A Netflix hit series could have made a major breakthrough. According to a report from Newsweek, an inmate in Wisconsin admitted to the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach in 2005, which is the main focus of the series Making a Murderer.
Stephen Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey have been behind bars for more than a decade because of the killing.
“We haven’t confirmed the legitimacy of the confession, but seeing as it was given by a notable convicted murderer from Wisconsin, we feel responsible to deliver any and all possible evidence to law enforcement and legal teams,” Shawn Rech, director of Convicting a Murderer, told Newsweek. “Having been in production for 20 months, we’ve uncovered an unfathomable amount of information and evidence that is leading us to the truth. Our investigation does not end here.”
The prisoner has not been named and will not publicly be named until police review the alleged admission.
“I watched Making a Murderer, like tens of millions of others,” Rech added. “After watching the series I was angry with law enforcement, and even embarrassed as an American because of what appeared to have happened to Steven and Brendan. But after doing a little bit of follow-up research I learned that not only did I not have the whole story, but I was misled by the series. And I’m saying this as a fan, not as an established documentary filmmaker.”
Digital Spy added: “Despite all current episodes having been available for a few months now, lawyer Kathleen Zellner has been keeping the case alive by sharing updates from the front line of Steven Avery’s appeal battle. Whether you’re a firm believer in his guilt or his innocence, there’s a lot of investment and people continue to want answers to the many, many open questions. So when we found out that Convicting a Murderer – another, unofficial, documentary focusing on the same criminal case – was in the works, our ears pricked up. Here’s everything we know so far.”
The docuseries being directed by Rech is expected to be finalized in March and be available on streaming services shortly after. The streaming service that will air the docuseries has yet to be announced.
