Before the 2019 college football season kicks into full swing, former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer is sharing his thoughts on the landscape of the nation and some of the top players in the sport. Of course, one of the topics Meyer was asked to discuss was the reigning national champion Clemson Tigers.
Meyer, who is now a FOX Sports college football analyst, directly mentioned Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence and had some very, very high praise.
As far as the three-time national championship-winning coach is concerned, Lawrence has the ability to enter the GOAT conversation.
“I think Dabo Swinney, as long as he can keep that team together … the quarterback is the best quarterback in college football, ever,” Meyer said, via 247Sports. “But what about the rest of the team? Are they going to stay focused and keep swinging like they did last year?”
Last season as a true freshman, Lawrence threw for 3,280 yards and 30 touchdowns while ultimately leading the Tigers to a 44-16 shellacking of the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
As for whether the Tigers can repeat, Meyer wouldn’t count them out, but did acknowledge the difficulty of repeating a championship in any sport.
“It’s very hard to repeat,” Meyer said. “The game changes, your team changes, your staff changes. Look at the NFL, Major League Baseball, the NBA. .. it’s very hard to repeat.”
Clemson is set to kickoff its 2019 campaign on Thursday, August 29. Kickoff at Clemson Memorial Stadium is set for 8:00 p.m. ET on the ACC Network. The Tigers enter the college football season as the No. 1 team in the preseason AP Top 25 poll. They will follow that up in Week 2 in a top 15 clash against the Texas A&M Aggies and then a top 25 matchup with Syracuse in Week 3 which will be the Tigers’ first road game of the season.
