Floyd Mayweather could be returning to the ring, at least that’s what he says. After receiving a callout from UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Mayweather said that he was willing to take the bout. Now, the undefeated boxing star says that the fight will be happening.
Mayweather revealed his plans to face Khabib in an interview with TMZ Sports, where he said that the fight could net him a 9-figure payday. He is estimated to have made $275 million for his most recent outing against Conor McGregor, and he now claims that a fight with Nurmagomedov could net him an even larger sum of money.
“Oh, we’re fighting,” Mayweather (50-0 boxing) told TMZ Sports. “I’m my own boss. I can’t say what’s going on on Khabib’s end, but on my end, we can make it happen.
“… When I face Khabib, I’m getting a nine-figure payday. It’s more than the McGregor fight – probably $100 million more, guaranteed. It could be somewhere between $110 (million) and $200 million (more) guaranteed.”
In his most recent fight, Nurmagomedov choked out Conor McGregor to retain his 155-pound title at UFC 229 in Las Vegas on Oct. 6, 2018. After the fight, a brawl broke out and spilled into the crowd. As a result, Nurmagomedov is currently awaiting punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
With his win, Khabib advanced to 27-0 in his professional career. His 27 consecutive wins gives him the longest winning streak in all of mixed martial arts. Khabib first won the vacant lightweight championship on April 7, 2018 at UFC 223 when he scored a dominant decision win over Al Iaquinta in Brooklyn, New York. He became the first Russian to win a UFC title. The submission victory over McGregor was his first title defense.
