William was born at Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London. The eldest child of Charles, Princess of Wales, heir apparent to Queen Elizabeth II, and Diana, Princess of Wales, he is in the direct line of succession to the British royal throne. Buckingham Palace, where he would later be baptized, later announced his official name as William Arthur Philip Louis a week after his birth. His mother Diana wanted both William and Harry to be well-rounded, taking them to places ranging from Walt Disney World, McDonald’s, AIDS clinics and homeless shelters. As early as 1983, William also began to accompany his parents on official visits at a young age. William’s life was shaken at the age of 15 when his mother, Diana, who was divorced from his father at the time, died in a car accident in 1997.

Breaking the tradition of sending royal children to Gordonstoun School, William was accepted to Eton College after passing the entrance exam. Upon finishing his studies, he took a gap year in which he took part in British Army training exercises and volunteered as part of the Raleigh International program. By 2001, he enrolled at the University of St. Andrews; originally studying art history, he later switched to Geography, ultimately earning a Scottish Master of Arts degree with upper second class honors.

Deciding on a military career, William attended the Regular Commissions Board at Westbury in Wiltshire in 2005; the following year, he enrolled at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Towards the end of the year, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, with him later training in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. While it initially appeared that William would not take on an active role in the military due to his future role as King, William was transferred to the Royal Air Force service in early 2009 and was promoted to Flight Lieutenant.

In 2010, Clarence House announced that Prince William announced that he would marry Catherine “Kate” Middleton, who was his girlfriend since 2003. The wedding took place in April 2011; a few hours before the ceremony, he was granted the titles of Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus. After William’s active service for the Royal Air Force service ended in late 2013, it was announced he would take on a full-time role as an air ambulance pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance, although he would later leave the position in 2017 in order to serve a more active role in his royal duties with his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.
