A naked man who shut down traffic on I-95 had died after being shot twice by a Richmond Police officer.

According to Richmond Police, the incident started as a hit-and-run near the intersection of Belvidere and Franklin Streets. An officer, who witnessed the incident & pursued the vehicle, said the unidentified man behind the wheel was naked. Authorities say that the suspect attempted to get on I-95 at the Chamberlayne Avenue entrance ramp before hitting two other vehicles, sending his car crashing into nearby trees.

Once his car crashed, police say the suspect “ran across traffic on I-95 North and became aggressive with an officer” who attempted to arrest him. The officer attempted to use their taser to control the man, however, was required to use deadly force after he was unable to control the man.

Crime Insider sources say the officer attempted to subdue the suspect with a Taser. When that did not work, those sources say that officer pulled out his service weapon and shot the suspect as he continued to get aggressive. The man was shot twice and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting officer is on administrative leave pending the investigation, per protocol. Crime Insider sources say the shooting officer is a veteran Richmond Police Officer. The shooting investigation is being handled by the Richmond Police Force Investigative Team.

All lanes were closed near Chamberlayne Avenue at mile marker 76 as Virginia State Police assisted Richmond Police in the search for the naked man.

The suspect, who was shot twice in the abdomen, died at the hospital. The officer involved in the shooting, who also remains unidentified, has been questioned and placed on leave.
