The NFL Will Be Extinct Within 50 Years

While I grew up playing soccer, like most of you, I grew up watching football — the American kind.

By the time I was in the 6th grade, I could list every team in the NFL, who their coach & best player was, how many Super Bowls they’ve won, etc, etc. Like most kids back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, football was the sport to watch and it remained that way for some time.

Let me put into perspective just how much football — and more specifically, the NFL — has grown in my lifetime.

I was born in 1993, but four years prior, in 1989, Texas oil tycoon Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys for $140 million dollars. Now, not even 30 years later, those same Dallas Cowboys are worth $4.8 billion dollars, making them the most valuable sports franchise in the entire world. And aside from the valuation, maybe even more impressive is the fact that the Cowboys are growing in value by 14% annually.

For those keeping score at home, 14% of $4.8 billion is $672,000,000. Just stupid, stupid money.

But for all of the trillions of dollars that flow in and out of the game every year, the NFL still isn’t able to overcome it’s biggest enemy: itself.

Over the last few years, the NFL has been dominated by off the field headlines more than ones created on the field — and deservedly so.

Whether it be domestic abuse, civil rights, concussions, patriotism, protesting, etc — every week there’s a negative story dragging down the game we once loved. And besides all of that: the game just isn’t safe, plain and simple. Sorry, football hardos (cough cough Larry Fedora), but CTE is a very real and very dangerous disease that will exist for as long as the sport itself does.

No longer can you watch a football game without taking a political stance. Greg Hardy threw his girlfriend onto a pile of guns and lined up for the Cowboys that next season. Ex & current football players alike commit suicide what seems like yearly due to the effects of CTE. And don’t even get me started with the kneeling, the national anthem, and President Trump.

Sports are supposed to be an escape from the real world, but instead, the NFL has become a boiling plate for all of the real world issues we were trying to escape in the first place. These days, every time we turn on the NFL — instead of being able to simply zone out, have a beer, and watch Julio Jones hang 200 yards on the Bucs — we’re being confronted and bombarded with political, social, and societal issues.

Whether it be alienating the African American community with their preposterous anthem protest policy, offending regular, decent people for employing the likes of Greg Hardy, or terrifying mothers with the potentially devastating, life-ending effects that CTE could have on their sons, the NFL is not long for this world and will likely cease to exist as we know it by the time our kids are our age.

We’ve Got Our First Look At The New Season Of ‘American Horror Story’

FX

Continuing its tradition of being the creepiest show on television, American Horror Story released the title and first look at their eighth season: American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

The theme of American Horror Story has always been one of the most fascinating dynamics of the show and the idea of the Apocalypse playing out in the AHS universe seems as tantalizing as any season yet. Perhaps most interesting is that AHS: Apocalypse will be a crossover of season 1, Murder House, and season 3, Coven.

The previous season of American Horror Story includes: Murder House, Asylum (the GOAT AHS season, that’s just facts), Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, and Cult.

via Uproxx:

American Horror Story has never been a show that believes in quiet, restrained horror, which is why the first season ended with the birth of the Antichrist, Michael, in the modern day, and then dropped the story completely. Over the years, we’ve gotten hints that the show will return to the Antichrist, and that the characters who made it out of American Horror Story: Coven will have something to do with it. And the first promotional images from season eight, and its subtitle, underscore that.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse, which premieres on September 12 on FX, stars Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Leslie Grossman, Adina Porter, Cheyenne Jackson and newcomer Joan Collins.

Some Colleges Allow Students To Pay With Future Income Instead Of Tuition

$

People go to college in order to get a job, meaning that all the money you spend on tuition, books and whatever else is ultimately an investment in your future. Still, a lot of people out there might want to wait until they already have a steady income before they make such an investment, but that would create a paradox, wouldn’t it? You’d think so, but here me out. Some colleges out there might be interested in being paid with their students’ future salaries instead of tuition. Confused on how that works? Let me explain.

How does this work?

One of the latest schools to offer such a payment option, Norwich University in Vermont recently announced that it would offer students this type of payment option, also known as an “income share agreement.” Norwich’s program will start out on a small scale, with only students who are not eligible for payment plans or those who are taking longer than the traditional eight semesters to finish their degree.

Instead of a traditional loan, which would have students pay down the principal and interest until there is nothing left, students in the program pay back a percentage of their salary for a set period of time. As you may have guessed, this might even influence schools to ensure that their students are hired within high-earning jobs after graduation just so they can pay back their “tuition.” On the other side of the fence, students involved in these programs find college enrollment less risky, especially in a world where it can be hard finding a high-paying job, or a job in general, after graduation, making it hard or even impossible to pay back their loans.

As mentioned, Norwich University is just one school to offer such a program. Income share agreements were first proposed by Milton Friedman in 1955, with Yale experimenting with the idea during the 1970’s. Over the years, this payment plan proved popular with technical training programs, such as coding boot camps, since participants do not have access to federal student loans.

What are people saying about this programs?

According to the Los Angeles Times, through the Associated Press, Lauren Wobby, the school’s chief financial officer and treasurer, issued the following statement over the payment contract:

“Norwich University is committed to offering this new way to help pay for college in a way that aligns incentives and helps reduce financial barriers to degree completion.”

Clare McCann, deputy director for education policy at the New America Foundation, also noted the appeal of paying for college when you actually have the money, but warned that its appeal might ultimately limit the number of students eligible for such programs:

“Taking on the debt through a contract, where you don’t take on a debt per se but instead will repay a portion of your future income, has a certain appeal to students when the concept is fully explained to them.”

“If income share agreement providers aren’t careful, they can definitely see unintended consequences in discriminatory terms toward students. This is one of the biggest differences between income share agreements and federal student loans.”

“Federals loans offer the same terms to all borrowers.”

Emelia Holden is the 21-year-old waitress who was seen in the now-viral video of a waitress slamming Ryan Cherwinski to the ground when he groped at Vinnie Van Go-Go’s in Savannah, Georgia.

Cherwinski, 31, of Palm Bay, Florida, was arrested and charged with sexual battery. He reportedly told police that it was just an accident and that he grabbed the waitress because he was “trying to inform her to move because she was in the way.”

Following the assault, Holden’s co-worker called police. The officers detained Cherwinski after looking at the surveillance footage, Savannah Police Department spokesperson Bianca Johnson confirmed. The outlet reported Cherwinski was charged with sexual battery.

via Fox News:

Emelia Holden, 21, a server at Vinnie Van Go-Go’s in Savannah, was putting menus away on June 30 after taking a customer’s order. In the security footage, a male customer, walking behind her, reaches out and gropes her as he passes by.

Holden immediately turns around and grabs him by his T-shirt collar, before wrapping her arm around his neck and slamming him against the wall. Holden then appears to point her finger at him and reprimand him.

Video of the incident was posted this week on Reddit, where it garnered more than 4,200 comments. The title of the post read: “My cousin takes down this pervert down for grabbing her a–. He is later arrested in front of his wife and 2 kids when the cops arrived.”

Due to her 15 minutes of viral attention, Holden created a GoFundMe account to raise money for cat shelters. At the time of this writing,  the GoFundMe page has raised over $7,250 of her $5,000 goal.

Holden says she hopes her experience empower other women to stand up for themselves, saying “you have every right to wear what you want and you most certainly have every right to defend yourself.”

Shark Week 2018 Schedule: Dates, Times and Full Lineup

Shark Week is an established American tradition arguably just as important as the Fourth of July or the Superbowl. Well, maybe not “as important” but it does have one thing the other two don’t which is sharks! (At least usually). Anyways the point is Shark Week starts on July 22nd and is looking to be one of the best ones yet. While in the past I will admit there have some disappointments such as “Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives” where all that was revealed was that the megalodon did not, in fact, live, as well as a special titled “Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs Great White” which was supposed to feature a race between the two but ended up just being a simulation.

Now I don’t know If I was really expecting megalodons to exist or an Olympian race a great white but a man has got to dream! Despite these past disappointments though It’s important to remain optimistic, and with this years line up as well as the event being hosted by Shaq (meaning it’s now called Shaq Week) it’s honestly hard not to be. That being said here’s everything you need to know about Shark Week 2018.

9:00 PM EDT – Bloodline: Spawn of Jaws – It was sharks found off the coast of Long Island that initially spurred the idea for Jaws, and while none of those sharks no longer exist, a shark expert believes their bloodline may still be out there.

10:00 PM EDT – Great White Shark Babies – Three shark experts team up to find out where the pregnant females of Guadalupe go to have their pups.

11:00 PM EDT – Jaws – You already know this classic, there’s a shark that’s too big and a boat that’s not big enough.

Saturday, July 28

9:00 PM EDT – Return of the Megashark – In a search for the largest of the great whites called Megasharks, Jeff Kurr and Andy Casagrande travel to New Zeland to find some of these behemoths.

10:00 PM EDT – Sharks Gone Wild – I guess it’s what you think it that there will be a bunch of topless sharks, but this is just due to sharks typically not wearing clothes. Really it’s just a clip show that features some of the internets most viral shark videos from the past year.

11:00 PM EDT – Jaws III – Jaws is back… for the third time! Actually, I think it’s Jaws’s daughter or something in this one, anyways there’s going to be a shark and it’s going to murder a whole bunch of people is the main thing.

Sunday, July 29

7:00 – 11:00 PM EDT – Naked and Afraid (with sharks) – It’s Naked and Afraid but with way more sharks than usual. What more could you want really than watching a couple of nude people trying not to get munched to death by sharks? I’m certainly sold.

And that’s this year’s Shark Week schedule! It’s looking to be a great one, and with cameos from Shaq, Bear Grylls, and Guy Fieri who all, as far as I know, have not been reported to have been attacked by a shark recently which means the episodes went well. With that being said it should be an entertaining week that hopefully causes less outrage than previous years!

Over 100 Ex-Students Come Forward In Ohio State Investigation Concerning Late Team Doctor

$

Over 100 former Ohio State students have come forward with sexual misconduct allegations against former team doctor, the late Richard Strauss, as the school announced this past Friday.

What happened?

The school has hired an outside firm, Perkins Cole, to conduct an investigation into Richard Strauss after several former wrestlers earlier this year alleged that they were subjected to sexual abuse or harassment. The firm has notably conducted over 200 interviews with former Ohio States students and staff into allegations of abuse that span from 1979 to 1997;  the school also confirmed that the firm is in contact with area prosecutors and is expected to conduct at least 100 more interviews. At this time, the firm is not trying to contact the victims directly, in order to avoid bringing up past trauma and impacting their mental health, but it trying to find information from other alumni.

In addition to former patients at Student Health Services, the alleged victims include former athletes from 14 sports: baseball, cheerleading, cross country, fencing, football, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball and wrestling.

According to USA Today, Ohio State president Michael V. Drake released the following statement concerning the case:

“We are grateful to those who have come forward and remain deeply concerned for anyone who may have been affected by Dr. Strauss’ actions.”

“We remain steadfastly committed to uncovering the truth.”

Who was Richard Strauss?

Strauss passed away in 2005, with his death being ruled a suicide, according to USA Today. Serving around 20 years at Ohio State, including over a decade as a team doctor, he served in multiple roles at the school.

In addition to the allegations directly concerning the school, Strauss was also aleged to have abused patients at a private off-campus medical offical he establised in 1996, all the while he was still working for Ohio State. In addition, there is speculation that victims could have included high school-aged students.

Florida Friday: All Of This Week’s Headlines From America’s Most Interesting State

$

Oh, Florida — like our wives and girlfriends, we can’t live with you, but we certainly couldn’t live without you. You are like the Drunk Uncle in the family that is the United States of America: you mean well & have a good heart, but show up to the party already hammered and then tell Cousin Derek to go f*ck himself before you fall face first through the all-glass living room coffee table. You’re a wildcard, but you’re our wildcard, and we love ya for it.

For some reason, though, more than any other state in the union, Florida has an uncanny knack of churning out the most preposterous headlines you’ve ever heard of.

“Homeless Man Engages in Sword Fight with Alligator”

“Pink-Haired Couple Rob Bank Armed Only with String Cheese”

“Party Clown Arrested for Smoking Crack in Front of Children”

Are these real stories? Did I just make these headlines up? Who knows. I guess you’ll have to Google it. Either way, the point is they sound real and that’s because in Florida, literally, anything is possible, even the most bizarre.

Okay, I’ll admit, the headlines above you are fake, but the ones below are entirely real, and that’s what makes Florida so Florida: you cannot tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not because it all sounds so wildly ridiculous.

“Teen Bites the Head Off Live Chicken”

“Elementary School Teacher Arrested For Selling Marijuana”

“Police Searching For Cross-Dresser Who Keeps Leaving Underwear On Random Cars”

“Man Causes $100K in Damage at Local Walmart, Blames ‘Hookah Smoking Caterpillar'”

“Teacher Placed on Leave For Drowning Racoons in Class”

“Woman Poses as Federal Agent to Score Free Chick-Fil-A”

“This Chainsaw Wielding Nun is the Hero Florida Deserves Right Now”

“Man Whips Out Samurai Sword During Road Rage Incident”

“Teacher Suspended For Allowing Students to Hook Up in Class”

Needless to say, you get our point: Florida is a mad, mad place.

So with that in mind, we’ve decided to do a weekly round-up of all the headlines from America’s Bastard Son of a State … the only and only Florida.

Florida Headlines of the Week

– Florida man driving 153 mph in Corvette arrested for DUI

Florida man drops pants at Target, tells cops his drugs were ‘blessed by God.’

– Florida man posed as housewife to lure men into home where he’d secretly film sex acts

– Florida man captured in Auburn wanted in nine states

– Florida man admits to drinking in car, but not while driving

Top 10 Richest Poker Players On Earth Right Now

Richest Poker Players

Consistently gambling can lead to a life of poverty, desperation, and debt…well unless you’re these guys in which case it’s great! The people on this list are all masters of poker and continue to demonstrate that the game is based more on skill than luck. Constantly considering their odds as well as being able to read their opponents is what has gotten these players a spot on this list, and being able to do that consistently is how they have accumulated such significant wealth.

10. Jamie Gold Net Worth: 13 million

Shutterstock

Jamie Gold has a lot on his plate (metaphorically at least, I don’t know how much the guy eats) between being a professional poker player, producer and talent agent. He has had some major clients such as Jimmy Fallon and Lucy Liu, but still one of his main sources of revenue is poker. He started playing professionally in 2005, and just a year later he went on to win the 2006 World Series of Poker. He pioneered the strategy of pressuring his opponents to bet heavily, either calling them on their bluffs are pushing them all in only to take the pot. While some took issue with his playing style, that didn’t stop him from walking away with 12 million in winnings.

9. Joe Hachem Net Worth: 16 million

Instagram Photo

Joe Hachem is and Australian poker player who has won both the 2005 World Series of Poker as well as the 2006 World Poker Tour making him one of only five poker players in the world to ever have done so. He grossed around 10 million from both events, and the other smaller events he has won along the way are what explains how he has amassed such a significant net worth. He is very restrained in his playing style and typically doesn’t bluff without some kind of out ready.

8. Antonio Esfandiari Net Worth (tie): 20 million

Shutterstock

A man who has worked with cards his whole life, Antonio Esfandiari started as a professional magician before eventually making the switch to poker. From there he went on to win two world poker tours as well as three world series of poker. Not only this, but in 2012 Esfandiari participated in a $1,000,000 buy-in tournament benefitting the One Drop Foundation, and by winning he ended up making $18 million in profits. This is considered to be the largest single payout in poker history and can explain how Esfandiari obtained a spot on this list.

7. Phil Hellmuth Net Worth (tie): 20 million

Instagram Photo

Phil Hellmuth has one of the most impressive professional records out there, having won an astounding fifteen World Series of Poker bracelets over his career. He started fairly young and dropped out during his third year in college in order to pursue his poker career. He actively is involved in the poker world, and when not competing in high stakes tournaments he also is a regular on the show Poker After Dark as well.

6. Chris Ferguson Net Worth: 25 million

Shutterstock

Chris Ferguson has won six World Series of Pokers events over the course of his professional career with an estimated payout of around $2 million. While this is very impressive in itself, much of Ferguson’s revenue is thought to come from the website he is a director of called Full Tilt Poker. In September 2011 a civil complaint was made against Ferguson complaining that the site was really a Ponzi scheme which had paid out upwards of $444 million dollars of customer money to the site’s owners. The case was eventually dismissed with regulations being placed on the site, but odds are Ferguson still made away with some large profits.

5. Daniel Colman Net Worth: 28 million

Instagram Photo

Still fairly young as far as professional poker players go, Daniel Colman has been making waves in the poker community by winning some of the largest pots ever in poker tournament history. The most notable of these took place in 2014 when he competed in a one million dollar buy-in competition and came out winning it with a pot of more than fifteen million. He has won several other high stakes poker tournaments as well, taking home seven plus figures at each one, and is also a prominent online poker player as well which explains how he has been able to accumulate so much wealth so quickly.

4. Erik Seidel Net Worth: 40 million

Instagram Photo

Erik Seidel has always been interested in high-risk exchanges it seems, playing professional backgammon in his youth, he eventually became a trader in the stock market before deciding to make a living as a playing poker. From that point he went on to win eight World Series of Poker bracelets as well as a World Poker Tour title and even was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2010. He also set a record by being the only poker to earn over 5 million in a year more than once, and as of the end of 2017 is said to have done it an incredible four times.

3. Daniel Negreanu Net Worth: 50 million

Instagram Photo

Getting his start early, Canadian born Daniel Negreanu had the ambition to become a poker player from a young age, and by sixteen years old had dropped out of high school to spend his time betting. He eventually made the move to Las Vegas and has since won an incredible six World Series of Poker, as well as two World Poker Tour championship titles. He also boasts the title of being the only poker player to have been voted player of the year more than once, as well as being voted the best poker player of the decade in 2014. Needless to say, the man is very good at poker, and his current net worth is certainly a reflection of that.

2. Phil Ivey Net Worth: 100 million

Instagram Photo

Considered to be one of the best all-around poker players ever, Phil Ivey or “the Tiger Woods of poker” has been able to accumulate huge amounts of wealth through tournaments as well as private investments. He has won ten World Series of Poker bracelets over the course of his career as well as winning a World Poker Tour title as well. While all these wins have done much to explain the vast amounts of wealth he has accumulated, it is also Ivey’s involvement with the site Full Tilt Poker that contributed to his earnings. Ivey was apparently involved with the design of the site but eventually sued them due to a contract breach. The initial sum he requested in reparations was 150 million dollars, but eventually, he settled for somewhere around 20 million.

1. Dan Bilzerian Net Worth: 150 million

Instagram Photo

It’s hard to be a person who uses the internet today without knowing who Dan Bilzerian is. He is a fairly well-known poker player, although it’s tough to confirm just how much he has made from the game due to most of his earnings not being obtained in a professional setting. Despite that he still has amassed a huge fortune, taking in revenue from a variety of other sources. The first may be his father who has claimed to have made hundreds of millions throughout his business career and may have passed some of that on to Dan. The other is that he is a very influential social media personality, and has built something of an empire that he undoubtedly uses for ad revenue. It is all these things as well as Bilzerian’s poker career that puts him on the top of this list.

WENN

James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has been fired by Disney-Marvel as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after disturbing tweets from his account about rape and pedophilia have emerged.

One of the now-deleted tweets read, “I like when little boys touch me in my silly place.”

Another tweet said: “The best thing about being raped is when you’re done being raped and it’s like ‘whew this feels great, not being raped!’”

Gunn claims that the tweets — which were discovered on Thursday, July 19, by people who oppose his political reviews — were “jokes that were outrageous and taboo” because he considered himself to be a “provocateur”.

Disney-Marvel released the following statement:

“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”

Shark Week 2018 Memes: Funny Photos & Images

Shark Week, television at its finest, is here again! To help you get into the spirit of things, we’ve collected memes from around the internet celebrating Shark Week and everything shark-related. Because who doesn’t love sharks? Seriously, sharks even somehow make tornadoes better!

For those unfamiliar with the event, Shark Week is an annual, week-long television block brought to us from the Discovery Channel. First starting in 1088, the event has just been too successful to stop! For its 2018 run, Discovery even promoted the event with a countdown clock on its website!

Over the years, the event has sometimes delved a little to into its celebrity status. Celebrities sometimes help host the event. A shark-themed video game was released to help celebrate its 20th anniversary. Infamously, in 2017, the event even hosted a heavily promoted race between Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps and a Great White shark; unfortunately, it later turned out that the shark involved with the race was a computer simulation.

This year, for 2018, Shark Week starts on Sunday, July 22, 2018, with “Bear vs. Shark,” a special in which Bear Grylls will put his survival skills to use and act as human bait for sharks, airing at 8 P.M. EDT/PDT. Lasting an hour, it will be followed up by “Shaq Does Shark Week,” in which Shaquille O’Neal will try to overcome a fear of sharks with the help of former Marine and “Daily Show” alumnus Rob Riggle. At around 10 P.M. EDT/PDT, the night will end with “Ronda Rousey Uncaged,” Holly Holm, UFC’s biggest female star, will undergo survival training with a real-life shark-attack survivor and face off against a real-life mako shark.

Just because the night will be over doesn’t mean that’s the end. This is Shark Week, remember? With television events on the following Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the event will end on the following Sunday with the special, “Naked and Afraid of Sharks,” in which veterans for fend of themselves for two weeks near shark-infested waters. Don’t worry. You don’t have to participate. You just need to watch!
