Tanya Nguyen, a first-grade teacher in southern California, was brutally attacked outside of her home by a group of men who are allegedly part of a street gang. The 33-year-old, who is pregnant with her first child, was stabbed ten times in the attack.
It is a horrifying situation, but the good news is that Nguyen is recovering after suffering a punctured lung and the unborn child has maintained a heartbeat and is expected to be okay.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, the suspected assailants Christian Reyes, Andrew Bran, and Jesus Morales carried out the attack while two other men waited in a nearby getaway vehicle.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said that all five suspects in the attack have been charged with premeditated attempted murder, carjacking, second-degree robbery and hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage. According to KTLA-TV, the suspects are facing life in prison if convicted.
Nguyen has since uploaded a video thanking everyone for their support during her recovery.
“Hi, everybody. Thank you so much for all of your love and support,” she said. “I’m completely overwhelmed by it and very grateful for all of your support and being there for me through this time. And, I’m going to get through this. I promise. Thank you.”
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help her family with medical costs. At the time of this writing, the GoFundMe account has raised more than $44,000 of a $100,000 goal.
“I got discharged yesterday, recuperating at and will have home nurse care visit me each day for a little while. Next Friday stitches on face and body will be removed. arm and hand will be examined. Not sure if they’ll keep it open or rebandage it,” a message from Nguyen on the fundraiser page read. “Not sure when therapy begins either. I think it will begin once they are sure my veins there have positively reconnected and skin has bonded. Then hopefully take care of the missing teeth.
“It’s frustrating not being independent with daily tasks. That brings me down the most, being an inconvenience. But other than that I’m strong and have faith. And most importantly, the baby is ok. I’m so overwhelmed by the support and love. I will fight and overcome this.”
We wish Tanya a full and speedy recovery after this traumatic incident.
