Luiz Henrique de Castro has been identified as the 25-year-old man who helped carry out the Professor Raul Brasil school shooting that resulted in the deaths of eight people, including five children.
According to reports, de Castro, 25, and Guilherme Taucci Monteiro, 17, killed five students, two school employees, and a car rental owner in a killing spree on Wednesday, March 13, in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
After killing the owner of a nearby car rental, de Castro and Monteiro traveled to the Professor Raul Brasil school in Suzano, Brazil, where they killed five teenage students and two employees. In addition to the deceased, at least 9 other students were injured in the attack.
Both de Castro and Monteiro, who took their own lives after the shooting, were former students of the Professor Raul Brasil school, which has over 1,000 students in attendance.
Police say that both assailants were wearing masks during the attack and were armed with an automatically reloading handgun, a hatchet, crossbow, and fake explosives.
At this time, police officials in Brazil are still investigating possible motives.
São Paulo State governor João Doria told reporters that the scene of the shooting is “the saddest scene I’ve witnessed in my whole life.”
Additionally, President Jair Bolsonaro called the tragic shooting “cowardice without comparison” in a statement on Twitter.
The Professor Raul Brasil shooting in Sao Paolo is reminiscent of similar mass school shootings that have been frequent in the United States over recent years. During the year 2018, 113 people were killed or injured in school shootings in the United States, according to BBC.
