Emma Coronel is the wife of notorious Mexican cartel drug lord El Chapo.
El Chapo, born Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera on April 4, 1957, is the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. The Sinaloa Cartel is an international drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime syndicate that is based in the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico.
The Sinaloa Cartel, which was first formed during the mid-1980s, has operations in the Mexican states of Baja California, Durango, Sonora, and Chihuahua.
El Chapo has infamously escaped from prison twice. His first prison escape came in 2001, when he bribed prison guards at a federal maximum-security prison. Following his 2001 prison escape, El Chapo was then arrested again on February 22, 2014, after he was found inside a condominium in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. He then escaped from jail a second time in July 2015 through a tunnel.
He was recaptured by Mexican marines and Federal Police on January 8, 2016, and was extradited to the United States a little over one year later to be brought up on criminal charges for his involvement with the Sinaloa Cartel.
At this time, it is believed that the Sinaloa Cartel is now run by Ismael Zambada Garcia (otherwise known as El Mayo) and El Chapo’s two sons: Alfredo Guzman Salazar and Ivan Archivaldo Salazar.
El Chapo is banned from having any direct contact or communication with his wife Emma Coronel while he stands trial in New York City for his litany of crimes.
