Hannah Jones, an 18-year-old from Ohio, had the thought of returning home from college for the weekend to surprise her mother when things went terribly wrong. According to a since-deleted Facebook post, Jones ran into her home to surprise her mother who she startled.
When her mother was startled by the mother she heard in her home, Jones’ mother pulled out a gun and fired off a shot; accidentally injuring her daughter.
“It truly has been a crazy few days, but I am beyond thankful to still be here on this earth today,” Jones wrote. “I sure am lucky to still be here! It still baffles my mind to know that I could be dead, but thankfully I had an angel looking over me that night.”
Jones received eight screws and three plates in her arm after surgery on her arm which was breaking in three places.
Police are gathering facts and determining whether to charge the mother.
“The mother who has a valid CCW permit – even though she was in her own house, was startled by some noises she heard in the kitchen or hallway area. She stated that the bedroom door opened where she was at — and she had a gun readily available and she fired a round at someone coming through the door,” Girard Police Chief John Norman said in a statement to 21 News.
“We will collect all the facts, and we will present it to a Prosecutor, not to be malicious. But we have to present the facts like we would in any other case. At that point the Prosecutor will make a decision whether we will go ahead and charge or not charge in this case.”
Police have gathered the .38 special revolver and took it into evidence. According to reports, Jones is out of the hospital and resting.
