Joshua Brown, a key witness in the trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger who was charged with the murder of Brown’s neighbor Botham Jean, was shot and killed on Friday, October 4 outside of his apartment complex. Plenty of theories surfaced regarding the motive of Brown’s death, but now authorities are beginning to share some details about the moments surrounding his shooting.
According to local news outlet WFAA-8, Brown was shot during a drug deal. Officials also say a “large amount of marijuana was also seized from Brown’s apartment during a search.”
Arrest warrants have reportedly been issued for two suspects in connection to Brown’s death.
When news of Brown’s death first surfaced, there were reports that he was shot in the mouth. Those reports led to some speculation that Brown was shot and killed as retaliation for his testimony against Guyger. However, authorities have claimed those reports were not accurate.
“Dallas County, the City of Dallas and others will work to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation of the murder of Joshua Brown. Mr. Brown was not shot in the mouth or head but was shot more than one time. Many career professionals are hard at work on this case,” Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins wrote in a statement on Twitter. “Please extend those career professionals and each other grace. This will be my only comment at this time and I am not taking press calls or interviews.”
Lee Merritt, who represents the family of Botham Jean, initially claimed that Brown was shot in the mouth and chest, but later said he heard the gunshot wounds were to the buttocks and side.
Brown had previously been shot in November 2018 after an altercation outside of a nightclub in Dallas. Brown was believed to be one of the targets of the shooting, but he survived and another man was killed.
