28-year-old Ian David Long, the man responsible for the mass shooting at Borderline Bar & Grill that left 13 people dead, reportedly lived at home with his mother and drove her vehicle to the shooting.
According to authorities, Long entered the Borderline Bar & Grill around 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, and killed a security guard before deploying smoke bombs and opened firing with a legally purchased .45 caliber handgun on the patrons.
Long ultimately killed 13 people — including himself — and injured over 25 people. The deceased include Sergeant Ron Helus, who was one of the first officers to respond to the scene. Helus reportedly attempted to confront Long and was shot multiple times, later dying at the hospital.
At this time, the identity of Long’s mother is unknown, and it is not known whether he had other loved ones in his life.
President Donald Trump released the following statement on Twitter following the deadly mass shooting:
“I have been fully briefed on the terrible shooting in California. Law Enforcement and First Responders, together with the FBI, are on scene. 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. Likewise, the shooter is dead, along with the first police officer to enter the bar….
….Great bravery shown by police. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times. That Sheriff’s Sergeant died in the hospital. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. Thank you to Law Enforcement.”
Information from the Gun Violence Archive indicates that the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting is the 307th mass shooting in 2018.
