Ella Dorsey, a meteorologist for CBS 46 in Georgia, says she has received death threats from angry golf fans after she interrupted the station’s Masters coverage to issue a tornado warning.
According to reports, CBS 46 interrupted the network’s coverage of the Masters Tournament on Sunday, April 14, as Tiger Woods was closing on his first major tournament win in 11 years.
While CBS 46 provided split-screen coverage of both the Masters Tournament and Dorsey’s Tornado warning, golf fans became upset because they were unable to hear the commentary from Phil Nantz and the rest of the CBS commentary crew.
The vicious response on social media prompted Dorsey to make a statement of her own on Twitter, reminding the angry audience that “lives are more important than 5 minutes of golf.”
“To everyone sending me death threats right now: you wouldn’t be saying a damn thing if a tornado was ravaging your home this afternoon. Lives are more important than 5 minutes of golf. I will continue to repeat that if and when we cut into programming to keep people safe,” Dorsey wrote on Twitter on Sunday, April 14 at about 1:30 p.m. local time.
A tornado did eventually touch down in the area, with the death toll from this weekend’s storms standing at eight people — including three children — at the time of this writing.
Speaking to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, CBS 46 news director Steve Dorsey told the paper that he thought the reaction from certain golf fans was “insane”
“The venom around this was insane, even by social media standards,” Dorsey told an Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter.
