Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born as Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. on April 16, 1947, in New York City, New York. Abdul-Jabbar starred for the UCLA Bruins and was part of an 88-2 three-year run. Still known as Alcindor during his Bruins career, the College Basketball Hall of Famer was a two-time Player of the Year, three-time First Team All-American, three-time national champion. three-time Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Tournament, and the first-ever Naismith College Player of the Year.
Alcindor converted to Islam in the summer of 1968, later adopting his Arabic name Kareem Abdul-Jabbar publicly in 1971. Also in 1968, Abdul-Jabbar boycotted the 1968 Summer Olympics to protest unequal treatment of African-Americans in the United States.
