WATCH: UFC’s Jared Gordon Involved In Street Fight With Gang Members, Nearly Loses 3 Fingers

UFC fighter Jared Gordon was minding his own business ahead of his most recent outing inside of the Octagon, when he found himself involved in a street fight with two members of a local gang. According to Gordon, he was outside of a barbershop waiting his turn when two members of the GS9 Crips in New York approached him and his friend.

The gang members spit on Gordon’s friend before throwing a sucker punch.

After the first swing from the assailants, Gordon jumped into action and quickly showed the gang members that they were messing with the wrong group of guys.

Eventually, the fight was separated and everyone went their own way, but it almost turned out to be an awful situation for Gordon. Gordon and the man he was fighting crashed through a store window and the glass came showering down. Because of the glass flying, Gordon suffered serious cuts on his hand that he says nearly cost him three fingers.

Here is video of the altercation:

The cuts required 21 stitches.

“I have never brought this up before, because I am not one to make excuses and I don’t want to make it look like I am making excuses,” Gordon said, via Bloody Elbow. “I took the fight because I didn’t want to pull out. I had missed weight before in my first fight, and this was my third fight — the last thing that I wanted to do was pull out and have it look like I was having weight cutting problems again or make it look like I am unreliable,” he added.

“I had a terrible training camp because I couldn’t spar or wrestle or do jiu-jitsu,” he said. “All I did was run and shadow box and kick the bag for the whole fight camp, because I had one hand. Hats off to Diego; he did what he had to do. Nothing against him. But, I just think that if the fight camp didn’t go down the way it did, [the fight] would be different. It is what it is.”

Unfortunately for Gordon, at UFC Fight Night 126 he saw his five-fight winning streak come to an end after suffering a TKO loss to Carlos Diego Ferreira in the first round. Hopefully he will have the opportunity to get back in the cage soon and return to the win column.

Vanderbilt University Investigating White Supremacy Email Sent To Students & Staff Members

Vanderbilt University is currently investigating a racist email advocating white supremacy that was sent out to students and staff members, with the scholl detailing the incident on social media.

What happened?

The Vanderbilt University NAACP chapter posted a screenshot of the email on Twitter:

“Your command: SUBSCRIBE HITS_DIRS F*** ALL [n-word]!!! White pride at Vanderbilt and worldwide!”

The email then asked readers to click on a link or reply to the message in order to “confirm the execution of your command.” On the same Twitter post, the school’s NAACP chapter issued the following response:

“The white nationalist email blast that was sent out to many Black Students tonight is yet ANOTHER reprehensible display of how racism and hatred is ingrained into Vanderbilt culture”

The source of the email is currently under investigation

Early Tuesday morning, the school issued the following series of statements on its official Twitter account, adding that the email was not issued by the school and that the source of the email was still under investigation.

“On the evening of July 30, some Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff received a deeply disturbing email that contained racist language and promoted white supremacy. It violates our fundamental commitment to fostering an inclusive community and is absolutely unacceptable.”

“Please be aware that Vanderbilt IT is actively working to determine the source of and stop the dissemination of this email. The fact that the communication was NOT an official Vanderbilt University email or correspondence does not diminish the pain that it has caused.”

“At this point, VUIT can confirm the link in the email does not download a virus. However, out of an abundance of caution, we recommend that the recipients not respond to the email and simply delete it.”

“Again, we condemn this despicable communication and reaffirm Vanderbilt’s commitment to the success and positive affirmation of all.”

In addition, the school has also issued the following statement concerning the original email on its official website:

“Late last night, we became aware that a deeply disturbing email containing racist language and promoting white supremacy was sent to members of the Vanderbilt community. The language and sentiment contained in this message are abhorrent and antithetical to our values as a university community. We condemn this message and the tactics of sowing distrust, division and hatred that it employs. Equity, diversity and inclusion are bedrock values of the Vanderbilt community.”

“Vanderbilt IT has been working through the night and continues today to identify the source of this email and to stop its dissemination and that of any further such emails. VUIT believes this effort was an external attack designed to look like an official Vanderbilt email. Out of an abundance of caution, do not click on any links in the email or respond to it. VUPD is also aware of and tracking this issue. The fact that the communication was NOT an official Vanderbilt University email or correspondence does not diminish the pain that it has caused to members of the Vanderbilt community.”

Facebook Plane React: How To Get Emoji & Must-See Details

Facebook has released a new react emoji: a plane reaction emoji that first appeared to Facebook users on July 31. At this time, the plane react emoji is already confirmed to work on Android. During the time of its release, there were also reports of a few similar new reaction emojis released around the same time, too.

How do you get the new emoji?

You’ll first need to update your Facebook app if you do not already have the latest version. Just go to Settings under the Google Play store. This should give you the option to auto-update apps. Also, remember that data charges may apply.

Once you have the latest version of the app, make sure you clear cache. Once you do this, the plane reaction should be presented as one of your options when you hold down on the thumbs up or like emoji. According to 8Shit, some users see an angry face emoji instead of a plane emoji; if that is the case, hit the second angry face and the plane emoji will be added, although you might have to repeat the process to get the plane emoji again.

Is the plane react emoji the only surprise?

According to a Reddit discussion concerning the new emoji, there have been people claiming that there is also a new fire reaction emoji that has been found by people looking for the new plane react emoji.

Some of these users have shared screenshots of this mysterious new emoji, with multiple users supposedly confirming its existence, but it is unconfirmed if it has been released at this time. Due to the screenshots, it is unlikely that people were mistakenly referring to the angry face emoji as a fire react emoji. In addition, some users claimed that they were able to have both the plane and fire react emojis.

10-Year-Old ‘Superman’ Clark Kent Beats Michael Phelps’ 23-Year-Old Record

CNN

When you are born with a name like Clark Kent, you are expected to do great things. That is exactly what this 10-year-old “Superman” swimmer from California has accomplished in his young life. Clark, whose full name is Clark Kent Apuada, swims for the Monterey County Aquatic Team and was competing in the Far West International Championship in California when he made headlines.

See, the 10-year-old won the 100m butterfly in an impressive time of 1:09:38.

What makes the time even more impressive? The mark tops a 23-year-old record held by one of the all-time swimming greats, Olympian Michael Phelps.

Immediately after he topped the record, people were running to praise the swimming prodigy.

“This kid is unlike any other young man that I’ve ever coached,” Clark’s coach Dia Riana told CNN. “He’s always stood out, he’s just, he’s kind of a savant of sorts.”

Clark Kent, a 10-year-old from California nicknamed "Superman," is making headlines for beating a record held by retired Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps: https://t.co/egESUggolr pic.twitter.com/PXgHu8ZYA7

— CNN Sport (@cnnsport) July 31, 2018

As you would expect from such an impressive young man, he kicks ass at everything he does.

“He does piano lessons, he does martial arts, and at school if there’s a computer class, coding, or STEM programs he’s always joining,” his father, Chris Apuada, added.

Clark definitely lives up to his nickname, and will be a swimmer to watch in the future. And if you were still wondering: Yes, his name was intentional, according to a brief profile from the Huffington Post.

Asked about the champion swimmer’s unusual name, she said she’d always loved the name Clark. And her husband’s favorite superhero just happened to be Superman. So when their child was born, they decided to give him the name “Clark Kent.”

The nickname “Superman” emerged naturally.

“We’re always just telling people his name is Clark. But when they realize his full name, people just call him Superman,” Apuada said.

It fits, she said, since her son “is regarded as a superman in the water.”

Pittsburgh Panthers Football 2018-19: Predictions & Preview

$

Shutterstock

With a shocking win in last year’s season finale against Miami, Pitt comes into the 2018 season riding some momentum. That win proved that Pitt was a lot more talented than that five win, seven loss record they had to show for. While expectations will be held in check for the Panthers, thanks to one of the most challenging non-conference schedules in the entire nation, if Pitt can steal one of those games, the road back to an eight-win season seems plausible and a showdown with Clemson for a BCS bid is far closer than just a dream.

2018-2019 Summary

Instagram Photo

Coming off another disappointing year, Pat Narduzzi’s group is poised to make some noise in 2018. They will be put in the gauntlet in their non-conference games with matchups against Penn State, UCF, and Notre Dame. If they can pass one of these challenging tests, their road back to an eight-win season is doable. The ACC is talent-depleted, leaving an opening for another team to step up and give Clemson a real threat. In the weaker Coastal division, the likely challenger to stop Clemson’s run will either be Miami, Virginia Tech, or Pitt. Pittsburgh is definitely improving under coach Narduzzi, but Virginia Tech and Miami are still the alphas in this weaker division and both will likely get by Pitt. With that said, going from 5-7 to 8-4 would be a huge accomplishment for the Panthers and would ensure this is a team to take note of for the next five seasons.

Record: Wins 8, Losses 4

Week 1: Pittsburgh 34, Albany 7 (W)
Week 2: Pittsburgh 21, Penn State 27 (L)
Week 3: Pittsburgh 30, Georgia Tech, 24 (W)

A task for deployed by the University of Missouri task force released a sweeping report Tuesday on how to fix what one consultant had called a dysfunctional and dangerous Greek system.

The task force released an 18-page report of recommendations of how the Greek life community can eliminate systemic issues of hazing, drinking and substance abuse.

The task force, which was commissioned by Gary Ward, MU’s interim vice chancellor for student affairs, suggested a three-tier system in which only high-performing fraternities can house live-in freshmen, no punishments for Greek students who report hazing within their organizations and limits on social events with alcohol.

via Kansas City Star:

The advisory council was tasked with finding solutions for issues that include hazing, diversity and inclusion, risky social practices, academics, recruitment and the question of whether freshmen should be permitted to live off campus in chapter houses.

More than 7,200 students at Mizzou participate in Greek organizations governed by four groups: the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Panhellenic Association. Representatives from all four organizations served on the council, which met throughout the spring semester.

“With these proposed changes, I am optimistic that we can keep fraternities and sororities safe and begin to build a stronger Greek community,” said Jake Eovaldi, president of the Interfraternity Council, which governs more than two dozen fraternities at Mizzou.

The task force recommendations comes months after Brandon Zingale, a former University of Missouri freshman who was hospitalized in September 2016 due to alcohol poisoning, sued the university’s Kappa Alpha fraternity for hazing.

Millennials are always getting mocked for majoring in things like Liberal Arts, Gender Studies, and other vague programs while pursuing their college degree. But did you know there are much more niche areas of study? Well, there are, so tell your grumpy old grandpa to let you enjoy your degree in English because you could be having an even harder time looking for a job if you made a different choice.

There are programs out there Adventure Education, Citrus, and Bagpiping that allow you to enjoy what you love while taking in the college experience, but also leave you with a very small job market and have your friends saying, “You majored in what?!”

So what are some of the most bizarre and unique college majors across the country?

The top 10 weirdest college majors can be seen below.

10. Bowling Industry Management and Technology, Vincennes University

No, this major isn’t at Bowling Green University, but it is perfect for anyone who really likes to spend their free time at the bowling alley. The thrilling major offers courses like Lane and Pinsetter Maintenance, Pro Shop Operations, and Bowling Lanes Management. Never again will you have to pay to rent your bowling shoes for a nice night on the lanes.

As for who is responsible for the major, take your questions and concerns to Vincennes University

9. Floral Management, Mississippi State University

Mississippi State offers a number of programs, but if you’re struggling to figure out what you want to major in, why not check out their Floral Management degree. It will teach you all about “sourcing, purchasing, distributing, marketing, designing with, and selling floricultural products.”

Throughout the program, you will get first-hand professional work thanks to The University Florist, a professional flower shop owned and operated by the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences on the MSU Campus.

Then you can be your best friend’s go-to wedding and bridal design planner if you get snubbed as a bridesmaid.

8. Bagpiping, Carnegie Mellon University

This is pretty self-explanatory. There are a number of music education programs across the country and different disciplines that you can study, but Carnegie Mellon takes the cake by offering up a Bagpiping program. If you end up completing the program, you can have the distinction of being a very qualified… bagpipe teacher?

If bagpiping isn’t your thing, Carnegie Mellon can also help you out with your goals as a euphonium, guitar, and saxophone teacher.

7. Fermentation Science, Appalachian State University

Appalachian State once beat Michigan on a last-second blocked field goal. But it looks like they’ve been stepping their game up since then. We all know the students partied hard after the unlikely upset, so maybe that’s how they came up with the “Fermentation Sciences” program. The program helps you understand “food and beverage production” while digging deep into wine and brewing systems.

Core classes include:

  • Principles of Fermentation Science
  • Social Implications of Fermented Beverages
  • Viticulture: Vine Physiology and Vineyard Establishment
  • Facility Design and Operation
  • Wine Production and Analysis
  • Brewing Science and Analysis
  • Sensory Analysis of Wine and Beer

6. Citrus, Florida Southern College

We get it. Florida is the Sunshine State and they produce some pretty delicious oranges, but Florida Southern College has taken things to the next level by offering a degree in Citrus. That’s right, you can study how to plant, grow, and manage your favorite fruits and come away with a college degree.

“We have the nation’s only bachelor’s degree program specifically in citrus and is known throughout Florida’s citrus industry for the quality of our program,” the university states. And we aren’t surprised.

Mama has never been prouder.

5. Beatles, Popular Music, & Society, Liverpool Hope University

Instagram Photo

We have to start this off by saying that the program is offered at Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom, because that explains everything. But in this program, you get to sit around and listen to The Beatles. The course is officially supposed to “examine the significance of the music of The Beatles in the construction of identities, audiences, ethnicities and industries, and localities,” but it’s also perfect for people who want to show up to class stoned and reminisce about the good ole days.

If your goal in life is to be a “Beatles Historian,” this is the perfect program for you.

4. Foresight, Houston

Hindsight is 20/20, but Foresight is apparently a Master of Science program at the University of Houston. You may be asking yourself: “Is Foresight some sort of psychic program?” Well, kind of. The program goal is to help “clients and employers anticipate significant changes that lie ahead and to influence those changes to achieve their long-term goals.”

Is your instructor Miss Cleo?

3. Adventure Education, Plymouth State University

Instagram Photo

If you like working outdoors, Plymouth State has the perfect major for you. And while it may not be “weird” to enjoy activities like kayaking or rock climbing, it is a bit questionable that a university would set aside curriculum for such a major. But hey, whatever you have to do to get by.

From the course description:

So, as an Adventure Education major, you will be leading backpacking expeditions, facilitating a ropes course, climbing rocks, ascending alpine summits, and paddling rivers for three reasons-first to learn the professional and technical skills to operate competently and safely in these environments, second to learn how to instruct others in these adventure activities, and third to learn how to frame these experiences so that your clients and students grow personally and professionally.

2. Packaging Science, Clemson

I won’t lie. At first, I thought this program simply taught you how to pack up a truck or UHAUL if you had to get on the move. But as it turns out, it’s even simpler than that. In the Packaging Science program, you learn how to, well, package all sorts of different products.

“Packaging science majors first complete basic course work in science and math before delving into the intricacies of packaging design, materials, polymers and distribution. A strong science and math background is essential for success,” Clemson’s website reads.

1. Auctioneering, Harrisburg Area Community College

The weirdest major right now has to be Auctioneering. After all, what are you going to learn? Are you really going to college to learn how to speak fast? That seems to be exactly what is going on at Harrisburg area Community College with the course description reading, “Do you want to learn the auction ‘chant’ and sell at least 70 items per minute? If you do, you may be well-suited to work as an auctioneer or for a licensed auctioneer. Take some time to read below and learn more about how you can obtain a diploma in auctioneering.”

Just have a yard sale or something, and save your money.

Jorja Alice Smith, June 11, 1997, is a British singer known for her highly successful EP Project 11, which was released in 2016.

Since breaking through in 2016, Smith has since collaborated with artists such as Drake, Stormzy, and Kali Uchis. In June 2018, released her debut studio album Lost & Found. Also in 2018, Smith won the Brit Critics’ Choice Award.

Smith is from Walsall, West Midlands in England. Her first release came when she was just eighteen years old when she uploaded her song “Blue Lights” to SoundCloud in January 2016. Following the release of “Blue Lights”, Smith released “Project 11” — a 4-track EP covering a variety of matters and musical styles — later in 2016.

In 2017, Smith appeared on the track “Jorja’s Interlude” on Drake’s album More Life. At the 2017 MOBO Awards, Smith was nominated in the best female category.

When discussing her debut studio album, which was released on June 8, 2018, Smith told Exclaim!:

“It was never like, ‘Okay, I’m going to take three years to create an album.’ I just write songs. As much as I love plans and stuff, when it comes to music — same as how I do my EP — they just happened. I made them, and then I was like, ‘I want to put out an EP,’ ‘Oh, these songs will go well together, so I’m going to put them together.’ That’s what happened with the album, it just came to a point where I thought, ‘I think this year is a good year to put out an album, because people are watching me.”

At just 21-years-old, Jorja Smith has nowhere to go but up.

Grading The Biggest Trades At The MLB Deadline

The 2018 MLB Trade Deadline has been one of the craziest in recent memory. Multiple All-Stars changed teams in the last hour before the deadline closed. Chris Archer, Jonathan Schoop, Brian Dozier and Wilson Ramos all changed colors by 4:00 EST today. But which move was truly the best?

Chris Archer

Instagram Photo

The Pirates made the most shocking move of the day, going out and getting the former Rays All-Star. He’s affordable, as he’s under control for the next four years, but the Pirates paid a very high price. The Pirates gave up two of their top five prospects in pitcher Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Austin Meadows, who are also ranked in Baseball America’s Top 100. This move is a little puzzling for the Bucs, who are sitting seven games out of the second wild-card spot. They have played better than expected this season, but this might be a move for the future more than the present.

Grade: C+

Jonathan Schoop

Instagram Photo

This is a complicated trade, as it looks good on the surface, but there are a few factors to navigate. The Brewers already made a move for third baseman Mike Moustakas a few days ago. They also currently have Travis Shaw, who they moved to second base for Moustakas. Now enter Schoop, an All-Star second baseman who is a very similar hitter to Shaw. For a few mid-level prospects, and one MLB level player in Jonathan Villar. This has the potential to be a great trade, and Schoop can be a high impact bat, but an overcrowded infield could make things very complicated in the long run for Milwaukee, who have shown that they want to go all in with this team.

Grade: C

Brian Dozier

Instagram Photo

Speaking of teams that want to go all in, the Dodgers are 1000% in for 2018, they made the blockbuster trade for Manny Machado, and they’ve made another acquisition of a high impact rental piece with Dozier. He hasn’t hit as well as he usually does this season, only .224, but he came at a cheap price. The Dodgers gave up a few mid-level prospects, but it’s nothing their deep farm system can’t handle. Dozier has a powerful bat at second base and could end up being a key cog in a World Series push for the Dodgers.

Grade: B-

Wilson Ramos

Instagram Photo

The Phillies got an impact bat at a premier defensive position. The Phillies have one of the worst defenses in the MLB, which Ramos will surely help, but he’s also having the best season of his career. He’s currently on the DL with a hamstring strain, but he should be back soon. Ramos is hitting .296 this year with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs. Phillies catchers as a whole are hitting .244 this year. The Buffalo, as he’s known around the league, should help the surprising Phillies try to widen their lead in the NL East.

College Football Insider Brett McMurphy Releases Text Messages Concerning Urban Meyer Allegations

Brett McMurphy, a college football insider, best known for his work with ESPN, CBSSports.com, AOL FanHouse, The Tampa Tribune and The Odessa American, has claimed to have collected text messages that suggest Ohio State coach Urban Meyer knew of domestic abuse allegations against a member of his coaching staff back in 2015. In addition, McMurphy also claims to have conducted an exclusive interview with the victim.

What happened in the text messages?

As described in the following Facebook post, McMurphy described how Meyer claimed to have no prior knowledge of allegations concerning former Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith:

“Meyer said last week during Big Ten Media Days that he had no knowledge of two alleged domestic violence incidents in 2015 with former assistant wide receivers coach Zach Smith that were investigated by the Powell (Ohio) Police Department.”

“Meyer said had he known, he would have fired Smith in 2015 – three years before he did last week after I reported the alleged domestic violence.”

As the post continued, McMurphy noted that, had school officials been aware of the situation, it could be in violation of Title IX, which states: discrimination on the basis of sex, which includes sexual harassment, abuse and even rape. McMurphy then quoted Courtney Smith, former Smith’s ex-wife, who gave her side of the story, in addition to having provided text messages:

“All the (coaches) wives knew…They all did. Every single one.”

As McMurphy went on in the Facebook post, there appears to be evidence that more than just the coach’s wives knew what was going on:

“However, text messages I have obtained sent from Courtney Smith, Meyer’s wife Shelley; and other Ohio State coaches’ wives show Urban Meyer and a number of Ohio State assistant coaches were aware of Smith’s domestic violence issues for several years.”

“Courtney said Shelley Meyer, Urban’s wife of nearly three decades, knew about the abuse that begin in 2009, continued in 2015 and culminated with Zach Smith being served a domestic violence civil protection order last week.”

“Courtney said she and Shelly often discussed Zach’s domestic violence.”

What do the text messages have to say?

The text messages that McMurphy obtained for the Facebook post could be read below:

Shelley: “I am with you! A lot of women stay hoping it will get better. I don’t blame you! But just want u to be safe. Do you have a restraining order? He scares me”

Courtney: “Restraining orders don’t do anything in Ohio-I tried to get protection order which is what started this whole investigation. And that should go through soon finally. It’s hard bc you have to prove immediate danger. Legal system is tough. Basically you have to prove he will kill u to get protective order”

Shelley: “Geesh! Even w the pics? Didn’t law enforcement come to your place ever??”

In addition to screenshots of the text messages, as seen above, McMurphy also released photos relating to the story, which can also be seen above. Many of them depict bruises on Courtney’s body, particularly around he arm, as well as one photo showing blood oozing out of cuts on her hand.

As this story is developing, more information will be updated as made available.
