Alberto Cortez, a famed singer from Argentina, has died at age 79, according to a report from Spanish newspaper El Pais. Cortez was previously admitted to Hospital Puerta del Sur one week prior to his passing, which came on Thursday, April 4.
Cortez had a scheduled performance on April 5 at the National Theater of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
“We are very sorry for his departure and this took us by surprise,” singer Daniel Frega said, via ElNuevoDia.com. “The world loses a poet of the song and a great writer.”
Prior to his passing, Cortez was forced out of a concert in Puerto Rico. The show went on, however, with the other acts — Dagmar, Glenn Monroig, Rafael José and Alberto Carrión — taking the stage.
“Due to the sudden hospitalization of Alberto Cortez, we went ahead with the scheduled show, doing justice to those who wanted to see Alberto Carrión and presenting a new and emotional tribute to the work of Alberto Cortez,” the show’s producer told the publication.

Alberto Cortez, born José Alberto García Gallo on March 11, 1940, in Rancul, Argentina, it was at age 12 hat Cortez began composing songs. He had studied music at the Chopin of San Farael conservatory after entering Manuel Ignacio Molina de San Rafael Junior High School. He had also studied Social Sciences and Law School before dedicating himself to music and dropping out of school.
On Thursday, April 4, it was announced that the legendary singer had passed away due to a gastric hemorrhage — which is bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the rectum. When there is significant blood loss over a short time, symptoms may include vomiting red blood, vomiting black blood, bloody stool, or black stool, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Cortez had previously suffered a stroke while performing in Mar del Plata in 1996, and had also undergone heart surgery.
