Virginia Basketball Player Kyle Guy Says His Wedding Registry Was Against NCAA Rules

The absurdity of NCAA rules may have reached new levels. According to Virginia basketball standout Kyle Guy, he and his fiancée Alexa Jenkins were told that they should take down their wedding registry in order to avoid potentially violating NCAA rules that prevent student-athletes from receiving gifts.

“That was crazy to me that that was illegal because that’s what a registry is for,” Guy said, via USA TODAY. “The NCAA said it was illegal so I’m not gonna argue with it right now. I’m gonna try to win a national championship right now. Then we’ll open that book.”

Guy revealed the bizarre news while speaking to the media ahead of Virginia’s Final Four appearance against the Auburn Tigers.

But while it wouldn’t be surprising if the NCAA actually did have a rule this ridiculous, NCAA president Mark Emmert is denying that anyone told the junior guard that he had to take his wedding registry down.

“Nobody in the NCAA said anything of the sort,” Emmert said. “We don’t know what the source of that information was. …It’s certainly not the case that it’s a violation of NCAA rules.”

Maybe now Guy and Jenkins — who have been dating since grade school and engaged since February 2018 — can get some useless kitchen appliances sent their way ahead of the big day. We all know those are the kind of impermissible benefits that college student-athletes love to receive.

The Cavaliers, which are the lone remaining No. 1 seed in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, and the No. 5 seed Auburn Tigers are set to tip-off at 6:09 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 6. The game — called by Jim Nantz, Grant Hill, Bill Raftery, and Tracy Wolfson — will air on CBS.
