Earlier today Alaska joined the ranks of Colorado and Washington, and legalized the smoking of recreational weed. Hallelujah! Anyone over the age of 21 can now own up to one ounce of weed, smoke up in their homes, and grow up to six plants. While all that sounds considerably awesome, there are a few restrictions.
Lighting up in public is still illegal, and those wishing for a smoke at the park will be faced with a $100 fine if found doing so. Selling regulations are also unclear; it will take the state some time to figure out the specifics of cannabis sales, but officials are obligated to start accepting business applications one year from today, so they better figure that out ASAP. Other than that, smoke away! 53% of residents voted in favor of the initiation, meaning they’re guaranteed to spend their day in a glorious haze.
We knew Alaska had something to offer other than freezing temperatures. And even more good news: Oregon is set to follow suit in July.
