Kamala Harris, the Democratic Senator from California, announced on Monday, January 21, 2019 that she was set to run for president in the 2020 election, giving the Democrats another figure to put in the mix as a potential party favorite to go up against incumbent Donald Trump.

“Justice. Decency. Equality. Freedom. Democracy. These aren’t just words. They’re the values we as Americans cherish. And they’re all on the line now,” Harris said in a video announcing her candidacy.

“The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values. That’s why I’m running for president of the United States. “I’m running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together.”

Harris, who became a star on the national stage thanks to her questioning of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, becomes the first African-American woman to announce a run for the White House in 2020.

Kamala Harris Early Life

Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California on October 20, 1964, to a Jamaican father and Tamil Indian mother. Her father is an economics professor at Stanford University and her mother, who immigrated to the United States from Chennai, was a breast cancer scientist.

Harris graduated from Westmount High School in Quebec after her mother relocated, and went on to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she majored in political science and economics. Harris later returned to California to attend the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1989 to obtain her Juris Doctor (J.D.).


Kamala Harris Career

From 1990 to 1998, Harris served as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California where she oversaw cases that included robbery, murder, and child rape. She also worked at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. In 2003, Harris became the first South-Asian and black woman to become the San Francisco District Attorney.

Harris went on to become the California Attorney General, winning the election on January 3, 2011, and became the first Jamaican American woman and first Indian American attorney general in the state.

Harris went on to win 62 percent of the 2016 United States Senate election in California where she currently serves.

On Monday, January 21, 2019, Harris announced her intentions to run for president.
