Conor McGregor Dishes On When & Where His Next Fight Will Be

WATCH: 'Notorious' Teaser #1 Video, Conor McGregor Documentary

Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images

This November will mark a whole TWO years since Conor McGregor’s last in the UFC.

While fans got to see the spectacle of him boxing Floyd Mayweather in August of 2017, it’s closing in on a full 24 months since the world’s greatest (or at least most entertaining) mixed martial artist stepped into the Octagon. And let’s face it, MMA is far more exciting than boxing.

But that all may change soon enough now that McGregor’s New York City lawsuit is settled after he smashed the windows of a bus carrying UFC fighters leading up to UFC 223 in Brooklyn.

Speaking to TMZSports reports (because, obviously, those dudes are like gnats), McGregor — in classic McGregor fashion — given some pretty insightful details into his future with the UFC.

When asked if a deal for a fight was close, McGregor replied that “it’s not official but we’re close”. Furthermore, when asked if it would be going down in 2018, McGregor said “I believe so, I hope so. I’m pushing for it.”

via Uproxx:

Negotiations between the UFC and McGregor had been stalled out ever since the Irish superstar and a group of his gym teammates stormed the Barclays Center leading up to UFC 223 in April, smashing the windows of a bus bringing UFC fighters back to their hotel. McGregor was attempting to get to Dagestani fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, who had slapped Conor’s close friend Artem Lobov in a confrontation earlier that week. Now that the UFC knows McGregor isn’t about to be barred from entering America, a deal can be made for him to fight Nurmagomedov in a proper, legal fashion.

As for where the fight will take place, McGregor said that while he loves New York City, odds are the fight goes down in Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I love New York City, to be able to be here a free man, walking around this place,” he said. “What a city! We’ll see what happens. I’d love to fight in [Madison Square] Garden again, but I believe this one is in Las Vegas.”

Personally, I think this is a major misfire by the UFC. I was in Midtown Manhattan the night of UFC 205 and it was a true spectacle.

After beat McGregor beat Eddie Alvarez to win his second belt, Seventh Ave was completely shut down due to fans celebrating in the streets, climbing lamp posts, and singing Irish folk songs. Every bar nearby was packed to the brim. It was a special, borderline magical sports night that can only be had in New York City and the UFC is missing a huge opportunity by not bringing McGregor back to the Garden for his UFC return.

Facebook & Instagram Are Helping You Curb Your Social Media Addiction

Due to increasing criticism from the public regarding their deliberately addictive interfaces, social media sites Facebook and Instagram will now be adding dashboards and other tools to help you track and manage your account usage. Worries about “overdosing” on social media have been becoming serious concerns in recent history, and Facebook and Instagram are convinced their newest additions will help mitigate that problem. Among other new features, you will be able to set reminders to notify you when you’ve spent too much time scrolling as well as view your personally calculated average time spent on the app.

The update will be located under “Your time spent on Facebook” on Facebook and “My activity” on Instagram. Screenshots of what the new features will look like can be viewed here and the features are expected to officially roll out within the next couple of week.

How To Use Features On Facebook And Instagram

On Facebook, tap the button with three vertical lines (the hamburger menu), which is located in the bottom right corner of the app if you’re using it on your phone. You can then scroll down the menu until you find the “Your time on Facebook option.”

On Instagram, tap the settings menu represented by the gear icon on your profile and scroll until you see the “My activity” option.

You will then be met with a bar graph denoting how much time you have spent in the app over the course of the week. You can click on each bar to see the precise amount of time you’ve spent if you’re curious. Next, you can choose between different 5-minute usage intervals according to how much time you wish to spend on the app, selecting the one that best fits your social media consumption. As soon as you’ve hit your selected time, you’ll be sent a notification reminding you to take a break.

You can still keep using the app of course, just like hitting “snooze” on your alarm clock.

Finally, Instagram and Facebook are equipping their sites with an option to mute notifications for certain periods of time. Before you were allowed to mute notifications, but now you will be able to decide for how long you want your notifications muted.

Ameet Ranadive, an Instagram employee leading a team of researchers dedicated to the user’s well-being, asserted that “It’s really important for people that use Instagram and Facebook to feel like the time that they spend with us is time well spent. That’s the whole purpose of this release.”

Naturally, the social media sites are aware of the potential damage these releases could have on their revenue but say they remain committed to encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

Said Ranadive, According to The Verge, “We want to empower people to make intentional decisions about how much time they spend, and how they want to engage with the app…  There may be some trade-off with other metrics for the company. That’s a trade-off that we’re willing to live with. In the long run this is something that’s important for the community, and something we want to invest in.”

Power Ranking The Late Night Drunk Foods

The typical night out — no matter who you are, where you grew up, or what college you go/went to — is relatively the same for everyone.

You pregame with your buddies, listen to music (whatever type of music that gets you hyped — hip-hop, rock, country, or otherwise), drink a couple beers (via drinking games or otherwise) and put down a couple of shots. Sounds pretty familiar, right?

Then you head to the bar where you continue to drink, make a couple of laps to dap up all your buddies and scope out some prospects, and either head to the dance floor or post up with the squad somewhere. Pretty status quo stuff.

Now, at the end of the night is where paths can diverge down two very different roads:

Road #1: Getting Laid

Road #2: Not Getting Laid

Hopefully, you’ve been down Road #1, so I don’t need to give you the play by play, but sometimes Road #2 can be just as satisfying (not really, sex > food, but bear with me for the sake of the article), and that’s largely due to the late night drunk food we ultimately stuff our face with at the end of the night

But which late-night drunk food is top dog?

5. Munchie Foods (Chips, Candy, Chocolate, etc)

Shutterstock

The only not-hot food on this list, munchie foods are the bare bones when it comes to late-night drunk eating. Don’t get me wrong, munchie food absolutely serves a purpose, but that purpose is supposed to be when you’re stoned, not when you’re drunk.

Is it acceptable to chow down on some chips, candy, and chocolate when you get home from the bar? Absolutely, but regardless, hot food remains king.

4. Chicken Fingers & Fries

Shutterstock

One of the rare times in life that ordering chicken fingers doesn’t seem childish is when you get home from a night at the bar.

Chicken fingers and fries are the ol’ reliable of drunk food: not too flashy but major step up from whatever you have lying around your pantry and fridge.

3. Burger & Fries

Shutterstock

Going to a diner after a night of drinking and ordering a cheeseburger with fries (and a milkshake if you’re feeling frisky) is about as American as wearing an all-camouflage outfit while you drink a beer, watch college football, and listen to Bruce Springsteen: it’s just right.

2. Burrito/Tacos

Shutterstock

More specifically, Taco Bell. I don’t know what it is about the combination of the devil’s water and The Golden Bell, but something about these two body-poisons together just compliments the other. Especially when you consider the fact that you can get approximately 5 pounds of food at Taco Bell for about 4 bucks.

However, if you have burgers pegged above burritos in your power rankings, I wouldn’t blame you for it in the slightest, your boy just so happens to be a big fan of Mexican food.

1. Pizza

Shutterstock

Was there any question that pizza was going to land in the top spot?

The Jack Nicholson/Meryl Streep of late night eats, pizza is a LEGEND of the drunk food game. Cheap, easily accessible, but above all, delicious — pizza is the undisputed king of drunk food. From Idaho to New York City, if there’s a bar in town, there’s probably a pizza spot nearby.

NC State Wolfpack Football 2018-19: Predictions & Preview

Football is a game of opportunity, where new stars step up to the plate each and every season. NC State had one of the best defenses a year ago, thanks to all-world pass rusher Bradley Chubb, the fifth overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft. Seven other starters from this stout defense have also said there goodbye’s, leaving the fate of the Wolfpack to fall on some unfamiliar faces. Offensively, there may not be a better receiving core in the nation, and the defense-first approach may need to change in coach Dave Doeren’s system.

2018-2019 Summary

Instagram Photo

With Dave Doeren’s decision to reject big name schools like Tennesse to stay with the Wolfpack, NC State should see similar success to that of the 2017 season. After going 9-4 a year ago, with three of those losses coming by seven or fewer points, the Wolfpack are poised to get back to that nine-win mark. Also returning will be quarterback Ryan Finley, who will have a chance to take advantage of one of the most reliable offensive lines and receiving cores in all of college football. The loss of eight starters will hurt on defense, but now we will see just how good of a recruiter Dave Doeren is.

The out-of-conference game to watch will be the week three matchup against West Virginia. The Mountaineers will be led by star quarterback and potential first overall pick, Will Grier. With him at the helm of things once again, WVU should have a terrific season and will have a slight advantage over the Wolfpack and their depleted defense that will likely still be figuring things out early in the year. If Doeren’s group does pull through and get that win, there is a good shot both NC State and Clemson will be undefeated in their week eight matchup. Their last test will be against a Florida State team that is a bit of an unknown right now, and that game looks like a coin flip. All in all nine wins seems about right for NC State, with the potential for ten or eleven, and possibly a BCS bid.

Record: Wins 9, Losses 3

Week 1: NC State 34, James Madison 21 (W)
Week 2: NC State 42, Georgia State 13 (W)
Week 3: NC State 24, West Virginia 31 (L)

New Study Says Adults Spend Almost Half The Day Looking At A Screen

Yikes. I mean, I knew people had a sick addiction to media, but when you see the actual statistics on paper, it’s kind of shocking.

According to the report by the data analytics firm Nielson based in New York City, adults (aged 18-34) now spend ELEVEN HOURS A DAY looking at a screen, otherwise known as essentially half the day. While I’m about the further thing from a scientist, I’m relatively confident that looking into an artifical light for 50% of your dad is definitely not good for your eyes (and maybe brain?) in the long run.

via Daily Mail:

In total, US adults watched almost six hours a day during the first quarter of 2018. This includes any video footage viewed on a television, TV-connected device, laptop or computer, as well as video-focused app or website on a smartphone or tablet. Compared with the previous report by Nielson, this viewing time was an increase of 11 minutes, with six of those minutes stemming from TV-connected devices.

TV-connected devices are third-party set-top boxes that allow access to video streaming services, like Google Chromecast, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV. In total, two-thirds of all US households now own separate streaming devices capable of beaming video content to the TV set, the report found.

According to the 2018 Nielsen Total Audience Report, young adults aged 18 to 34 spent the largest percentage of time using TV-connected and digital devices.

“The way people consume content is vastly different from what it was five years ago, let alone 10 or 20,” said Peter Katsingris, Senior Vice President of Audience Insights.

So, let me get this straight: if we look at screens for eleven hours per day and sleep for another eight, that leaves just five hours a day that our eyes are doing something other than ingesting blue light or being completely closed.

But what exactly do we do for the five hours that we aren’t looking at some sort of screen? Cook? Shower? Even taking a dump doesn’t count anymore, as sitting on the bowl is as good of a time as any to stare at your phone.

Top 10 Richest Directors On Earth Right Now

Richest Directors

Shutterstock

While for most the main draw to the box office are the actors or movie premise; when it comes to these iconic directors they can create just as much if not more buzz. Everyone on this list has been behind some of the most influential films ever, and the wealth they have attained from these efforts is certainly a reflection of that. By considering the movies these people have made and the income that they attained from their work we break down the top to richest working directors today, and how they got to be that way.

10. Christopher Nolan Net Worth: $180 Million

Christopher Nolan

Shutterstock

One of my favorite directors on this list, I can’t think of a single bad movie Nolan has directed, as every film he does is consistently original as well as having major box office appeal. He is most well known for the Dark Knight trilogy, which are some of the highest grossing films ever and certainly contributed to his huge net worth. Recently though, he also directed Dunkirk where he is said to have gotten $20 million up front, as well as 20% of the overall gross, and with the film being incredibly successful Nolan has quickly become one of the highest paid directors of all time.

(Tie) 9. Roland Emmerich Net Worth: $200 Million

Roland Emmerich

If you don’t know his name you’ll certainly recognize some of his films which include Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and a whole bunch of other films that have the word “day” in them and are about the end of the world. His films are said to have had a total income of over $3 billion worldwide, and by taking just a small fraction of that he has been able to attain the huge amounts of wealth that he has today.

(Tie) 8. Ridley Scott Net Worth: $200 Million

Ridley Scott

Shutterstock

Considered to be a pioneer when it comes to sci-fi, horror and the merging of these two genres, odds are if you’re a science fiction fan you’ve probably come across some of Scott’s work. He was the mind behind classics like Alien and Blade Runner and more recent hits as well such as The Martian. This combined with his impressive work in other genres with films such as Gladiator and Thelma & Louise is what has made him such an icon and earned him a spot on this list.

7. Francis Ford Coppola Net Worth: $300 Million

Francis Ford Coppola

Shutterstock

If you’re a film buff you are probably more than familiar with this man and maybe even idolize him a little bit, as Francis Ford Coppola is the person responsible for all three Godfather movies. Widely considered to be some of, if not the best films of all time, as director of The Godfather trilogy Coppola has become a household name and has the net worth to reflect that. He has directed a few other classics as well such as Apocalypse Now and The Outsiders, and while he hasn’t done much recently he really doesn’t have to with all the money he has earned over the course of his career.

6. Michael Bay Net Worth: $430 million

Michael Bay Net Worth

Shutterstock

A master of explosions, hot ladies, and fast cars, Michale Bay has built his career off of making movies that are by dudes for dudes. He has made every Transformers movie to date, and while their ratings have steadily been decreasing their revenue has not!… Well, actually their revenue has decreased a little too, but obviously not by that much considering his current worth. He also has a serious work ethic and consistently puts out a film every one to two years which explains how he has become one of the wealthiest working directors today.

5. Peter Jackson Net Worth: $500 million

Peter Jackson Net Worth

Shutterstock

The man responsible for three of the greatest movies of all time… you guessed it… The Hobbit trilogy! Ha, definitely just kidding, it’s Lord of the Rings that I’m talking about. Still, even though The Hobbit movies were nowhere near as good as the original trilogy, they did end up bringing in Jackson an incredible income of somewhere around $100 million plus dollars. This, combined with the similar sum Jackson made from the original trilogy as well as his numerous other blockbusters are how he has landed a spot on this list.

4. Tyler Perry Net Worth: $600 Million

Tyler Perry Net Worth

Shutterstock

While he is known more as an actor than a director, if Tyler Perry is in a movie it’s almost guaranteed that he directed the film as well. He has an incredible work ethic and tends to release a movie at least once a year, and if that’s not the case, odds are because he happened to be directing a show during that time period instead. While none of his films are ever very critically acclaimed like the others on this list, they always have a box office draw and continue to show to Perry is a talented director in his own right.

3. James Cameron Net Worth: $700 million

James Cameron

Shutterstock

James Cameron has a knack for creating hits, and while he doesn’t release films that often when he does they are almost always bound to break some records. Both of his films, Titanic and Avatar were the highest grossing films ever at the time of their release, and even today still hold the 1 and 2 spots for the highest grossing films. Not only that, but he launched The Terminator franchise which still remains one of the most successful film series of all time.

2. Steven Spielberg Net Worth: $3.7 billion

Steven Spielberg

Shutterstock

There’s no one else more iconic when it comes to directors than Steven Spielberg. Having been the mind behind some of the greatest American classics such as Jaws, E.T, Jurrasic Park and so many more that went on to become huge franchises, it’s honestly a surprise he isn’t worth even more. Even today he continues to put out great movies like Lincoln and Ready Player One, proving that he is still the visionary filmmaker that he has always proven himself to be.

1. George Lucas Net Worth: $5 billion

George Lucas

Shutterstock

George Lucas really needs no explanation for his wealth as I can pretty much just say the words “Star Wars” and you will get the point. That being said, Lucas made his astounding fortune off of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, which are both worth huge fortunes through their merchandise sales alone. Where the majority of his billions comes from though, was his somewhat recent deal to sell the Star Wars franchise to Disney for an astounding $4 billion plus dollars. This, combined with what was his already a huge net worth is how he acquired his current fortune.

Joseph James Pappas: Full Story of Dr. Mark Hausknecht Murderer

Police

Houston Police Department Chief Art Acevedo said an arrest warrant has been issued for Joseph James Pappas, 65, on a murder charge in the death of Dr. Mark Hausknecht Hausknecht was gunned down by Pappas while riding his bike to the Texas Medical Center on Friday, July 20.

According to reports, Acevedo said that Pappas’ mother died during surgery more than 20 years ago and that authorities believe that is the motive in the murder of Dr. Hausknecht. Hausknecht, a cardiologist, once treated former President George H.W. Bush.

Police say that they received a tip on Tuesday, July 31, from someone saying the recognized the suspect in the surveillance video released that was released a day earlier. After the tip, Acevedo said that police got a search warrant and went to Pappas’ home. While Pappas was not home, they found evidence at the scene linking him to the killing.

Furthermore, Acevedo said Pappas had made phone calls indicating he was considering suicide. The suspect has not been seen in almost two days.

On Friday, July 20, police say that Hausknecht was riding through a construction area when the gunman, Pappas, rode up in front of him and fired three shots. Surveillance footage showed Pappas just behind Hausknecht as both headed north on Main across West Holcombe Boulevard.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner released a statement Wednesday that read:

“The Houston Police Department’s identification of a suspect in the shooting death of Dr. Mark Hausknecht is more proof of the excellent results that come from HPD’s top notch investigators working with information provided by the public, from prominent cases to those that escape widespread attention.

“While each homicide is a tragedy for our community, I am thankful that last year’s Houston homicide count fell to a three-year low and that Chief Acevedo and his staff are using preventive approaches designed to reduce the count even further. Let us keep the family of Dr. Hausknecht in our prayers as they begin the long road to healing.

“While Houstonians can take comfort in the fact that we believe we know the identity of the suspected shooter, Joseph J. Pappas, he has not yet been located. I’m asking the public to continue to partner with police. Just as a tip led to his identity, we still need anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward. They can call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS and they can remain anonymous.”

At this time, police ask anyone with information on Pappas’ whereabouts to call 911. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Weed Strain of the Week: Cotton Candy Kush

As the years go by and the youth become the adults, weed has assimilated itself more and more into everyday life, and therefore, everyday business. Medical marijuana, commercial marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia, literal marijuana commercials, edible marijuana, marijuana oil, marijuana magazines, and now, COED marijuana articles. Everybody else in the United States seems to be getting in on the reefer madness, so we’ve decided to do the same by introducing a new franchise: Weed Strain of the Week.

When I think of weed strains, the first thing that comes to mind is the 2008 stoner comedy classic Pineapple Express. In one of the earliest scenes of the movie, Saul explains to Dale how fire his newest strain of marijuana — Pineapple Express — is by only referring to previous strains that Dale had smoked.

“This is like if that Blue Oyster shit met that Afghan Kush I had – and they had a baby. And then, meanwhile, that crazy Northern Light stuff I had and the Super Red Espresso Snowflake met and had a baby. And by some miracle, those two babies met and fucked – this would the shit that they birthed.”

The strain “Super Red Espresso Snowflake” always stood out because it’s the perfect skewering of drug dealers who tried tell you what kind of strain you were buying: they were really just making shit up. However, now that legal marijuana and dispensaries exist, actual marijuana strains are more prevalent than ever, so we figured it’s time we start learning them all, one by one.

This week’s Weed Strain of the Week? Cotton Candy Kush.

Cotton Candy Kush

– Species: Hybrid

– About (via Leafly):

Named for its soft, fluffy appearance and intense candied aroma, Cotton Candy Kush is a hybrid that crosses Lavender with Power Plant. The result is a pungent palate of sweet, berry flavors and a floral scent. The euphoric effects will have you feeling like a kid in a candy store, while the relaxing powers will keep stress and pain to a minimum.

– History (via Wikileaf):

Cotton Candy Kush is a name used to describe two apparently distinct strains — one is an indica-heavy hybrid from breeders Delicious Seeds; the other is an older, more mysterious hybrid that has circulated in Canada for decades.

Delicious Seeds’ Cotton Candy Kush is a popular indica-leaning plant with memorable flavors and an enduring sedative high. It is a cross between the incredibly aromatic Lavender strain and Power Plant, which is derived from sativa landraces indigenous to South Africa. This strain’s THC content is purported to be 20%.

Cengage Unlimited Offers Access To Thousands Of Course Materials To Help You Save On Textbooks

When you enroll in college, the one expense that seems to annoy everyone without question is just how much your textbooks can cost. To make things worse, you’ll always have the classes that end up barely using the books, if at all! Sure, there are a few ways to get around it, like renting textbooks from your local library (and praying that it’s the up-to-date issue) or trying to find less expensive copies of the books online (and praying that they are still in stock and will arrive by midterms). You could even try to share your book with a classmate and see how fun that turns out! Still, with this such a common issue, you’d think that someone would have thought of an easier solution by now.

Some students are even skipping meals to afford books

According to Cengage News, Morning Consult, on behalf of Cengage, conducted national survey from July 11-13, 2018, using a national sample of 1,651 current and former students, aged from 18 to 30, in order to see just how textbook prices were stressing out the modern college student. 85% of current and former students say that their textbook and course material expenses are financially stressful. Using this, students were more stressed out by textbooks than things like meals and food (63%), healthcare (69%), housing (73%), and even tutition (88%).

In fact, almost half of current and former college students, at 43%, admitted to skipping meals in order to afford textbooks. That’s not all. Almost seven in 10 students report having to get a job during the school year to pay for college textbooks, with the same amount as those skipping meals taking out loans, and even 31% simply take less classes than they could at a time. Minority students. Minority students were especially impacted, specifically feeling the need to take less classes in order to keep up with the costs. In particular, African American students are also 35% more likely to save money for books by skipping a trip home.

The survey found that one option that students were interested in digital alternatives, with 81% of students agreeing that easily accessible digital course materials would even have a positive impact on their grades.

For some, these results could be a call to action. Michael Hansen, the CEO of Cengage, issued the following statements in response to the findings:

“The survey’s results should be a wake-up call for everybody involved in higher education. This is especially true for the publishing industry, including our own company, as we historically contributed to the problem of college affordability.”

“The data is clear: high textbook costs pose barriers to students’ ability to succeed in college.  Too many learners today are making painful trade-offs between course materials and bare necessities like housing and meals. Our industry must embrace what students are telling us. That’s why our company has developed a new subscription model that lowers costs.”

What is Cengage trying to do?

Cengage offers a subscription called Cengage Unlimited, which can be purchased directly from Cengage, online or at campus and off-campus bookstores. Costing around $119.99 a semester or $179.99 a year, despite students spending as much as $579 on average each year on textbooks, the subscription aims to help students save money at this expense. Students might even be able to use financial aid to purchase a subscription. Students who sign up will essentially have access to a subscription service that offers unlimited access to thousands of online course materials.

We interviewed Michael Hansen in order to get a good look at what Cengage is trying to do for students

  • Tell us more about what Cengage does?

“Cengage is the largest U.S.-based education and technology company serving the higher education market, providing course materials to students at affordable price points. We reach 11M students (of the 20 million) annually at nearly every higher education institution in the United States.”

  • Why do you think textbooks have become such a financial issue in recent years?

“The price of textbooks rose year on year to counter the decline in unit sales. As publishers lost share to the used book market, pirating and other sources, they raised prices to make up for lost revenue, rather than focusing on affordability and quality.”

“Since the textbook industry’s business model hasn’t changed in more than 100 years, the time is ripe for a new approach to address affordability and access issues in U.S. higher education.”

“Why do you think students take such sacrifices, such as those described in the survey, for textbooks?”

“Students today – most of which are not ‘traditional’ students – are already juggling a lot – job, family, childcare. When they realize they need to pay for course materials, and then realize how much they can cost, something has to give.”

  • What are the social and economic factors shaping textbook demand?

“Students are motivated by what they can afford and what will help them learn. Affordability of digital course materials is a big motivator – 72% say cost-effectiveness is very important when considering digital course materials.”

“And the majority of students (81%) think easily accessible digital course materials would have a positive impact on their grades.”

  • What are some steps Cengage has planned to help students?

“We are taking bold action to transform our business model and, in the process, disrupt the entire industry to support quality learning for students. This week, we’re launching Cengage Unlimited, the first-of-its-kind subscription service that offers unlimited access to more than 20,000 digital course materials, including eBooks, online homework and study guides, for one price. Available to purchase directly from Cengage online or at campus and off-campus bookstores, a subscription costs $119.99 a semester or $179.99 a year.”

“Considering students spend, on average, about $579 annually (with some spending significantly more), the subscription can save students up to half of what they were paying and, in some cases, even more. It’s a simple idea that we think will revolutionize an outdated textbook industry.”

  • What do you think the potential impact of Cengage’s plans will be?

“As of now, more than half of our revenues now come from digital, and it’s clear from the survey that students see digital as a way to improve learning. We believe that Cengage Unlimited will be a game changer for students and for our industry.”

  • What are Cengage’s plans for the future?

“We’re focused on spreading the word about Cengage Unlimited as an affordable alternative to the traditional model of buying course materials. We’re also exploring how we can add more value to the Cengage Unlimited service through partnerships with other education providers. For example, Cengage Unlimited subscribers now can get access to services from Chegg, including tutoring.”

Meyer has denied any previous knowledge, but a bombshell report from former ESPN college football reporter Brett McMurphy appears to indicate otherwise.

Because of the damning allegations, Ohio State has begun an internal investigation and placed Meyer on paid administrative leave.

While Meyer is being investigated about his prior knowledge of the abuse, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day will be serving as the acting head coach. If you aren’t a loyal Ohio State fan, you may not know who Day is.

Day has years of experience as an assistant coach at the college level, and has even coached quarterbacks in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, serving as an assistant under Chip Kelly and spending time coaching Colin Kaepernick. Back in January, the Buckeyes promoted Day from assistant offensive coordinator to full-time offensive coordinator along with his duties as quarterbacks coach.

During the offseason, Day was offered the opportunity to be a head coach in the SEC after the Mississippi State Bulldogs offered him the job to replace Dan Mullen, but Day remained loyal to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes and the move has now paid off as he has the chance to show what he can do as the head coach for the time being.

The Buckeyes open their 2018 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Oregon State. We will have to wait and see whether it is Day or Urban Meyer on the sideline leading the way.

‘Watermelon Steak’ At New York Restaurant Is Blowing People’s Minds

If you’re ever looking for a food that will blow your mind, go no further than Ducks Eatery in the East Side of New York City. The restaurant has unveiled the “watermelon steak” which has sent the internet into a frenzy and is blowing everyone’s mind. If you’re thinking “what in the world is a watermelon steak?” you are not alone.

At the restaurant, a watermelon is smoked and cured for a few days over oak wood; the same process the restaurant uses for a ham. Once it is cooked, the outside of the watermelon is browned and looks like a steak. But once you cut it open, the bright red inside pops and juices come oozing out of the fruit.

If you didn’t know any better, you’d think you were eating the rarest steak of all-time.

Check out this video of the “watermelon steak” being prepared via Foodbeast.

The innovated dish was created by chef Will Horowitz.

Now you can happily take your vegetarian and vegan friends to the restaurant while you enjoy a nice BBQ plate. As for what the watermelon steak tastes like, Instagram user Jeremy Jacobowitz gives a first-hand account of just how confusing the delicious treat can be for your senses.

“It’s such like a mindf***, ’cause your brain wants to think meaty and get that smokiness and saltiness. But then you go through it and it gets that sweetness of the watermelon,” he said.

This sensory overload seems like it is worth every penny. But if you want to enjoy one for yourself, you will have to call in advance.

Kelli Vassallo, a 38-year-old former teacher and coach at Williamsport Area High School in Lycoming County, has admitted she had a sex with one teenage girl and to molesting another one.

As a result of the charges, Vassallo is facing a county prison term plus a period of probation as the result of her guilty plea to charges of institutional sexual assault and corruption of a minor.

Reports indicate the former Pennsylvania basketball coach taught the two victims from 2012 to 2015 while teaching at Williamsport Area High School.

According to the terms of her plea deal, Vassallo now faces a county prison sentence of up to two years minus a day and a consecutive term of probation the maximum of which could be 10 years. In addition, Vassallo would have to register as a sex offender for 25 years.

via Penn Live:

Lycoming County Judge Marc F. Lovecchio set sentencing for Oct. 1. In the meantime Vassallo will be evaluated to determine if she is a sexually violent offender. She remains free on unsecured bail.

She admitted having indecent contact with a 13-year-old girl starting in June 2013 while she was a coach and having sex beginning in 2009 with a girl who was then 17. Their relationship continued after the girl turned 18. Lovecchio in April had ordered two trials because the incidents occurred four years apart.

“The fact that a 13-year-old basketball player in a program being coached by the defendant may have been molested over a period of a year is far different from the other situation in which a 17-year-old essentially fell in love with the defendant and they had consensual sexual encounters,” the judge wrote.

The 13-year-old was instructed not to say anything to anyone for fear Vassallo would go to jail, he wrote. Both victims described in detail at Vassallo’s preliminary hearing their relationship with her.

Vassallo is just the latest teacher to be charged for an alleged relationship with a teenager student.  Over the course of just a few months, educators across the country were arrested for entering into an inappropriate relationship with their students, Tennessee teacher Janet Smothers, LaToya Parker, Florida teacher Caroline Lawson, 26-year-old Allyson Moran and Katherine Ross Ridenhour were all arrested on similar charges. A woman named Kayla Sprinkles was arrested in North Carolina for similar sexual crimes.

The list goes on to include 22-year-old Oklahoma science teacher Hunter Day, 28-year-old teacher Megan Kotarski, 23-year-old history teacher Michelle Schiffer, 29-year-old Alyssia Marie Reddy, special education teacher Jordan Ondish and 28-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick have all been allegedly carrying on inappropriate relationships with their students.

In addition, 31-year-old Nicole Marie Andrews, 32-year-old Jessica Langford, 29-year-old Andrea Baber, 27-year-old Robin Dunlap, 27-year-old Jennifer Olajire-Aro have also been charged with these charges.

34-year-old Miranda Nicole Pauley was charged with similar crimes, Nancy Leigh Ann Brann, a former Christian school teacher, was arrested for having sex with a student, Coine Audiat pleaded no contest to having sex with a minor in 2016 and 23-year-old Darci Lake was arrested for an inappropriate relationship. 27-year-old Brittany Zamora from Arizona was arrested on similar charges. Keri Hoffman, 35, was also arrested for an alleged relationship with a student. More recently, 29-year-old Tiffany Ranweiler-Oblander and 33-year-old Maren Oates were arrested on similar charges.

Former Fraternity Member Placed On House Arrest For Involvement In Pledge’s Death

Ryan Burke, one of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity members charged in the hazing death of Timothy Piazza, has been sentenced to three months of house arrest.

In addition to the house arrest, Burke was sentenced to 27 months’ probation and ordered to pay fines, costs, and restitution.

Burke, 21, pleaded guilty in June to four counts of hazing and five counts related to unlawful acts involving liquor. The Scranton resident is just one of more than 20 members of the now-closed fraternity to face criminal charges over the February 2017 death of Timothy Piazza

Last November, Burke was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment, however, the attorney general’s office dropped the most serious charges in April.

In addition to Burke, former fraternity member Joseph Ems Jr. is also scheduled to enter a guilty plea on August 8. The plea is scheduled to be heard by Judge Brian Marshall, who sentenced Ryan Burke on Tuesday, July 31. At this time, it is not clear when Ems intended to plead guilty.

via NY Times:

Tom Kline, a lawyer for Mr. Piazza’s parents, Evelyn and James Piazza, said Tuesday that the sentence was “an important step on the long road to justice for the Piazza family.”

Mr. Burke apologized briefly to Mr. Piazza’s family before the sentencing, according to The Associated Press. Mr. Burke’s lawyer, Philip Masorti, said the punishment was fair, The A.P. reported. Mr. Masorti did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A prosecution sentencing memo filed last week said Mr. Burke, who is from Scranton, Pa., held the position of “rush chair” and was in charge of recruitment.

Piazza tragically passed away on February 4, 2017, after suffering a fractured skull and severe abdominal injuries from a fall during pledge night activities at the Beta Theta Pi house at Penn State. During the night, Piazza’s blood-alcohol level went “from a zero to as high as a .36”

Piazza’s death spurred a cascade of changes in the Penn State Greek life community and across the country. The school levied hard sanctions against greek life focused on hazing. These changes altered the rules for how fraternities and sororities can recruit members and host social events with alcohol. Beta Theta Pi was also permanently banned from Penn State.

‘Rick and Morty’ Creator Discusses New Approach To Writing Season 4

Adult Swim

While Rick and Morty fans don’t know when the show will be returning for its fourth season, they do know that when it does finally return, it’s going to stick around for a while.

Back in May, it was announced that show creator Dan Harmon had reached an agreement with Adult Swim to air 70(!) more episodes of Rick and Morty. Given that Rick and Morty are currently producing 10-11 episodes per season, another 70 episodes means potentially another seven seasons of the show. Fantastic news.

But maybe the even BETTER news is how exactly these new installments are being written.

In an interview with Emmy Magazine,  creator Dan Harmon discussed how he plans to approach writing the new season.

Instead of starting with A and B stories and trying to make those funny, the Rick and Morty writers will now be focusing on funny ideas & bits of dialogue & moments first, and then they’ll structure stories around those.

via Emmy Magazine:

Rather than focus on A and B stories and certain jokes and bits of dialogue that might fit together, Harmon and his team will instead develop, nurture and cultivate ideas, moments, conversations, jokes, stories, premises and swaths of dialogue, with no emphasis on any one aspect over another.

Anything that makes them laugh will be worthy of attention, and only as a last resort — and at the last minute — will these items be collected into episodes. It’s a sort of deconstruction of the process, focusing on moments first and structure second, rather than the other way around (that is, the usual way). Most experienced show creators would find that daunting, but not Harmon.

“The last thing I want is to be the guy who makes Rick and Mortysterile,” he says with a shrug. “We need to keep it fresh and continue to innovate. It helps to collaborate with someone like Justin. He has his disorders and I have mine, but it’s hard to find a creative partnership where each thinks the other is a genius, and each is terrified of alienating the other or letting the other down. It’s really, really hard to find partnerships like that. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

Rick and Morty season four has yet to be given a premiere date, but when it does finally return,  we’re sure it will do so with a bang.

More Rick and Morty coming. Looking forward to all the tweets asking where it is! #theydrawingit pic.twitter.com/KZild3B9rP

Demetrious Johnson is looking to defend his UFC flyweight title for the 12th time this weekend at UFC 227 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Johnson is defending his belt against Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, who he previously beat during his lengthy winning streak. In anticipation of the title fight, Johnson and Cejudo joined a conference call to take questions from the media.

While on the call, one reporter began asking a question for UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, who defends his belt against rival Cody Garbrandt in the main event on Saturday’s pay-per-view.

Since Dillashaw wasn’t on the call, “Mighty Mouse” took the opportunity to have some fun.

Johnson jumped in to answer the question, impersonating Dillashaw and tricking the reporter. The reporter asked a follow-up question, which Johnson answered, before finally revealing he was pulling a fast one on the second follow-up attempt.

You can listen to the exchange below.

Reporter: “First question for T.J. Dillashaw, the champion. Are you disappointed at all that your first title defense is an immediate rematch with Cody Garbrandt?”

[8 seconds of silence]

Reporter: “T.J.? Can you hear me?”

Johnson (as Dillashaw): “Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m here. Sorry, sorry, sorry, I’m here. Yeah, you know, I think I did a good job the first time at Madison Square Garden taking out Cody. But, you know, he’s the No. 1 contender, and I’m ready to go out there and give it to him, man.”

Well played, Demetrious.

UFC 227 takes place Saturday, Aug. 4 on pay-per-view. You can listen to the full media conference call — which includes the real TJ Dillashaw — below.

Iowa State Fraternity Lights Uncontrollable Bonfire Days Before Lease Ends

Members of the Delta Chi fraternity at Iowa State University fraternity started an out-of-control bonfire just days before their lease ran out.

Officials say that the fraternity members were in the final days of their lease at an apartment building that had already decided not to allow them back.

According to various reports, the Delta Chi fraternity members had a bonfire at the apartment building on the corner of Knapp Street and Welch Avenue in Ames, Iowa, in the early hours of July 22.

After they threw couches and furniture into the fire, the flame became out of control, causing damage to the building and forcing them to call the police.

Their lease was set to end on Tuesday, July 31.

via The Des Moines Register:

In January, RentAmes Property Management informed Delta Chi it would not offer a new lease because of alcohol-related incidents, citing safety as a reason for refusing housing to the fraternity that had rented out the entire building for the past three years.

Building surveillance caught the bonfire on camera, showing fraternity members start by throwing in couch cushions before deciding to throw the entire couch in the fire. A couple of men are shown pulling back a wooden table that appeared to be a few feet from the flames.

After the fire died down, a second couch was thrown in, which caused the flames to grow out of control. People in the backyard began to back away from the fire; several went inside.

Police arrived after receiving a call around 3:13 a.m., and Ames firefighters extinguished the blaze, according to the police report. The fire did not touch the building, but the report said it was close.

The police report said the fire was next to propane tanks and near a moped. One resident was cited for open burning, punishable by a $135 fine. Welty said he wasn’t notified of the fire until police said something more than a week later.

Nate Welty, a property manager with RentAmes, said that the company will not be renting to other Greek organizations after this experience.

Top 5 NFL Training Camp Battles To Watch

$

Training camp is a very important time in the NFL season, as stars emerge and some stars start to fizzle out. Rookies can start to show their true colors, unlike OTAs and minicamp, we finally see everyone together. Rookie QBs will get shots against number one defenses. We also get to see position battles, which can be huge for the future of teams and player’s careers. Which are the most important this year?

New York Jets QBs

Instagram Photo

Sam Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater, Josh McCown. On one hand, you have Darnold, the third overall pick in the 2018 draft out of USC, who many people thought was the best quarterback in the draft. He has great potential, but there are questions about his NFL readiness. Then there’s Bridgewater, a solid starter for the Vikings who suffered a horrific knee injury two years ago. Before he went down, he proved that he could win in the NFL, and could succeed if given another chance. And finally, McCown. Before a broken hand ended his season last year, McCown led the Jets, a team that some thought would go 0-16, to a “respectable” 5-11 record. All three guys bring something different to the table, but which one will win the job?

Buffalo Bills QBs

Instagram Photo

This is the least or most exciting competition in the NFL this year. Josh Allen, Nathan Peterman and AJ McCarron. The latter two have been unimpressive during their time in the NFL, and the former had an unimpressive college career and was a polarizing draft prospect. He ended up going seventh overall and apparently has been hot and cold in camp, overthrowing receivers on screens. Keep in mind his 56% career Peterman has five career interceptions, which all came in his only career start. McCarron has been unimpressive as a starter too, as he led a Bengals offense that was among the best in the league with Andy Dalton at QB in 2015-16, and they sputtered, before choking in the playoffs once again. While it is important who starts for a team, it might not matter very much in this case.

Arizona Cardinals QBs

Instagram Photo

Sam Bradford vs Josh Rosen. The battle of who’s going to throw to Larry Fitzgerald. Bradford, the first overall pick in 2010 has a ton of talent, but also a long injury history. He has proven that he can be successful when healthy, but that’s a big if behind a shaky offensive line.

Josh Rosen was the 10thoverall pick in the 2018 draft and was thought to be the most NFL ready QB in the draft. Will his arm talent push him past Bradford? No matter who wins the job, they could be in for a long season. David Johnson can help take pressure off of the winner, but that doesn’t fix the offensive line. They are both accurate passers, but with the heat that might get thrown at them play after play, whoever wins could be in for a rough time.

New England Patriots WRs

Instagram Photo

After the injury to Jordan Matthews, who was released from the team, the Patriots have some questions at receiver at least to begin the year. Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell are the likely starters while Julian Edelman serves his PED suspension, but behind them is a curious jumble. Kenny Britt, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Braxton Berrios are probably going to end up dueling for playing time. Dorsett and Britt will probably see the most time on the field, but you never know. Once Edelman gets back, the receiving corps will sure up, but the first four weeks are incredibly important, as they include matchups with the upstart Texans and Jaguars.

Green Bay Packers CBs

Instagram Photo

The Packers pass defense was among the worst in the NFL last year, and they addressed that early on in the draft. After taking Kevin King in the second round in 2018, they took Jaire Alexander in the first round in 2018, and Joshua Jackson in the second. Will the young guns be able to beat out the veterans? Quinten Rollins, Tramon Williams, and Davon House have the experience, but the young guys have the talent edge. Aaron Rodgers’ first pass of training camp was picked off by King, which might be a sign of things to come. King and Jackson both have great length, and Alexander has great speed and agility, which combined with Green Bay’s safety tandem, could lead to a massive improvement in pass defense.
