John Bolton Resigns as National Security Adviser Upon Request

Another key member of the Donald Trump administration is out of a job. On Tuesday, September 10, President Donald Trump announced that John Bolton has been fired as National Security Adviser. Trump announced the news via Twitter.

“I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning,” Trump tweeted. “I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week.”

According to a report from Kaitlan Collins of CNN, Trump and Bolton had a heated argument on Monday night about the president’s plan to host Taliban leaders at Camp David. There had also been growing tension between Trump and Bolton in recent weeks over their differences.

Following Trump’s announcement, Bolton said that he offered to resign following their argument and that the president had agreed to have a conversation.

Utah Senator Mitt Romney was among the first to comment on Bolton’s departure from the White House that was an “extraordinary loss” for the United States because he was a voice of balance and reason.

“The loss of John Bolton as a senior leader in foreign policy is an extraordinary loss for our nation and for the White House,” Romney said, via CNN.com.

Bolton served as the 27th National Security Advisor of the United States from April 9, 2018, to September 10, 2019. Bolton previously served as a United States Ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush and was a foreign policy adviser for Mitt Romney during his 2012 presidential campaign. Bolton’s lengthy career also included being the 3rd Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs, 18th Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, United States Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division and a United States Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legislative Affairs
