Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the rockstar freshman Congresswoman, generates headlines for a number of reasons. She is an advocate for the Green New Deal to combat climate change, she is outspoken about President Donald Trump, and she apparently gets really expensive haircuts.
According to the New York Post, AOC — or as Trump calls her, “Leader of the Squad” — dropped a whopping $250 on a haircut.
I mean, the drip always has to be on point and you should look fresh, but if you’re trying to relate to the working class and battle income equality then you probably shouldn’t get a haircut that would cost nearly three bones with a tip.
People are taking notice, too.
“AOC is the Eva Peron of American politics. She preaches socialism while living the life of the privileged. There is nothing wrong with spending money to make yourself look better, especially as a personality who depends upon visual mediums for her make power,” Richard Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government, told the Washington Times.
“But it is a bad look to spend hundreds of dollars to get your hair done to make a video decrying income inequality.”
Of course, some of AOC’s defenders say the criticism is sexist.
“1) this would obvs never be a story about a man 2) this is not an expensive haircut/color for a public figure who is frequently on TV 3) if her hair was raggedy, that would be the lead story instead,” Twitter user Jessica Valenti. wrote.
It is a bizarre reason for the outspoken Ocasio-Cortez to find herself in the headlines, but these are the times we are living in.
What we do know, however, is that she’s going to rely on her Bronx background to brush this latest controversy off and continue to push forward. Seriously, though, who drops $250 on a trip to the salon?
