Popular Alternative Rock Singer Shawn Smith Dies At Age 53

Shawn Smith, an alternative rock singer for bands like Brad, Satchel, and Pigeonhead, has passed away at age 55. Smith died at his home in Seattle on Friday, April 5, according to reports. Smith was 53 years old.

“Shawn Smith has passed away,” his close friend Donal Logue confirmed on Twitter. “He was a friend and a beautiful artist. I will always be thankful to Greg Dulli for introducing us all those beautiful years ago when everybody jammed at Barrett Jones’ warehouse on Queen Anne.”

Other musicians to confirm Smith’s death include musicians Mike Inez of Alice in Chains‘ and Ken Stringfellow.

Shawn Smith Cause of Death: Diabetes-related complications

Consequence of Sound was one of the first to report the news of Smith’s passing. The publication confirmed that Smith passed away on Friday, April 5 due to complications from diabetes.

“Absolutely heartbroken about Shawn Smith right now,” George Garner, deputy editor of Music Week wrote on Twitter. “We have just lost one of the greatest singers and songwriters. [He was a] remarkable talent and a lovely, lovely man. May you rest in peace.”

Smith was reported to have been working on a new album with the band Brad at the time of his passing. He founded Brad in 1992 with Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, drummer Regan Hagar, and bassist Jeremy Toback. He also performed for the band Satchel and released a solo album under the name Pigeonhead.
