San Fransisco natives have created a GoFudMe campaign called “Safe Embarcadero for All” in an effort to keep a homeless shelter out of their neighborhood, which is lies in the congressional district of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The GoFundMe, which was created earlier in March, has raised over $63,000 of it’s $100,000 goal at the time of this writing.

Launched on March 20, “Safe Embarcadero for All” was created following San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s proposal for a “200-bed homeless Navigation Center” in the Embarcadero neighborhood, one of the most desirable areas of the city of San Fransisco.

“The planned location for Mayor Breed’s #megashelter is home to thousands of families, visited by millions of tourists and at the center of some of San Francisco’s most iconic events – including the San Francisco Marathon, San Francisco Giants stadium and on one of the busiest bicyclist paths in the city,” the campaign argues.

An opposition GoFundMe that was created in response and in support of the proposed homeless shelter has raised over $39,000 at the time of this writing. GoFundMe donated $5000 to this campaign themselves.

Speaking to the San Fransisco Chronicle, Mayor London Breed called the GoFundMe efforts “incredibly frustrating and disappointing.”

“People want us to address the challenges on our streets and help our unsheltered residents into housing, and I am committed to doing the hard work to make that happen,” Breed said to the San Fransisco Chronicle.

“But it’s incredibly frustrating and disappointing that as soon as we put forward a solution to build a new shelter, people begin to threaten legal action,” she continued.

The Embarcadero is a neighborhood on the eastern waterfront of the San Fransisco Bay.
