Announcers Marv Albert, Reggie Miller, and Chris Webber will be on the call.

Texas authorities are currently searching for 38-year-old Emily Wade, a missing Harrison County woman who recently moved to Ennis, Texas after she went missing on Saturday, January 5.

What Happened To Emily Wade?

According to reports, Wade — a mother of a 7-year-old daughter who is originally from Cynthiana, Kentucky — has not been seen since she visited co-worker’s house Saturday, January 5 to watch a movie.

Police say that the friend Wade was visiting saw Wade — who currently lives in Ennis, Texas — drive away in her 2012 silver Nissan Altima with a Kentucky license plate around 8:30 p.m. local time. The license plate of Wade’s Altima has a license plate that reads 411PAZ.

Since her disappearance, Wade’s family said they have not heard from her and her cell phone and bank account have not been used.

Speaking to NBC News, Shirley Wade, Emily’s mother, said that she would “bet her life” that her daughter did not “run off”:

“I don’t think she ran off, I would bet my life on that. I’m scared I’ll never see her again alive, and I’ve never said that to anybody else, but I am scared to death,” Wade said.

Additionally, Jared Jones — the father of Emily’s daughter — said that Emily “loves her daughter more than anything in the world”, so he “can’t imagine Wade would ever willingly be apart from her child.”

Shirley Wade said she doesn’t believe Jones had anything to do with the disappearance of her daughter. “I don’t think Jared would ever hurt the mother of his child,” Wade said. “It would shock me.”

Lt. Michael Hopson with the Ennis Police Department said Jones is not a suspect, but no one in the case has been cleared. He said investigators have also spoken with Wade’s coworkers.

Wade has blond hair, is 5’6 and about 140 pounds, police said. She was last seen wearing a peach sweater, blue jeans and sneakers with a peach stripe. Officers asked Ennis residents to look out for her car, a 2012 silver Nissan Altima with Kentucky plates and a broken front bumper.

Who Is Emily Wade?

Police in Texas are currently searching for Emily Wade, 38, after she was last seen on Saturday, January 5 in Ennis, Texas.

There was a frightening incident on the roads in Minnesota. Facebook user Chad Mock was driving down the street when the unthinkable happened. In a video uploaded to Facebook, a toddler can be seen flying out of a moving vehicle.

“If it didn’t happen in front of me I’d never have believed it,” Mock wrote. “The child was ok. The parents came back. Paramedics and police checked the child out as well. Very lucky.”

The toddler, who is two years old, was still strapped to her car seat but flew out of the car after her mother failed to properly fasten the car seat.

People immediately ran onto the street to stop traffic and get the toddler off of the road. Once the mother realized what had happened, she returned to the scene. According to a report from the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, prosecutors are reviewing charges of child endangerment and child restraint not fastened after being forwarded by the police.

Luckily, the child was not injured in the incident as the car seat landed on its side.

Police said the child was fastened into the seat, but not tethered to the vehicle. Investigators are looking into why the door flew open, allowing the car seat to fall out. Police requested charges of child endangerment and child restraint system not fastened against the toddler’s mom. The county attorney’s office said they will review the police report and see if any additional charges are applicable. The Minnesota Department of Human Services will also get a copy of the report.

Luckily Mock was alert and able to immediately stop incoming traffic from getting too close to the child or else the situation could have been a lot worse. And remember, always be sure to properly fasten your child’s car seat.

Professional funny man Jonah Hill is trying something new to stay in shape. In a post on social media, Hill showed the world that he has been hitting the mats for the past couple of months and has been working on his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills.

In fact, while he is still a novice, Hill’s hard work has paid off by earning his first stripe on his white belt.

But it wasn’t easy.

Hill explained his recent journey into the jiu jitsu world with a hilarious story about what motivated him to hit the mats and how he is being humbled in the gym by 12-year-olds.

“I started Brazilian Jiu Jitzu 2 months ago and try and train 4 or 5 times a week. In high school the dudes who did Jiu Jitzu used to beat the shit out of us at parties so it turned me off to it as an idea growing up. But quietly I always thought it was a beautiful art form . At 35 , I try and get over the stuff that made me feel weak and insecure as a teenager. It’s just wasted time and lessons you’ll never learn. Trying to let go of that,” Hill wrote on Instagram.

“Nothing more humbling than getting your ass kicked by a 12 year old your first week. Got my first stripe today. I know it sounds corny but it’s pretty dope to jump in and do stuff you’d never think you’d be able to do.”

Sunita Jairam won’t be winning any Mother of the Year awards anytime soon. The 48-year-old mother from Kentucky found herself in trouble with the law after she made a boneheaded decision and had an even worse explanation for her actions.

Jairam was pulled over and booked in the Fayette County Detention Center after taking her car for a joyride with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.

According to a report from the Lexington Herald-Leader, Jairam had a blood alcohol level of .161. She also told authorities that she had been driving over 150 mph. The worst part of it all? Jairam was in the vehicle with her son and told police that she decided to drive drunk after a full day of drinking to teach her son a lesson.

The incident occurred at 12:51 a.m. on Sunday, January 13, according to the arrest citation.

According to her arrest citation, 48-year-old Sunita Jairam told police she “drank a lot of beer and got in her car to drive to teach her son a lesson.” She also claimed to have driven at 150 mph while the child was in the car. Officers say Jairam smelled of alcohol and was slurring her speech. Jairam also reportedly told investigators that she had been drinking all day. The citation says Jairam’s son told police he had tried to get out of the car several times because of his mother’s driving, but was unable to because the door was locked.

Perhaps the lesson was “what not to do”?

Jairam, who reportedly works as a registered nurse at Baptist Health, was arrested on charges of drunken driving and endangering the welfare of a minor. She had previous offenses for public intoxication and speeding.

Heather Winfield has been identified as the 38-year-old Alpena Public Schools teacher who was arrested and charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct involving children. Winfield was a former at special education teacher at Thunder Bay Junior High School.

According to reports, a joint investigation into Winfield conducted by the Michigan State Police and the Alpena Police Department began in 2016 and concluded in July 2018. Alpena County Prosecutor K. Edward Black said that Winfield taught at Alpena Public Schools from October 2012 until her resignation in November 2016.

Following the investigation, Winfield was charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct 1st degree (involving a child under 13), one count of criminal sexual conduct 1st degree (during the commission of a felony), criminal sexual conduct 3rd degree (child 13-15), criminal sexual conduct 2nd degree (child under 13), accosting a minor for immoral purposes, and using a computer to commit a crime.

Winfield was arraigned in court on Tuesday, January 14, by Judge Thomas J. LaCross. If convicted of her charges, Winfield faces a possible sentence of life in prison.

Alpena Public Schools officials released the following statement following Winfield’s arrest:

“Alpena Public Schools is committed to the safety, security, and quality of the learning environment for all of our students. We will always take proper action in alignment with our board policies and Michigan law to maintain a safe environment for students. Heather Winfield was employed with Alpena Public Schools from October 15, 2012, until her official resignation on November 11, 2016. Alpena Public Schools has cooperated with this investigation from the beginning and will continue to cooperate moving forward. Due to state and federal law protecting student privacy and personnel records, we are unable to share any additional details at this time. Alpena Public Schools is a proud participant with OK2SAY (www.michigan.gov/ok2say). Students and families are encouraged to report any issues that they feel places students or staff members at risk.”

As for why there has been such a significant increase in instances of teachers having inappropriate relationships with students, researchers believe that technology is to blame.

According to a report from the Texas Education Association, smartphones make easy for teachers to privately text and talk with students and also make it possible for teachers and students to share explicit images.

SESAME (Stop Educator Sexual Abuse Misconduct & Exploitation) President Terri Miller echoed that sentiment, stating “before cell phones, we knew who our kids were talking to” but today, “kids have their own phones, they’re taking them to bed, and parents need to watch more.”

Hoffman has been one of many teachers to be charged for inappropriate conduct. Over the course of just a few months, teachers across the United States have been charged, tried, and convicted of various abuse and sex crimes.

The list goes on to include 22-year-old Oklahoma science teacher Hunter Day, 28-year-old teacher Megan Kotarski, 23-year-old history teacher Michelle Schiffer, 29-year-old Alyssia Marie Reddy, special education teacher Jordan Ondish and 28-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick have all been allegedly carrying on inappropriate relationships with their students.

Most recently, teachers such as 29-year-old Haylie Smart, 25-year-old Alaina Ferguson, 26-year-old Amy Nowaczyk, and 32-year-old Laura Bucy were arrested and charged for similar crimes.

Rachael Ostovich is ready for her fight against Paige VanZant on Saturday, January 19. Ostovich is set to face off against Paige VanZant in the UFC women’s flyweight division as they continue to build the weight class.

Ahead of the fight, Ostovich provided an update of how she is looking before the bout.

Ostovich has had her fair share of difficulties leading up to the bout, including some domestic violence insues.

“I felt that it was extremely important to me to follow through with it and not only for me but for my daughter and other people that might be going through similar situations,” Ostovich said, via KHON2 in Hawaii.

“I want to take a stand against domestic violence and show others that it’s okay to come out and speak about it and not be quieted. I’m extremely grateful and blessed for my support system. My family, who has done so much for me and has kept me together and kept me strong. I feel like I have to do this. This is something that can’t be taken away from me. I want to use this big worldwide UFC platform to show people that don’t let anyone or anything come between you and your dreams and your career.”

UFC on ESPN+1 takes place on Saturday, January 19 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. In the main event, UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo welcomes UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw to the division for a superfight that will determine the next 125-pound titleholder.

According to Black Sports Online, “Ms. Sabrina Brazil” worked for an accounting firm after graduating from college but pivoted to becoming a fashion model and influencer and launching an Instagram store. However, Brazil eventually shut down the Instagram store to pursue her Master’s degree.

This isn’t the first IG model that KD has been linked to this year, as he was rumored to be dating Instagram influencer Amy Shebab in early 2019.

To Brazil’s credit, now is probably the time to hop on board the KD train, and he’s likely going to leave the Golden State Warriors this summer and begin to rebuild his PR.

After Marvel Studios and Sony dropped the first full-length trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, everyone was quick to marvel (pun intended) over Spidey’s various new suits or the debut of Jake Gyllenhaal’s admittedly very cool looking Mysterio.

However, as life teaches us time and time again, the devil is in the details, and that sentiment couldn’t be truer when it comes to the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer.

As you may or may not know by know, Spider-Man: Far From Home will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to take place after Avengers: Endgame, meaning the MCU is going to look a whole lot different than it did before. And that new world may mean the departure of some of our favorite old heroes, including Robert Downey Jr’s iconic Tony Stark.

Here’s why.

When the trailer first dropped, my main takeaway was as follows:

“Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man had a major presence in Spider-Man: Homecoming, so his absence from this trailer certainly doesn’t bode well for the fate of everyone’s favorite genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist.”

Well, unfortunately, it turns out my gut reaction was probably right, as the Twitter detectives of the world dug a little bit deeper to find whatever clues they can. And what they did find, as previously predicted, does not bode well for ole’ Tony.

Look, whether you want to admit it or not, Tony Stark dying has always been the most likely outcome of the Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame arc. Not only has he been in the MCU since the beginning in 2008, but he is also the heart and soul of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning his death (and likely the death of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, too) would be more impactful and emotional than the death of literally any other character.

However, with that said, the realization that Tony Stark is actually dead is much, much sadder than I expected it to be. Nevertheless, if he does bow out, we know it will be in truly epic and heroic Tony Stark fashion.

Avengers: Endgame will be released in theaters on April 26, 2019, while Spider-Man: Far From Home drops on July 5, 2019.

“I wrote this track with Jonah Stevens who also did some co-production on my latest EP Slow Clap. It’s got a playful vibe to it that I haven’t really explored that much before,” she told Complex.

“Songwriting is constantly helping me work through my emotions and this one is about being in a long distance relationship. It’s important to realise that your feelings aren’t always obvious to the other person, sometimes you have to remind them.”

She tries to bring a laidback, minimalist approach to music, but also tries to focus on her lyrical ability.

“It’s about those initial stages of meeting someone new and being intoxicated with them,” Ayelle she said in an interview. “You then become blind to their flaws and think that there’s nothing that you’d want to change, which usually doesn’t turn out to be the case. It’s sweet and naive but hopeful, that there might be a person who you wouldn’t want to change, and that could share your space without invading it.”

When writing a headline for an article, writers and editors are usually taught to avoid using the term “best”. First and foremost, because “best” is simply a boring adjective, and second, because what’s “best” is merely subjective.

However, when I say this video of a Colorado firefighter breaking out a full Army crawl to rescue this good boy from the depths of a frozen lake is the best video you’ll watch all week, I mean it quite literally: there will not be a better video to circulate on the internet in the next seven days. That much I can promise you that.

“‘Bri’ is one lucky pup. The crew from Firehouse 34 was quick to arrive with a rescuer already dressed in a dry suit. The team on shore held his safety rope tightly and the Dive Team was also responding, just in case. All SMFR fire engines are equipped for ice rescues.”

This was not the only recent pupper rescue mission that the South Metro Fire Rescue had to pull off, as good boy Ray became the second dog in just three days to fall into an icy pond.

“Meet Ray, the 2nd dog in just 3 days saved from an icy pond by South Metro Firefighters. Ray was distracted by geese, jumped a backyard fence, gave chase onto the thin ice and fell through. Ray was reunited with her human cold, wet and thankfully not injured.”

Speaking to The Denver Post, Eric Hurst, a spokesman for the South Metro Fire Rescue said that “at least several times a year we will respond to dogs slipping through the ice.”

Luckily, thanks to the courage and professionalism of the South Metro Fire Rescue, neither Bri nor Ray were seriously injured and have resumed their lives as good boys and girls.
