If you are a fan of cheese, you better start listening to more hip hop, too. Why? Because it will help your taste buds enjoy everyone’s favorite dairy product even more, according to science. That’s right, folks. A Tribe Called Queso will taste a lot better than Mozarterella, at least that is what the experts are saying after an all too important scientific study.
Students of the University of Arts Bern in Switzerland joined forces with veterinarian Beat Wampfler and conducted an eight-month experiment where they exposed cheese to different genres of music. The project, titled “Cheese in Surround Sound,” set out to determine whether the taste of cheese could alter based on the type of music it was exposed to.
Science was in hip hop’s corner.
Nine 22-pound wheels of Emmental cheese were placed in wooden crates with frequencies from different music being pumped into them 24 hours a day, according to Reuters.
From the report:
The cheese was exposed 24 hours a day to A Tribe Called Quest’s hip hop track “We Got it From Here”, Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’ opera or Led Zeppelin’s rock classic “Stairway to Heaven”. One wheel was played the throbbing techno of Vril’s “UV” and another Yello’s dark ambient piece “Monolith”.
“The hip hop sample topped the list of all cheese exposed to music in terms of fruitiness…(it) was the strongest of these in terms of smell and taste,” researchers said. “The most obvious differences were observed in strength of flavor, smell and taste.”
So that settles it: Hip hop is cheese’s favorite music.

A cheesemaker in Emmental has been ageing his cheese with music, a different genre for each wheel. The idea behind this crazy experiment is to find out if sound waves can influence the cheese’s taste like humidity and temperature do.
