Garrett Dolan, an All-American linebacker for Houston Baptist, has tragically passed away at the age of 23. Dolan passed away on Sunday, and university officials have confirmed the matter. Dolan led all Houston Baptist defenders with 140 tackles as a senior. He was set to graduate on Saturday.
Houston Baptist athletic director Steve Moniaci issued a statement on Dolan’s passing.
“The entire HBU community is grieving,” Moniaci said. “We know the Bible tells us that for each of us there is a time, we are saddened that his time came so young. We pray for Garrett, his family and friends; and for his teammates and classmates as we all work to understand this loss.”
A statement was also released by president Robert B. Sloan:
“All of us at HBU mourn the death of Garrett Dolan. He was an outstanding student and athlete. We ask for prayers for the students, staff, and faculty who knew him best and especially for his family.”

The current cause of death for Dolan has not been disclosed at this time. He was found dead in the courtyard of a Midtown apartment complex. Dolan’s teammates were informed of his passing during a team meeting on Monday morning.

Dolan finished his career as a two-time All-American and a four-time All-Southland Conference selection. He was the first All-American selection in the history of the Houston Baptist football program and a finalist for FCS Defensive Player of the Year.
The 23-year-old linebacker went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft but had worked out with the Houston Texans in hopes of jumpstarting his NFL career. Just over a week ago, Dolan was watching the first round of the draft at his apartment with teammate Cortez Iwuagwu.
“He’s been working for this moment,” Iwuagwu said, via the Houston Chronicle. “He’s put in a crazy amount of work to get to this moment, and to see it taken away is heartbreaking.”
