Ed Buck, a prominent Democratic donor, has been arrested after a third man overdosed in his home. Two of the overdoses were fatal — Gemmel Moore, 26, died in 2017, and Timothy Dean, 55, died early this year. A third man, 37, overdosed this month and authorities claim Buck personally injected drugs into the man.
Buck was charged with a felony count each of battery causing serious injury, administering methamphetamine and maintaining a drug house, according to KABC-TV.
If convicted, Buck faces a maximum sentence of five years and eight months in state prison.
Prosecutors say that Buck offered drugs and shelter to vulnerable addicts in exchange for sexual encounters. Buck has been described as a “violent, dangerous sexual predator.” Buck is believed to have supplied the methamphetamine linked to all three of the overdoses. Buck is also believed to mainly prey “on men made vulnerable by addiction and homelessness,” according to CBS News.
Buck is set to be arraigned on Wednesday, September 18, and prosecutors are targeting a $4 million bond, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
“The full scope of his consistent malicious behavior is unknown,” prosecutors said. “It is only a matter of time before another one of these vulnerable young men dies of an overdose.”
Buck has previously donated to former President Barack Obama, former Senator and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, among many others. Following the second reported overdose in Buck’s homes, a number of the Democrats who received donations had returned them.
