Former New York Knicks and current Dallas Mavericks All-Star power forward/center Kristaps Porzingis is under investigation by the New York Police Department for an alleged 2018 rape.
According to a report from the New York Post, Porzingis allegedly raped an unidentified woman at his Manhattan apartment “hours” after injuring his knee during a game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.
The alleged victim, who reportedly lives in the same building as Porzingis and remains unidentified at this time, claims that the Latvian power forward raped her at the Sky building in Manhattan around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.
Speaking to law enforcement officials at the New York Police Department 10th Precinct stationhouse, the woman — who is reportedly in her mid-20s and is a “believable” accuser” — said that she went to Porzinigs’ apartment after he invited her over.
Once she arrived, the woman claims the then 22-year-old All-Star allegedly held her down and raped her.
Porzingis is no longer a member of the New York Knicks, as he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, February 1, 2019.
As for why she waited over 12 months to report the alleged rape, the woman told police that Porzingis allegedly promised to give her $68,000 to pay for her brother’s college tuition, but did not follow through.
At this time, neither Kristaps Porzingis nor the Dallas Mavericks have yet to release an official statement in response to the allegations.
Porzingis, born in Latvia on August 2, 1995, and drafted into the NBA in 2015, is considered one of the sport’s most exciting talents.
