Halle Bailey is a Grammy-nominated artist as one half of the music duo Chloe x Halle with her sister. The two earned nods for “Best New Artist” and “Best Urban Contemporary Album.” Now, she is getting a big break in Hollywood thanks to a recent announcement by Disney.
Halle will be joining the Disney world as the star of the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid where she will play the role of Ariel.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall said in a statement, via the Hollywood Reporter.
The Little Mermaid is currently filling up its cast with Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina among the stars who are in talks to join the project.
Production is expected to begin in early 2020.
The 19-year-old and her sister began their rise to stardom on YouTube and signed with Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment. The duo has opened for Beyonce in the past and their YouTube channel now has over 1 million subscribers. Halle was born on March 27, 2000, in Atlanta, Georgia, before relocating to Los Angeles. She currently stars in the Freeform show “Grown-ish.”
