Millionaire financier, registered sex offender and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein is dead at age 66, according to ABC News. Three separate law enforcement officials told the new outlet that Epstein committed suicide inside of his jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
Epstein reportedly hanged himself and was transported to New York Downtown Hospital in cardiac arrest.
News of Epstein’s suicide comes just weeks after he was found unresponsive in his jail cell with apparent self-inflicted marks on his neck. Following the incident, Epstein was placed on suicide watch. As to what led to Epstein’s initial incident, there were varying beliefs. Some believed that Epstein may have been attempting to hang himself, others believed he may have been attacked, and others believe he may have staged the attack in order to be transferred from the facility.
Further details were never released.
Epstein had been behind bars since his arrest on July 6. Authorities were waiting for Epstein to return to New Jersey from Paris and arrested him upon his arrival. The charges against Epstein claim that “dozens” of victims between 2002 to 2005 were are involved in the case which included Epstein allegedly paying minors for sex acts after grooming them. Some of the victims were as young as 14 years old.
Epstein was charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors. If he would have been convicted of the charges, Epstein would have faced up to 45 years in prison.
The financier was a registered sex offender in Florida.
