President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. The speech will be carried on all major cable and broadcasting networks, continuing the tradition of televised State of the Union addresses dating back to 1966. A Spanish broadcast will be available on Telemundo and Univision.
The theme for the speech was “choosing greatness,” with the hope of delivering a bipartisan “policy agenda both parties can rally behind.”
The speech was initially scheduled for January 2019, but Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi postponed the address due to the partial government shutdown. Pelosi used the excuse of “security concerns” to postpone the State of the Union because the U.S. Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security were both impacted.
“I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until the government has opened,” she wrote in a letter to the president.
It marks the second time that the State of the Union has been postponed but it is the first time that the event was delayed due to a standoff with Congress. The previous State of the Union delay came in 1986 when the Challenger space shuttle exploded on the same day that Ronald Reagan was set to address the nation.
