23-year-old Justin Meek has been identified by his family and former university as one of the victims of the tragic Borderline Bar & Grill shooting.

In a statement released by California Lutheran University President Chris Kimball, the university confirmed the recent graduated died “heroically” and “saved lives in the incident.” His family confirmed Justin’s tragic untimely death.

“Cal Lutheran wraps its arms around the Meek family and other families, and around every member of this community of caring,” the university’s statement partially read.

Meek was shot and killed by 28-year-old Ian David Long, a United States Marine Corps veteran who was living with his mother.

Meek was one of 12 victims in the shootings who lost their lives.


What Happened?

Around 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 28-year-old Ian David Long entered the Borderline Bar & Grill, deployed a smoke bomb and opened fired with a legally purchased .45 caliber handgun, ultimately killing 13 people, including himself. Long reportedly shot a security guard before firing on patrons.

In addition to the fatalities, there were reportedly also over 25 injuries. Reports indicate there were over 100 people in the bar at the time of the shooting. Police have since estimated that “over 200 people” were inside the bar at the time of the shooting.

Police believe the Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun used in the shooting was legally purchased by Long in 2016.

Sergeant Ron Helus, one of the first officers on the scene who confronted the shooter, was also killed.
