Nathaniel David Rowland has been arrested and charged in the kidnapping and murder of 21-year-old University of South Carolina student Samantha Josephson. Josephson was reported missing early Friday, March 29.

On the morning of Saturday, March 30, the university confirmed that Josephson had been found dead.

The 21-year-old student’s body was found near a dirt road in a hard-to-access area, according to authorities. Shortly after, Rowland was stopped in a Chevy Impala and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers chased Rowland and eventually made the arrest and handed down charges.

Rowland is 24 years old.

At the time of his arrest, The Post and Courier’s Andy Shain says there was another woman in the vehicle with Rowland. She is reportedly cooperating with authorities. An inspection of his vehicle showed that child locks were on in the back of his vehicle, making an escape nearly impossible.

What Happened?

Samantha was last seen between 1:30-2:00 a.m. local time at The Bird Dog bar. After the 21-year-old student from the University of South Carolina did not return home to her apartment, her friends contacted authorities.

Friends believe that Josephson entered a vehicle she believed to be her Uber before vanishing.

Josephson was a senior at the University of South Carolina and was majoring in political science. She was set to graduate in May and had hopes of attending law school at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
